Anna Westbury is a rare bird. She determinedly entered the world a full 2.5 months ahead of schedule, and has been going like the Energizer bunny ever since.

As a child, her many doodles, noodle necklaces, and construction paper compositions were admired by all on the Galleria de Frigidaire. She often harnessed this creative power throughout her school years by creating fanciful science project display boards, team spirit posters, and history dioramas. Had she marketed her services more effectively, her classmates could’ve financed her college career. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Once she got to college, she invested in a time machine so that she could fully engage in all of the activities and internships that peaked her interests. After four years of heavy use, both she and her time machine are still going strong as you will see when you turn the page…

hookah spots[ [Disorderly Conduct617 Harden Street

Al-Amir, located on Main Street between Firehouse and Moe’s, offers a unique, quality dining experience with several traditional Mediterranean dishes that can-not be found anywhere else in Columbia. While the variety of hookah fl avors isn’t the greatest, the offered options make sure that even the most inexperienced smoker can have a great time. City law prohibits customers from smoking inside of Al-Amir, but the staff does a good job of making sure its clients get customer service. For those looking to satisfy a hookah craving along with some traditional, delicious food, Al-Amir is by far the best venue in Columbia. Overall, this dining

experience provides quick service and an opportunity to learn about hookah.

Disorderly Conduct is located on Harden Street in Five Points across from Red Hot Tomatoes. This hookah supply venue differs from the other hookah spots in Columbia in that it is actually a store that sells hookah paraphernalia and other goods. Disorderly allows its customers to smoke outside at one of its tables during regular business hours and offers great preparation and expertise. There is a limited selection of fl avors to smoke at the store, but Disorderly has one of the best selections of fl avors for sale that you can fi nd in this city. You can pick up some awesome fl avors if you’ve invested in your own hookah. Prices are pretty cheap at Disorderly compared to the other hoo-kah options, but you can save even more money if you bring friends along to share the

experience (and cost) with you.

Al-Amir629 Main Street

803 is a members-only hookah and oxygen bar located across from the Horseshoe and next to Beezer’s. It is the most conve-nient hookah bar for those living on campus, yet probably the least known to students. 803 offers a great selection of hookah fl avors and regular specials at its two full-size bars (one upstairs and one down). This generally laid-back venue always has mu-sic playing, whether it be a live band, DJ or the bartender’s iPod. 803 has a climate geared toward the college student who wants to hang out with friends, have a few drinks and smoke hookah. The bar’s seating lines the walls, inviting clients to pro-ceed to any section of the two-story establishment as soon as they enter. With fl at rate pricing per bowl, prices at 803 can easily be kept in check by splitting a bill amongst your group.

Store Wars, Garnet & Black Magazine / Fall 2010I was very attracted to the clean, yet ornamental lines of the hookah. I wanted to echo those details in my design.

Black History Month Spread, Garnet & Black MagazineFall 2011The magazine was formerly a yearbook, I went through the old issues to get the art and photos for this historical spread. I really wanted to draw attention to how much a part of the campus these former students were. I also wanted to preserve the vintage nature of the yearbooks.

Page 9: Anna Westbury Portfolio Book

This spread encouraged students to be resourceful during our current economic downturn. I drew colors from the photo and used fonts that conveyed a sense of excitement and fun.

T homas Cooper LibraryFall 2011

The Cooper Crawl got students into the library and exploring their many resources. Students who collected all the stamps from each of the participating departments got free pizza. I designed a poster, flyer, and printed stamp cards for the event.

Spotlight and Soapbox, Garnet & Black MagazineFall 2011

For this Spotlight and Soapbox page, I not only did the design work, but took the photos as well. I wanted to provide a fair amount of interaction between the type and photos, so I took the photos with that in mind.

Pinkerton Wedding SuiteSummer 2010

My friend Jessica Pinkerton asked me to design the invitations and response cards for her wedding. She wanted a vintage color theme and friendly illustrations. I chose a muted fabric for the pattern and illustrated the bird with a heart wing.

Calendar 2011Every year I make a calendar. This year’s features my favorite shots from my study abroad in Italy. I think it is important for designers to make things that they would use on a daily basis so that they can really learn to “live” with their designs.

