YEARS AGO, when you were little, the future seemed so distant, 'way beyond next year some· place. Now that that distant future has arrived, there 's still the future for the other little people in your life. Which is all by way of emphasizing that a trust with Ann Arbor Bank and Trust Company is one of the best ways to provide fina ncial security for that future . You don't have to be wealthy, you know, to benefit from a trust. All you really need is some foresi ght . . . and belief that the future is coming.

Director's notes

Lerner and Loewe's "Brigadoon" is their own invented Scottish legend. The Scots have no Brigadoon in their folklore , but they do have in their history. as do we all. a special need for the clements of a Brigadoon. i.e .. peace. beauty. happiness and love.

We have set our "Brigadoon" in the year 1746. when the Highlanders of Bonnie Prince Charlie waged a tragically unsuccessful struggle with England, resulting in the destruction of many clans and the outlawing of bagpipes and kilts. Here was a time when 'escapism' and 'fantasy' were sorely needed.

Perhaps we can gain some appreciation of the elements of a Brigadoon as tonight we share its gifls.

Steve Reynolds began his directing career in 1973 in Connecticut with "Paint Your Wagon". So it's not surprising to find him enthusiastically engineering "Brigadoon" for Ann Arbor Civic Theatre. He has directed every Lerner and Loewe musical with the exception of "My Fair Lady". in less than four years.

Not content merely to pursue the completion of a Lerner/ Loewe 'cycle'. Steve has directed "Man of La Mancha". "Oklahoma!". "Bye Bye Birdie". "The Sound of Music", and "Little Abner" as well as several plays. The student summer theatre he started in Weston. Conn. is still in operation. Its first production? "Camelot". by Lerner and Loewe.

Steve is a high school drama and English teacher in Hazel Park by day. He will direct "Bye Bye Birdie" this summer at Croswell Opera House.

213S. MAIN John E. Burgess has the unusual distinction of having been musical Musical Director director for two consecutive AACT musicals. His was the orchestra JOHN E. BURGESS and chorus which were such a great part of the success of "'Little Mary Sunshine''. He was orchestrator/arranger and assistant musical director for Eastern Michigan University's "Of Thee I Sing" last fall as well.

John has been in three past Civic Theatre orchestras. and his· bassoon was heard in Musket's "Funny Girl" and "Counterpoint", and in Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado" (not the most recent one). He is working on a MMA degree at the U of M School of Music. expecting to work professionally in music and theatre in the future.

THE STAFF

Thomas Bloom (set designer) has designed "The Crucible" and "Cosi Fan Tutte" for the U of M School of Music, and "Tasca" and "La Nozze de Figaro" for the Opera Association of Western Michigan. This is his first design for AACT. Tom is from Grand Rapids , and he obtained his MA degree at another U of M, the University of Minnesota.

Craig C. Campbell (technical director) came here from Iowa to build settings for "Music Man" and "The Mikado", both of which were staged earlier this month. Civic Theatre's good fortune is that he still had the energy to finish "Brigadoon"!

Sophia Farah (makeup) has put grease paint on so many faces so many times that she may be a local legend. But she is also very real, and she always manages to run the makeup room in a style all her own.

Barbara Heston (assistant director) has tilled several different positions in Civic Theatre productions, from chorus member in "Promises, Promises" to prop mistress to membership chair. She was a featured vocalist on MSU television while a student, so perhaps you'll see her on stage again soon.

Michael W. Housefield (lighting designer) has been designing sets and lighting locally for several years, and is one of those designers who can get up from the drawing board and handle a wrench until the wee hours to get a show ready in time for the opening curtain. He has designed for the Croswell Opera House in Adrian, U of M theatres, Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Musket, Comic Opera Guild, Saline Area Players, and of course, AACT. Mike's most recent work was lighting design for "Cosi Fan Tutte" in March.

Sylvia Marie Llewellyn (producer) came to us from Toronto three years ago. She appeared as a farmer's wife in "The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail" for AACT, and was prop mistress as well. Then in Spofford, she got a chance to combine the two tasks, as the prop crew were seen on stage during scene changes. Sylvia has filled several other backstage niches for Civic productions, including assistant director for "Oklahoma!" and producer of "Harvey" last summer. She says she would like to be a producer in "real life".

