Wind and sweeping movements were my main design inspirations. The image of hair whipping behind a rider’s head as she creates a vortex by speeding forward was constant in my thoughts throughout the design process. I wanted a form that emerged out of the earth only to dive back in as representation of the impermanence and instant appearance of wind, breeze, and vortex. The shape is meant to fan the bicycles so that they too are a piece of the sculpture. The rotating bikes enhace the sweeping movement. I also wanted the rack to have two functions. Besides being functional for locking a bicycle, the ramp-like concrete offers passers, cyclists, and loungers a placeto rest. My task was to design a piece that remained elegant while accomplishing all these ideas.

Aj u r s

locationI envisioned the bike rack emerging along a linear pathway in a park or along the water, as though the sidewalk were a windy corridor and thebike rack is subject to the turbulance. Lytle Park, the proposed Banks construction between the sport facilities, or simply along the existing riverwalk weresites I considered. The racks would face the grass or edge while the concrete faces the main walking path so that people can rest on the concrete without climbingover others’ property.
