The piano is a very old instrument. It originated around 1700 in Florence, Italy. Before the piano there was the harpsichord, but it was different.

The first keyboard instrument was developed in 250 B.C. It was the oldest ancestor of the organ. The organ is also a different variation of the piano.

The started with a harp. People had to pluck the strings to get the sound out. Then it turned into the harpsichord which looked like a piano, but it plucked the keys instead of hitting them.

The piano is a percussion instrument. That is because hammers hit the strings to make a sound. An instrument needs to be hit to make a sound for it to be a percussion instrument. The drum is also a percussion instrument.
