GENERAL INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE EDUCATION INDUSTRY

History of the Education Industry

Education has been practiced since time immemorial to instill social and cultural values. In

the ancient times, the education system was verbal, carried out generally by the elders of the

family. The writing system developed around 3500 BC, enabling the recording and sharing of

information. In most ancient societies, the state of literacy was bleak for centuries.

The education industry was initially associated with law, trade and commerce, religion and

civil administration. Formal education was available to only a small fraction of the

population. The system developed in most countries after 1850 CE.

The modern education industry consists of training by professionals and organized

instructions with respect to systematic curricula and pedagogy.

Demand and Supply Drivers of the Education Industry

The demand drivers of the education sector include:

Household disposable income.

Cost of education.

Opportunity cost of education (education versus job).

Cultural factors (opinion on education of girls).

Role of government to boost education.

The supply drivers of the industry include:

Availability of labour force (teachers and administrators).

Government funding (to establish affordable education centers)

Changes in social outlook.

Page 7: ANISH

The present educational system of India is an implantation of British rulers. Wood's Dispatch

of 1854 laid the foundation of present system of education in India. Before the advent of

British in India, education system was private one. With the introduction of Wood's Dispatch

known as Magna Carta of Indian education, the whole scenario changed. The main purpose

of it was to prepare Indian Clerks for running local administration. Under it the means of

school educations were the vernacular languages while the higher education was granted in

English only. British government started giving funds to indigenous schools in need of help

and thus slowly some of the schools became government-aided.

Contemplating on the new system which was introduced Mahatma Gandhi expressed his

anguish in following words, "I say without fear of my figures being challenged successfully,

that today India is more illiterate than it was fifty or a hundred years ago, and so is Burma,

because the British administrators, when they came to India, instead of taking hold of things

as they were, began to root them out. They scratched the soil and began to look at the root,

and left the root like that, and the beautiful tree perished. The village schools were not good

enough for the British administrator, so he came out with his program. Every school must

have so much paraphernalia, building, and so forth. Well, there were no such schools at all.

There are statistics left by a British administrator which show that, in places where they have

carried out a survey, ancient schools have gone by the board, because there was no

recognition for these schools, and the schools established after the European pattern were too

expensive for the people, and therefore they could not possibly overtake the thing. I defy

anybody to fulfill a program of compulsory primary education of these masses inside of a

century. This very poor country of mine is ill able to sustain such an expensive method of

Page 8: ANISH

education. Our state would revive the old village schoolmaster and dot every village with a

school both for boys and girls. "

Education encompasses teaching and learning specific skills, and also something less tangible

but more profound: the imparting of knowledge, positive judgment and well-developed

wisdom. Education has as one of its fundamental aspects the imparting of culture from

generation to generation (see socialization). Education means to draw out, facilitating

realization of self-potential and latent talents of an individual. It is an application of

pedagogy, a body of theoretical and applied research relating to teaching and learning and

draws on many disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, computer science, linguistics,

neuroscience, sociology and anthropology. Education is not a process of pouring in some

knowledge in to an individual. It is a process of acquiring. It is a perfection from the

perfection. Education is the manifestation of perfection already existing in man.

The education of an individual human begins at birth and continues throughout life. (Some

believe that education begins even before birth, as evidenced by some parents playing music

or reading to the baby in the womb in the hope it will influence the child development.) For

some, the struggles and triumphs of daily life provide far more instruction than does formal

schooling (thus Mark Twain admonition to "never let school interfere with your education").

Family members may have a profound educational effect — often more profound than they

realize — though family teaching may function very informally.

Page 9: ANISH

Education is the base for economic growth as well as social transformation for any country.

Among all the key indicators of socio-economic development like economy's growth rate,

literacy rate, birth rate, death rate and infant mortality rate (IMR), the literacy rate of the

country is one of the most vital one as the rise and fall of others largely depend upon

country's literacy rate. In India, high literacy rate leads to low birth rate as well as low IMR

and it also increases life expectancy rate. So, the importance of education industry in India

can be understood.

The education system in India is much more improved these days and is one of the leading

ones in the world. It is also one of the biggest contributors to the economic growth of the

nation. Besides various government initiatives, the role of the private institutions in the

development of education industry in India cannot be denied. India's private education market

was worth $40 billion in 2008, which is expected to reach $68 billion by the year 2012.