Diane J. A. Monach (costume designer) is an EMU graduate student in costume design. She designed costumes for "The Little Foxes" at Northwestern U, but had an appendectomy on opening night and never got to see her creations on stage. Diane's grandmother was a Mcfarland, so are the Monachs, so she and her husband may be distantly related. In any case, they're very Scottish, so "Brigadoon" is a natural for Diane! A Texas native, she's looking forward to a design career.

Mark Murphy (assistant stage manager) has been technical director for productions of several local theatrical groups. He is on the board of directors of the Comic Opera Guild, and is chief engineer at radio station W AAM.

Mindy Oddy (stage manager) is a veteran at this position, having guided many players to their "places, please" in productions of Musket, AACT and others. In the daytime she's an elementary teacher.

Louisa Pieper (properties) has been prop chairperson for AACT for many productions. She is co-membership chairperson this year as well. Louisa spends a lot of her daytime hours working at Kempf House.

David Reynolds (rehearsal pianist) has played the rehearsal accompaniment for the last four Civic Theatre musicals. He appeared in the chorus of "Oklahoma!" last Spring. A singer and composer, Dave also acted in "The Potboiler" in the AACT summer season last year, and directed another summer show, "Crawling Arnold". He is an economics student at the U of M.

Paul D. Sisson (set builder) appeared on stage in "Spofford" as a member of the stage crew. Otherwise, he has been very active backstage and in the scene shop, as builder for " Little Mary Sunshine" and for Comic Opera's "The Merry Widow"_ Unfortunately for Ann Arbor, Paul has moved to Lansing a,nd a position as a state engineer.

TeDee A. Theofil (choreographer) danced the dream Laurey in Civic's recent "Oklahoma!". She was the tormentor in "Jesus Christ, Superstar", and worked with the Yeats Ensemble. She has her own Studio J School of Dance here, and has choreographed a number of ballet and jazz pieces. Watch for TeDee's choreography in Michigan Rep's "Kiss Me Kate" this summer.

THE CAST

Barry Allbright (Clan Dalrymple) is a veteran of a half-dozen musicals elsewhere, but this is his first for AACT. His roles have ranged from Finian in "Finian's Rainbow" to Cassia in "Othello". Originally from Vienna, VA, Barry is a W AAM radio announcer.

Allan C. Aubert (Clan MacLaren) is aU ofM sophomore making his theatrical debut. He "doesn't know how he got into this", but being half Scottish might have had something to do with it. Allan is in aerospace engineering, and finds acting and the U of M Chorale to be welcome breaks from the pressure and routine of engineering school.

Julia Broxholm (Fiona MacLaren) first sang for Civic in the pit chorus of "Company". She has had leading roles in the productions of the U of M School of Music, Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and UAC-Musket, most recently as Guenevere in "Camelot". Julia played the part of Fiona in a high school production of "Brigadoon". She is a senior voice performance student of Prof. Eva Likova, and aspires to an operatic career.

Sarah E. Crane (Clan MacGuffie) is a ballet veteran, having been for several years a member of the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet. She is now a member of the Studio I Dance Ensemble. Sarah also is on the track and field hockey teams at Huron High School.

Zerrin K. Crippen (Clan MacMillan) also dances with the Studio 1 Dance Ensemble, and has performed with the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet. She appeared at Slauson School in "South Pacific". She is a student at Pioneer.

Robert C. Douglas (Clan MacLaren) was Ajax I in "La Belle Helene" last year and Cascada in "The Merry Widow" this season, for Comic Opera Guild. He has been in several Gilbert & Sullivan Society choruses. When not performing on stage, Bob teaches elementary school and raises horses in Dexter.

This followed his appearences with Saline Area Players in "Pajama Game'' and with Chelsea Area Players in "Hello. Dolly"_ He is manager of the Briarwood Movies, and a former U of M student in electrical engineering.

Bob Gatzke (Archie Beaton) returns to the Civic stage for the first time since appearing as Larry in "Company". He had several prior musical comedy roles during his II years in Latin America with Ford Motor Company. including the King in "The King and I" in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Bob admits to a golf handicap of ten, and is a painter and photographer.