Photography

Kemp RidleySpring 2010

Kemp Ridley is a local band in Columbia, S.C. They were featured in the Garnet and Black and I was the photographer assigned to their shoot. I wanted to take their photo outside of their typical urban residences, and show more of their independent-folk style. The bright blue sky played such a great contrast to the rusty wooden barn, and I found the textures mesmerizing.

Below is the spread I designed for the magazine.

Mad TeaSpring 2010

I art directed, styled, and shot this for a video project. I used items from around my house including a scarf and my bedspread for the tablecloth. The couple really got in to their roles as the Mad Hatter and Alice, and the pictures really focus on showing their character.

Ivy ShoesSpring 2009

For this shot, I was challenged to take an editorial fashion shot of a pair of shoes. I chose my yellow t-straps because their color is so vibrant. I placed them in ivy climbing a tree to resemble a pair of exotic flowers.

CarolineFall 2010

This window light portrait was taken in the historic Rutledge Chapel of USC’s campus. She was a chemical engineering major and often worked harder than she played, but I wanted to emphasize her playfulness and fun-loving nature.

Nature SceneFall 2010

This collection of photos were taken throughout my semester in a class with South Carolina’s most famous naturalist: Rudy Mancke. Every Wednesday we would hike throughout the state to observe the wildlife and environments around us. I especially enjoyed the natural aspects of this course, and loved the beauty I found in the wild.

Page 25: Anna Westbury Portfolio Book

Half & HalfSpring 2011

In Spring of 2011, I interned with the Half and Half, a design and printing firm in Columbia. We screen printed posters, letter pressed wedding invites, and had a great time. I had the opportunity to take photos for their website, so I took a variety of shots throughout the shop, taking notice of small details that aren’t easily seen at first glance.

Film PhotographyFall 2011

These images were taken with a Canon AE-1 for a film processes class. I really enjoyed learning how to shoot and develop film, and I think it has greatly improved my sense for composition in photography.

Men Series: KurtyssFall 2011

In this series, I am seeking to capture my fellow friends and their thoughts about life. I hope to convey their demeanor, style, and visual aesthetic in one shot. Kurtyss emanates a Peter Pan-like persona. He is a sprite, and I feel as though I captured his cheeky demeanor in his eyes.

Identity

T he Ground FloorSpring 2011

The Ground Floor is an online zine filled with a little bit of everything. They approached me for a logo and identity package that they could use on their website and magazine cover, so I came up with a collection of modern logos that played with creative uses of type and form. The second logo was chosen by the masthead.

The Midlands Housing Trust Fund is a new initiative of United Way of the Midlands that hopes to make housing more affordable for first time buyers and victims of the housing crisis. The third logo was chosen by the creative team at United Way.

MRCMIDLANDS READING CONSORTIUM

The Midlands Reading Consortium, a division of United Way of the Midlands, asked me to design a new logo. I used the colors from the United Way logo, and created a shelf of books to spruce up their brand.

This logo was part of a class assignment to rebrand the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. I wanted to keep it clean and modern to appeal to a high school audience. I attended SIPA in high school and have continued to help market them throughout college.

Politics on FilmFall 2011

This branding was part of a USC Libraries initiative to get the public involved in the Libraries annual film festival and forum. The logo remained on each flyer and the film information was substituted. I kept it clean so that the information would not interfere with the themes of the movies.

Robert B. Ariail Collection of Historical AstronomySummer 2011For this website, I came up with the concept of the rotating wheel to display the telescopes. I created a working model in Illustrator and then sent that model to the coders of the website. The images to the left display my workflow and the final design was based heavily on my model. This website is now used by the S.C. State Museum and the University of South Carolina to display the gifts of Mr. Ariail.

Historical Background

“In the late 1820s, South Carolina was not doing well economically. Charleston was losing itseconomic prominence because it was difcult for Up Country planters to get their products toCharleston for shipment to European or northern markets. Until the 1830s, business haddepended on the state to provide good transportation routes. But with Charleston desperate for help, a new plan was devised. A private company, the South Carolina Canal and RailroadCompany, was organized to build a railroad across the state. The line was to extend fromCharleston to Hamburg, which was near Augusta, Georgia. The success of the South CarolinaRailway sparked interest in the building of other railroads.”

Horne, Paul A. Jr. South Carolina: The History of an American State, 2nd Ed. Georgia: Clairmont Press, 2006.