However, there are also some glooming statistics as well. Despite such rising investment in

education industry, 40% of country's population is still illiterate. Only 15% of the students

can go to next level to reach high school.

The Higher Education

India has world's third largest higher secondary education system with a number of

institutions. More and more students are going for higher education these days. The result

gets reflected on the number of students enrolling for higher education. The number of

institutions is also increasing day by day. India has got following numbers of educational

institutions (as on December 31, 2007):

Page 10: ANISH

Education Industry In India

Indian educational system is considered to be one of the best in the world, however there is

huge gap when compared to the global standards in terms of people being able to think

independently and taking up entrepreneurship.

With the educational industry booming in India there is a significant increase in the number

of private colleges offering various courses, some of them really do not offer value addition

to the students and their future hang in balance.

Presently the educational Industry is USD 50 billion strong and it expected to show an

increase of 12% in 2010 and by 2012 it expected to touch USD 80 billion. Universities and

colleges in India have grown at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of over 5% and

6% respectively, since independence. The statistics clearly shows that more number of

private institutes is going to surface offering various courses. Not only full time educational

institutions but various other training centers offering computer education, entrance coaching,

career counseling etc.

This is further going to add to the confusions that this generation students are facing.  The top

creamy layer will make it to the premier institutes like IIT or IIM, the rest of them struggle

with their higher studies in tier 2 tier 3 or tier 4 institutes. The challenge of identifying a good

institute remains a mystery.

Most of the students will be at their most important cross roads of identify the right institute

and the right course. Solving such an enigma is to be tackled by driving more interaction with

the experienced professionals from across Industry. More and more professionals are also

coming forward to help students because they have gone through tough situations in their

career as well as in their education because of lack of proper guidance during their times.

Page 11: ANISH

GROWTH OF EDUCATION INDUSTRY

With its plurality and paradoxes, India never ceases to fascinate. And education in India is

only one among various other elements that have captured the attention of the world. While

the United Nations is worried about the presence of a large number of illiterates, various

other countries are amazed by the quality of some of the human resources that the Indian

education system has produced.

The Vedas, Puranas, Ayurveda,Yoga, Kautilya's Arthasahtra are only some of the milestones

that the traditional Indian knowledge system boasts of. There are evidences of imparting

formal education in ancient India under the Gurukul system.

Under the Gurukul system, young boys who were passing through the Brahmacharya stage of

life had to stay at the Guru or the teacher's home and complete their education.

Although the ancient system of education has produced many geniuses and still a major area

of research, it was hardly egalitarian. Women and people of lower castes gradually lost their

right to educate themselves. The spread of Jainism, Buddhism, Bhakti and Sufi movements

did have some liberating effects on the condition of the women, sudras and atisudras. But it

is the English language and the reformation movements of the 19th century that had the most

liberating effect in pre-independent India. Thus, the British’s, although rightly criticized for

Page 12: ANISH

devastating the Indian economy, can also be credited for bringing a revolution in the Indian

education system.

India Education Present Condition:

Soon after gaining independence in 1947, making education available to all had become a

priority for the government. As discrimination on the basis of caste and gender has been a

major impediment in the healthy development of the Indian society, they have been made

unlawful by the Indian constitution.

The 86th constitutional amendment has also made elementary education a fundamental right

for the children between the age group- 6 to 14. According to the 2001 census, the total

literacy rate in India is 65.38%. The female literacy rate is only 54.16%. The gap between

rural and urban literacy rate is also very significant in India. This is evident from the fact that

only 59.4% of rural population are literate as against 80. 3% urban population according to

the 2001 census.

In order to develop the higher education system, the government had established the

University Grants Commission in 1953. The primary role of UGC has been to regulate the

standard and spread of higher education in India. There has been a marked progress in the

expansion of higher education if we look at the increase of higher educational institutes in

India. The higher education system in India comprise of more than17000 colleges, 20 central

universities, 217 State Universities, 106 Deemed to Universities and 13 institutes of Natioanl

importance. This number will soon inflate as the setting up of 30 more central universities, 8

new IITs, 7 IIMs and 5 new Indian Institutes of Science are now proposed.