Vicky Gatzke (Clan Beaton) has her first musical role for Civic Theatre this season. She appeared in "Under Milk Wood" and "Hogan's Goat" recently, after coming here from Mexico. Randy Herbertson (Clan MacGuffie) was in "Oklahoma!" last year, and in three plays at Huron High School. He is returning to Colorado next year to enter the U of Colorado pre-med program. At Huron, Randy is active in football, track and forensics as well as on stage.

Sheridan F. Hunt (Maggie, Clan MacMillan) says her "real home" is North Carolina, but she has been in Ann Arbor for the past eight years, and appeared in "Marne" for AACT while in high school. In the interim, she has had many roles in JLO and school productions, and is now a senior theatre student at EMU. Even though she once was a "waitress to a chorus of tap dancing donuts", Sheri aspires to more serious drama, including Shakespeare.

John Jarrett (Clan Dalrymple) appears in his third consecutive AACT musical, having been in the choruses of both "Oklahoma!" and "Little Mary Sunshine". In between singing assignments he found time to play Hopwood in "Spofford", and helped with props for that production. John is employed at the U of M medical center.

Don Krebs (Clan MacLaren) is an expatriate from the West coast, hoping to return to Seattle eventually. Among his credits are roles in "Trial By Jury", "H. M. S. Pinafore" and "Oklahoma!".

Once she strayed to the Gilbert & Sullivan Society to appear in "The Sorcerer". Carolyn counts music and theatre as hobbies, while her professional career is as a psychiatric social worker.

Sumi Lewis (Clan Dalrymple) is a dancer studying at the MeKush studio in Ann Arbor. She has danced the dream Laurey in "Oklahoma!" at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Sumi was a choreographer and dancer in the recent Huron High School musical revue.

Lois McDonnell Lintner (Clan MacLeod) counts five previous AACT plays and two musicals among her stage appearances, plus forays into U Players and Musket productions. She also has been prominent on makeup, props and costume crews, as well as having a hand in several of Civic's tiner social occasions. Lois has been a teacher, farm manager, and currently a wineseller. She "commutes" from South Lyon.

Eric Lipsitt (Frank, Clan MacLeod) takes time out from his prelaw studies to make his first AACT appearance in "Brigadoon". His previous theatrical experiences have included "Guys and Dolls", "Sweet Charity", and "Dark of the Moon". Eric is a "frustrated athlete" from Southfield.

Peter E. Manis (Sandy MacGregor, Clan MacMillan) is a young Ann Arbor singeractor with a long list of stage appearances. He was in the chorus of" Annie Get Your Gun" for AACT, and had a non-musical role in "Ernest in Love". He has played Tulsa in "Gypsy", and sung in "Hello, Dolly", "The Apple Tree", "Jericho" and "Kismet". Peter has performed with the U of M Men's Glee Club for three years, and was in the MSV A 1976 Honors Choir and the Festival Choir.

Vera McEwen (Clan Beaton) may be one of the youngest performers ever to play an "adult" in a Civic Theatre show. Although this is her first play, who knows? This may be the start of something!

Mary Liz McNamara (Jean MacLaren) could be considered a "Northerner", since she is from·Grayling. As an Ann Arborite presently, though, she has been seen in "Oh, What A Lovely War", a Stephen Sondheim review, and "Jesus Christ, Superstar". Mary Liz says she has one true ambition: "to be a singer in a bar". Talent scouts, please note!

The Rev. Canon G. Alexander Miller (Mr. Lundie) returns to the Mendelssohn stage for the second time this season. All will remember his Chief Brown Bear in "Little Mary Sunshine". Fr. Alex is retired, but since he knew no one would believe that of him, he continues working, assisting the Rector at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. He says he has been "acting" for years, and is glad that now he can do so on stage!

Robert N. Miller (Charlie Dalrymple) returns for his fifth Civic musical, the others being "Oklahoma!", "South Pacific", "Fiddler on the Roof', and "Fiorello!". He has performed with comic opera groups in New York and Oxford, England, and has appeared in and directed many musicals, G & S and opera productions, locally and elsewhere. Bob is a fifth grade teacher, and would probably tell us of more accomplishments if we had room to print them. He was seen last as Sir Dinadan in Musket's "Camelot".

