What isAnnabel Lee?

Annabel Lee"Annabel Lee" is a beautiful, but painfully sad poem. It talks about a young love between man and a beautiful maid named Annabel Lee. The angels envied the two lovers. The angels send a chilling wind that killed beautiful Annabel Lee.

Let us listen toAnnabel Lee

Annabel Lee

Annabel LeeIt was many and many a year ago,In a kingdom by the sea,That a maiden there lived whom you may knowBy the name of ANNABEL LEE;And this maiden she lived with no other thoughtThan to love and be loved by me.

Annabel LeeShe was a child and I was a child,In this kingdom by the sea;But we loved with a love that was more than love-I and my Annabel Lee;With a love that the winged seraphs of heavenCoveted her and me.

Annabel LeeAnd this was the reason that, long ago,In this kingdom by the sea,A wind blew out of a cloud by night,Chilling my Annabel Lee;So that her highborn kinsman cameAnd bore her away from me,To shut her up in a sepulcherIn this kingdom by the sea.

Annabel LeeThe angels, not half so happy in Heaven,Went envying her and me-Yes! that was the reason as all men know,In this kingdom by the seaThat the wind came out of the cloud,Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

Annabel LeeBut our love it was stronger by far than the loveOf those who were older than we,Of many far wiser than we,And neither the angels in Heaven above,Nor the demons down under the sea,Can ever dissever my soul from the soulOf the beautiful Annabel Lee.

Annabel LeeFor the moon never beams without bringing me dreamsOf the beautiful Annabel Lee;And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyesOf the beautiful Annabel Lee;And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the sideOf my darling, my darling, my life, and my bride,In the sepulcher there by the sea,In her tomb by the sounding sea.

The messages inAnnabel Lee

Annabel Lees messageThe poem's narrator describes his love for Annabel Lee, which began many years ago in a so-called "kingdom by the sea". Though they were young, their love for one another burned with such intensity that angels became envious. It is for that reason that the narrator believes the seraphim caused her death.

Annabel Lees messageEven so, their love is strong enough that it extends beyond the grave and the narrator believes their two souls are still entwined. Every night, he dreams of Annabel Lee and sees the brightness of her eyes in the stars. He admits that every night he lies down by her side in her tomb by the sea.

The connection of Annabel Lee to Edgar Allan Poe

Annabel Lees connection to Edgar PoePoe immortalizes here in Annabel Lee his first love that he could not translate into earthly reality. Once again, no poet can overcome the personal impressions in poetry. Here in this poem -the unrequited love revives, and the poet treasures it as unearthly bliss.

Annabel Lees connection to Edgar PoeFor those that don't know about Poe, his wife was killed early on by tuberculosis, causing Poe to go into a mournful and depressing state that affected his pieces. Annabel Lee was a prime example of this because it describe his love for his wife and how he felt as she was taken away from him. Poe expresses not only this poem but most of his works through this voice and he is known highly for it. I feel that his voice is what makes him Edgar Allan Poe.