Page 13: ANISH

Education System in India:

The present education system in India mainly comprises of primary education, secondary

education, senior secondary education and higher education. Elementary education consists

of eight years of education. Each of secondary and senior secondary education consists of

two years of education. Higher education in India starts after passing the higher secondary

education or the 12th standard. Depending on the stream, doing graduation in India can take

three to five years. Post graduate courses are generally of two to three years of duration. After

completing post graduation, scope for doing research in various educational institutes also

remains open.

Prominent Educational Institutes in India:

There are quite a good number of educational institutes in India that can compete with the

best educational institutes of the world. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian

Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institutes of Science, National Law Schools,

Jawaharlal Nehru University are some such institutes.

Education for the Marginalized in India:

As education is the means for bringing socio- economic transformation in a society, various

measures are being taken to enhance the access of education to the marginalized sections of

the society. One such measure is the introduction of the reservation system in the institutes of

higher education. Under the present law, 7.5% seats in the higher educational institutes are

reserved for the scheduled tribes, 15% for scheduled castes and 27% for the non creamy

Page 14: ANISH

layers of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Under the Indian constitution, various

minority groups can also set up their own educational institutes. Efforts are also being taken

to improve the access to higher education among the women of India by setting up various

educational institutes exclusively for them or reserving seats in the already existing institutes.

The growing acceptance of distance learning courses and expansion of the open university

system is also contributing a lot in the democratization of higher education in India.

THE MUCH sought after Indian workforce that has propelled India to the top of several

global competitive indices is not only attracting prospective employers to the country but also

the education system behind this workforce is now driving a prolific education market. It

seems to be a boom time for the education industry in India as the concept of business

through education catches up with the Indian market.

India’s youth, often referred to as its demographic dividend, accounts for over 50 per cent of

its total population, with 367 universities and 18,000 colleges with half-a-million teachers

and about 11 million students on the rolls, India could reap huge returns off its demographic

dividend. Speaking on the topic, Ritesh Hemrajani, Consultant, IMS, said if one looks at the

last five years there are about 1,500 management colleges, close to about 3,500 engineering

colleges and about 1,200 medical colleges. In terms of private schools mushrooming day in

and day out and a majority of the new institutions being private, if one wants to put a number

to it, the privately-managed part of it would not be anything less than 20 to 25 thousand

crores.

Page 15: ANISH

In recent months, the education segment has also seen the rising interest of private equity

players. India-focused PE firm Gaja Capital Partners invested 8.25 million dollars in Career

Launcher. Similarly, SAIF Partners invested 10 million dollars in the English training

academy Veta and ICA Infotech. Some of the other listed companies in the education

segment are Educomp Solutions, which posted a return of 374 per cent. Everson Systems,

which got listed in August 2007, gave a return of 130 per cent in just five months. Not far

behind are the older horses such as Aptech and NIIT, which fetched returns of 162 per cent

and 124 per cent last year. He also added, “In the next five years, I don’t see any reason why

we shouldn’t be looking at a thousand crore market.”

It is believed that based on the current and future manpower requirements of the various

sectors, there is a huge demand-supply gap in the education space.

Conclusion:

Despite all the efforts to develop the education system in India, access, equity and quality of

education in India continue to haunt the policy makers till this date. This has mainly been due

to the widespread poverty and various prejudices. The inability to check the drop out rates

among the marginalized sections of the population is another cause of worry. However, the

renewed emphasis in the education sector in the 11th five year plan and increased expenditure

in both primary and higher education can act as palliatives for the Indian education system.

WORK PROFILE

As the company was dealing in education domain , so I have to visit all the engineering col-

leges of the Delhi & NCR in respect of the marketing process and to aware all the colleges

about our services.

In Thinnkware my work profile was of Business Development Executive. I was given the

responsibilities of handling all the marketing activities of company. It included the e-

marketing , uplifting the google ranking of our company’s website, posting advertisements on

web sites, and all the networking sites, which includes all the online promotion too.

I was the part of our company’s current project , which was of giving summer training to

the B.TECH students which was a compulsion part of their academic course, and our com-

pany was targeting these students as their customers to provide them their summer training

under our guidance which was a paid training. So my work was to turn these students for the

training program.