Kenneth Parada (Piper) is a U of M pre-med freshman from Hazel Park. He is a member of the Clan MacRae Pipe Band of Detroit. Ken has been in numerous piping competitions, and won several awards. This is not his first stage appearance as an actor, as he played the defense attorney in "The Case of Humanity vs. Pontius Pilate".

James Posante (Harry Beaton) just finished taking a dance class from the cast of "A Chorus Line" which recently appeared at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit. He is a veteran of many AACT productions, most recently "Little Mary Sunshine", and "Oklahoma!", which he directed and choreographed . Jim is choreographer for the aMaizin' Blues, recently directed "The Fantasticks" at the Campus Inn, and is directing/ choreographing "The Boy Friend" at Greenhills School in May. He also teaches dance workshops at Civic Theatre in his spare time.

Steve Powell (Clan MacMillan) is a native of Oak Park. He is quite an experienced performer, with aMaizin' Blues among his many activities.

Alison Reed Robison (Meg Brockie) appeared as Annie in "Annie Get Your Gun", and as the maid in "Ernest in Love", for AACT. She was Nellie in "South Pacific" and Alice in "You Can't Take It With You" for Saline Area Players. Alison has lived in Coventry, England, and "Ann Arbor, mostly". She is an elementary school vocal music director in Westland.

Judy Robison (Clan MacLeod) appears in her fourth Civic Theatre chorus, beginning with "Promises, Promises", "Oklahoma!" and "Little Mary Sunshine", in which she was Cora, from the Eastchester Finishing School. A dental assistant, Judy was in "Guys and Dolls" and "Promises, Promises" in Pennsylvania before coming to Ann Arbor.

Liz Rosenzweig (Clan Beaton) is on her way from Bradford, PA, to "outside L.A.". A graduate student who plans to stage manage professionally, this is Liz's first local stage appearance. She has been stage manager, assistant director or assistant to the lighting designer for a half-dozen recent U of M productions.

Kathryn Sanders (Jane Ashton) is a graduate of the Academy of Dramatic Art at Oakland University. She was born in Detroit, lives in Ypsilanti, and works in Ann Arbor. Someday she hopes to go to New York to study acting. Kathy says she loves to travel but never can afford it. Would someone please tell her that New York is East of Detroit? She seems to be heading the wrong way.

Marie F. Simecek (Clan MacLaren) played Olga in Comic Opera Guild's "The Merry Widow". This is her first AACT show. A vocal music teacher in Ypsilanti schools, Marie sings in the choir at St. Paul's Lutheran Church here. She belongs to Mu Phi Epsilon music sorority.

Charles Sutherland (Tommy Albright) has been on this stage so many times it must seem like home. He has done many G & S shows, Civic Theatre musicals, and other productions as well. Charlie was Captain Jim in "Little Mary Sunshine" last fall, and directed "Spofford" in between that and "Brigadoon". He's on the AACT board of directors, teaches third grade in Detroit, and has already signed up for Michigan Rep '77, so look for him there this summer.

Hal Trebilcox (Clan MacLeod) is another who is reticent about his achievements. Let's just say that if you've seen him on stage before, tell the people sitting next to you!

Ted Van Sickle (Andrew MacLaren) returns to Ann Arbor Civic Theatre after a twelve year absence. Those who saw Civic's 1965 production of "Oklahoma!" may remember a slightly younger Ted as Jud Frye. Perhaps we'll see him onstage again, prior to 1989!

Gwen Werner (Clan MacLeod) is a Pioneer High sophomore studying dance at Studio 1, where she is a member of the Studio 1 Dance Ensemble. Gwen is also on the Pioneer gymnastics team.

Karen Woodward (Clan Dalrymple) was Gracie in Huron High's "Music Man". She danced with the Ypsilanti Area Dancers for a year. An antique bicycle fanatic, Karen is in special education for the hearing impaired at Eastern Michigan U.

Nan Worthington (Clan MacMillan) says this is the first time she's "strayed" from the Gilbert & Sullivan Society to be in a Civic Theatre show. She is a veteran of fifteen G&S productions, onstage and behind the scenes. Nan says she still hasn't seen the Arctic Circle or New Zealand.