For this project I was fully given information by company’s C.M.O. The strategies were

made by him for us in a very systematic manner to achieve the success of this project.

Firstly I was assigned to visit all the engineering colleges and meet the Director, Training

Placement officers , and the HOD’S of computer and I.T department to inform them about

our summer training programs and find out the dates and fixing the dates for organizing

summer training for their students.

Later on there was to do some work at the ground level. In this I have directly contacted

Page 39: ANISH

the students during my visit to colleges. It was more fruitful work because while contacting

students like (Class Representatives) I was able to get the data of the whole students group.

So direct calls were made to them for the summer training, which also yielded fast results

and the students turned up in large quantity giving the company good business.

Then I have also given the responsibilities of printing advertisement, I have to order printing

Vendors for the Company’s Banner , Visiting cards of all company’s employee’s

Advertisement Brochures , Letter head and Envelopes of the company, the summer training

program Posters which were to be displayed in colleges to attract students.

My next responsibilities was to take care of the company’s Training Centre , where the

students were given training. I have to take care for all the things which were required by the

students during their training session and to manage the training centre in well condition.

To regularly contact the college authorities and mailing them to take a fixed

date of the meeting with them , so that they agree on our proposal and send their college stu-

dents in our training centre to join our summer training programs.

Also visited outside station in cities like Jaipur and Udaipur for the company’s presentations

And meeting with concerned persons for discussing the business proposals and to made some

deal in favour of our company, which also resulted positive giving the business to the

company and me too for my personal satisfaction.

Page 40: ANISH

KEY LEARNINGS

Learned about the company’s motives and the strategy of organization that is to be

implemented in future also for running the company smoothly and following the set up paths

and system which is designed .I also learned a new thing in my E- MARKETING work that

how to post on web sites and how to lift up the google ranking of any website.

While working for the benefits of the engineering students I also come to know that with

increasing technological competence, students need to dip into the real technological scenario

and assimilate as many skills possible, so get ready for the real race.

As I know in selling strong sales skills are crucial, and experts in Marketing and Sales can

earn significant salaries and commissions, even in periods of down markets. So strong skills

in Marketing and Sales given me a competitive advantage, and professionals in the field are

powerful influences in consumer selection of goods and services. Skilled and experienced

salespeople can only attract a customer as I experienced while working here.

This project of our company was an innovative summer internship program that exposes

talented undergraduate students to research in Embedded System, Robotics & MATLAB with

the help of experienced team of Thinnkware.

There are very glorious conditions of working here. Ample of things are there to learn from

our seniors who have such a good knowledge and skills along with their experiences.

They just help us like the mentors and being working as a trainee they really help us

with our future prospective and teaching us from the ground level to clear our organizational

Page 41: ANISH

working base.

I also grasped the organizational culture of the company , I learned the basic practicals of

Marketing , how the marketing strategies are made , how the customers are targeted for

the products and services, what is the best suitable time of marketing, how the

advertisements to be carried on and with how much frequencies.

To evaluate the performances of the employee and improve on their weakness weekly

company’s meetings were held on weekends , in this meeting each employee performance

is evaluated and to help them work in areas in which they are lacking. This really enhanced

my working stamina and the changes which I have to made for my better performance

in the company.

I learn how to deal with the customers , to maintain a relation with them which will work

for the long terms of the business , and the every possible ways of turning of the customers

in favour of the organization. By handling the responsibilities of advertisement process I also

learned the system of effective advertisement which will be the best sourse to attract the

customers. The basics of effective advertisement sources so that the information can be

carried clearly and in simplicity to make customers aware and understand.

So it was really experience of learning things for my future growth and applying all these

Principles and system for the future , and I really thanks this company for making me feel

Like a good learner while handling my responsibilities.

Finally learned how to tackle the sales and marketing responsibilities and working in an

organised and structured manner, and how to work in the corporate environment and

in a systematic way. Learned some useful marketing tips from the seniors and applied them

Page 42: ANISH

in my task.

One of the biggest problems facing small businesses is finding customers. And while cold

calling or mass emailing might helped me make contact with a lot of peoples and being in

regular contact with them it made me easy to remind them for our proposals.

FINALLY HERE ARE THE SOME GOLDEN POINTS WHICH I WILL ALWAYS KEEP

WITH ME WHICH I LEARNED AND ANALYZED WHILE WORKING IN

THINNKWARE ;

1. Talking customers.

Have real person-to-person conversations with as many customers as you can. If you have a

lot of customers relative to your employees, then you’ll need to prioritize. Find ways to have

real, meaningful and ongoing conversations with them.

This might mean inviting some to lunch. It might mean hosting get-togethers at your

business. It might start with a survey and end with a phone call or a meeting. For others it

might be virtual conversations using email or phone calls.

2. Serve their needs.

Of course you’re doing this to make your company better. But everything you do in your

customer referral effort needs to be useful from your customer’s perspective. Educate them

while you engage them.

Page 43: ANISH

3. Engaging customers.

Find multiple ways to get your customers involved. For some people, just a regular phone

call or lunch will be enough. For others you might get their help finding solutions to

challenges you’re facing (using brainstorming or other facilitated meetings). Create

communities for your customers to participate in. Forums and blogs are great for this.

Software and online companies have done this for years but so can small businesses.

4. Hire customer friendly.

You can train, teach and coach a lot of things but being friendly is not one of them. And

beyond just friendly, you should look for employees who make a habit of focusing on the

customer, who go out of their way to take care of customer’s needs. One of the best ways to

do this is to keep your eyes open when you are a customer. When you meet people who are

very good, tell them what you do. Start a relationship so if they look for other work they

might call you.

5. Post reminders.

This sounds basic but it works. Make posters of the top things your customers want from you.

Include your “customer service standards” so everyone knows what the expectations are.

Place them around your business so everyone can see them. Also, use post-it notes, emails,

customer service calendars and any other fun ways you can think of to refresh your

employee’s memories.

Page 44: ANISH

6. Celebrate good news.

When customers give you and your staff good feedback, share it. Have a party! Let all your

team know about it. Show your employees how important it is. Post it where people will see

it. Send emails. Talk about it at staff meetings.

When your company is driven by service, your customers will notice. And they’ll like it.

Serve them well and they’ll keep coming back. Even better, they’ll tell their friends too!

Defining the research problem

The higher educational sector globally is more competitive than it has ever been. Educational

establishments are under closer scrutiny than ever before, budgets are tight, job markets are

enormously competitive and students are becoming increasingly discerning in the

establishments and courses they choose.

Against this background, the need for schools, colleges, universities and other educational

organisations to carry out market research and keep a close check on internal and external

offerings is self-evident. Some of the questions that might need answering include:

Why do student applicants choose one establishment over another?

How satisfied are students with what you offer? How is this changing over time?

Could you be doing more to improve your profile’ of education by joining these

technical courses?

Are you taking care of all of the needs of today’s competitive environment among

students?

How content are your knowledge?

How a student can come to know about such companies?

Could communication and support be improved?

Which qualifications are needed in the future and how can you offer these?

What external factors are shaping the sector and will become matters of concern for

the future?

Where are the job opportunities outside the University?

Page 46: ANISH

Necessity of defining the problem

Good direct marketing begins with good information. So take time to think about the

following issues BEFORE you get into copy or design. And feel free to alter this list or add

any other pieces of information you need. The more thorough you can be now, the more

MARKETING RESEARCH PROBLEM

Page 48: ANISH

You have an amazing idea that is original and you think can’t be beaten. Your friends and

family are in full support of you and think that your product or service will be a winner, but

how do you know for sure how the rest of the world will react?

Maybe your original, homemade marmalade will just sit on the shelves or could not even be

accepted in stores after months of preparation and money spent. People might be interested in

a window-cleaning service, but if the prices are too high or there is too much competition you

will have a hard time in your new business.

Research shows that 70% of all new businesses fail because of inadequate market research or

because of no research at all.

Market Research is vital before starting any business. The process of marketing research has

to be systematic and performed in stages for it to work properly.

Page 49: ANISH

What is the marketing research process?

The marketing research process are the six steps that would compile a marketing research

survey.

Building anything costs money so make sure you have done your research!

Marketing research process steps

Indentifying and Defining the problem

This step needs to be performed before moving onto anything else. Basically ask yourself

what has to be done.

Developing your approach

Page 50: ANISH

Once you have identified the problem you can move onto the approach you would like to take

according to the environment you are in. This should also involve the team you are with and

their skills. You could draw up an analysis of your whole project and what need to be done.

Research Design

This is the step you need to think about the most. Some people will contact research market

companies for this step as it is the most vital. Information such as questionaire samples,

design and data analysis will be captured in this step.

Collecting of Data

This is the process where the data is collected and the different ways depending on what is

suitable to you.

Performing Data Analysis

This can range from a simple to a more complex project using various tools . It depends how

the survey was compiled.

International Marketing Research Process

A few things have to be taken into consideration when marketing internationally because of

customs, cultures and traditions so secondary information has to gathered for each country.

After doing this the information has to be compared.

Marketing your product

If it is your plan to sell your product in the stores then go and see the managers of such stores.

Have a plan and an appointment. Don’t be vague about your product. Take a sample with you

Page 51: ANISH

and be prepared for rejection. If you are rejected ask yourself the question why the supplier

didn’t want to take your product in the first place. Move on with a positive frame of mind. It

is much better to do it this way than spending lots of money on your finished products to find

that they are not selling in the end.

Business opportunity leads

A business opportunity lead will bring you in more business and you will need to plan

to bring in the customers. It doesn't happen overnight. Its not difficult to find a job

and like what you do. You can...

Page 52: ANISH

Marketing your Services

If you aim to is be in the service industry the best way to go about business is to arm yourself

with a clipboard, attached with questionaires relevant to your service. For example if it is a

window-cleaning business your plan should be to ask questions such as "how much would

they pay for such a service, would they actually be interested and how do would they clean

their windows."

Some companies will draw up questionnaires for you at a small fee for a more professional

look, but this is all up to you.

Using the internet for a case like this might not be such a bright unless you have the addresses

of houses and companies you have looked at with a lot of window space. However having

direct contact, I feel is more of a personal approach. Walk down a couple of streets where

there are a lot of windows per house and go to companies where you can see their windows

need a good clean and they are difficult to reach.

You could also do some personal interviews. These are quite common and normally

recorded, observing different reactions. There is also another method called Focus Groups

where you will interview a group of people at one time. A moderator leads the group where a

discussion is formed within the group. Focus group questions would be similar to an

interview structure with the exception of more people participating. About three groups need

to be interviewed to get the correct balance.

Conclusion

Marketing research by itself does not arrive at marketing decisions, nor does it guarantee that

the organization will be successful in marketing its products. However, when conducted in a

systematic, analytical, and objective manner, marketing research can reduce the uncertainty

in the decision-making process and increase the probability and magnitude of success.

We may conclude by saying that the task of defining a research problem, very often, follows

a sequential pattern- the problem is stated in a general way, the ambiguities are resolved,

thinking and rethinking process results is a more specific formulation so that it may be a

realistic one in terms of the available data and resources and is also analytically meaningful.

All this result in a well defined research problem that is not only meaningful from an

operational point of view, but is equally capable of paving the way for the development of

working hypotheses and for means of solving the problem itself.

It can be seen then that differences do exist between THINNKWARE and other companies.

This can be seen in the marketing variables which are the basis for segmentation such as age

and geographic variables. In a competitive market, both companies must identify and target

different market segments in order to remain at the cutting edge. Differences between the

companies are evident with respect to product, pricing, place and promotion.

THINNKWARE relies heavily on value: quality is more than something we see or feel .On

the other hand it relies on its success resulting from superior products and high standards of

performance.

OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH

The purpose of research is to discover the answers to questions through the application

of scientific procedures. The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden

and which has not been discovered yet. Through each research study has its own specific

purpose, we may think of research objectives as falling into a number of following broad

groupings :

To gain familiarity with a phenomenon and to achieve new insights into it.

(studies with this object in view are termed as EXPLORATORY OR FORMUL-

ATIVE RESEARCH studies )

To portray accurately the characteristics of a particular individual , situation

or a group. (studies with these object in view are known as DESCRIPTIVE

research studies.

To test the hypothesis of a casual relationship between the variables.(such

Studies are known as HYPOTHESIS TESTING RESEARCH.)

In short , the search of knowledge through objective and systematic method

of finding solution to a problem is research. The systematic approach

concerning the generalisation and the formulation of theory is also a research.

As such the research is the consisting of the enunciating the problem, formulation

of a hypothesis , collecting the facts of data , analysing the facts and reaching

certain conclusions.

Page 55: ANISH

FOLLOWING ARE THE POINTS OF THE OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH

1) Desire to get a research degree along with its consequential benefits .

2) Desire to face the challenges in solving the unsolved problem, i.e, concern over practical problems initiates research.

3) Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work.

4) Desire to be of services to society.

5) Desire to get respectability.

This is not an exhaustive list of factors motivating people to undertake research

studies. Many more factors such as directives of government, employment

conditions, curiosity about new things, desire to understand causal relationships,

social thinking and awakening, and the like may as well motivate (of at times

compel) people to perform research operations.

The study of research methodology gives the student the necessary training

in gathering material and arranging or card-indexing them, participation in the field

work when required, and also training in techniques for the collection of data

appropriate to particular problems, in the use of statistics, questionnaires and

controlled experimentation and in recording evidence, sorting it out and interpreting

it. In fact, importance of knowing the methodology of research of how research is

done stems from the following considerations:-

For one who preparing himself for a career of carrying out research, the

importance of knowing research methodology and research techniques is obvious since the same constitute the tools of his trade. The knowledge of methodology provides good training

Page 56: ANISH

specially to the new research worker enables him to do better research. It helps him to

develop disciplined thinking or a ‘bent of mind’ to observe the field

objectively. Hence, those aspiring for careerism in research mush

develop the skill of using research techniques and must thoroughly

understand the logic behind them.

.Knowledge of how to do research will inculcate the ability to evaluate

and use research results with reasonable confidence. In other words, we

can state that the knowledge of research methodology is helpful in

various fields such as government of business administration,

community development and social work where persons are increasingly

called upon to evaluate and use research results for action.

I. When one knows how research is done, then one may have the

satisfaction of acquiring a new intellectual tool which can become a way

of looking at the world and of judging every day experience.

Accordingly,

it enables use to make intelligent decisions concerning problems facing

us in practical life at different points of time. Thus, the knowledge of

research methodology provides tools to took at things in life objectively.

II. In this scientific age , all of us are in many ways consumers of research

results and we can use them intelligently provided we are able to judge

the adequacy of the methods by which they have been obtained. The

knowledge of methodology helps the consumer of research results to

evaluate them and enables him to take rational decisions.

Page 57: ANISH

Significance of Research

“All progress is born of inquiry. Doubt is often better than overconfidence, for it leads to

inquiry, and inquiry leads to invention” is a famous Husdson Maxim in context of which the

significance of research can well be understood. Increased amounts of research make

progress possible. Research inculcates

scientific and inductive thinking and it promoted the

development of logical habits thinking and organisation.

The role of research in several fields of applied economics, whether related to business of to

the economy as a whole, has greatly increased in modern times. The increasingly complex

nature of business and government has focused attention on the use of research in solving

operational problems. Research, as an aid to economic policy, has gained added

importance, both for government and business.

Research provides the basis for nearly all government policies in our economic system. For

instance, government’s budgets rest in part on an analysis of the needs has to be equated to

probable revenues and this is a field where research is most needed. Through research we

can devise alternatives policies and can as well examine the consequences of each of these

alternatives. Decision-making may not be a part of research, but research certainly facilities

the decisions of the policy maker. Government has also to chalk out programmes for dealing

with all facets of the country’s existence and most of these will be related directly of

indirectly to economic conditions. The plight of cultivators, the problems of big and small

business and industry, working conditions, trade union activities, the problems of

distribution, even the size and nature of defence services are matters requiring research.

Thus, research is considered necessary with regard to the allocation of nation’s resources.

Another area in government, where research is necessary, is collecting information on the

economic and social structure of the nation. Such information indicates what is happening

in the economy and what changes are taking place. Research has its special significance in

solving various operational and planning problem of business and industry. Operations

Page 58: ANISH

research and market research , along with motivational research, are considered crucial and

their results assist, in more than one way, in taking business decisions. Market research is

the investigation of the structure and development of a market for the purpose of

formulating efficient policies for purchasing, production and sales. Operations research

refers to the application of mathematical, logical and analytical techniques to the solution of

business problems of cost minimization or of profit maximization or what can be termed as

optimisation problems. Motivational research of determining why people behaves as they

do is mainly concerned with market characteristics. In other words it is concerned with the

determination of motivates underlying the consumer(marker) behaviour. Research is

equally important for social scientists in stying social relationships and in seeking answers to

various social problems. It provides the intellectual satisfaction of knowing a few things just

for the sake of knowledge and also has practical utility for the social scientist to know for

the sake of being able to do something better or in a more efficient manner. Research in

sciences is concerned both with knowledge for its own sake and with knowledge for what it

can contribute to practical concerns. This double emphasis is perhaps especially appropriate

in the case of social science. On the other hand, its responsibility as a science is to develop a

body of principles that make possible the understanding and perfection of the whole range

of human interactions. On the other hand, because of its social orientation, it is increasingly

being looked to for practical guidance in solving immediate problems of human relations.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

The formidable problem that follows the task of defining the research problem is the

Preparation of design of the research project, popularly known as the “research

design “.decisions regarding what, where, when, how much, by what means concerning

of an enquiry or a research study constitute research design.

Page 59: ANISH

“A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collections and analysis of data in a

manner that aims to combine the relevance to the research purpose with economy in

procedure.” In fact , the research deign is the conceptual structure within which research is

conducted. It constitutes the blueprint for the collection , management and analysis of data.

As such the design includes an outline of what researcher will do from writing the hypothesis

and its operational implications to the final analysis of data.

Research design is needed because it facilitates the smooth sailing of the various research

Operations , thereby making the research as efficient as possible yielding maximum

Information with minimal expenditure of effort , time and money. Just for as better, economical

attractive construction of a house , we need a blueprint well thought out and prepared by an

expert architect, similarly we need a research design and plan in advance of data collection

and analysis of our research project. Research design stands for advance planning of the

methods to be adopted for collecting the relevant data and the techniques to be used in

their analysis.

Preparation of research design should be done with great care as any error in it may upset the

entire project. Research design in fact has a great bearing on the reliability of the results

arrived at end and as such constitutes the firms foundation of the entire edifice of the research

work. Even then the need for a well thought out research design at times not realized by

many . The importance this problem deserve is not given to it. As a result many researches

do not serve the purpose for which the are undertaken. In fact they they even give misleading

conclusions. Thoughtless in designing the result project may result in rendring the research

exercise futile. It is therefore , imperative that an efficient and appropriate design must be

prepared before starting the research operations. The design helps the researcher to organize his

Page 60: ANISH

ideas in a form whereby it will be possible for him to look for flaws and inadequacies.

Such a design can even be given to others for their comments and critical evaluation. In the

absence of such a course of action, it will be difficult for the critic to provide a comprehensive

review of the proposed study.

A research design for a research problem , usually involves the considerations of the following

Factors :

1) The means of obtaining information .

2) The availability and skills of the researcher.

3) The objective of the problem is to be studied.

4) The nature of the problem to be studied

5) The availability of time and money for the research work.

Important concept relating to research design

Before describing the designs , it will be important to explain the various concepts relating to

research design so that these may be easily understood.

1) Dependent and independent variable.

2) Extraneous variable

3) Control

4) Confound relationship

5) Research hypothesis

Page 61: ANISH

6) Experimental and non- experimental hypothesis testing research

7) Experimental and control group

8) Treatments

9) Experiment

Different research designs can conveniently described if we categorize them as :

1) Research design in case of exploratory research studies.

2) Research design in case of descriptive and diagnostic research studies.

3) Research design in case of hypothesis – testing research studies.

Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It may be

understood as a science of studying how research is done scientifically. In it we study the

various steps that are adopted by a researcher in studying his research problem along

with the logic behind them. It is necessary for the researcher to not only know the research

methods and techniques but also to know the research methodologies.

The study of research methodology gives student the necessary training in gathering the

material and arranging them , participation in the field work when required, and also training

in techniques for the collection of the appropriate data to particular problems, in use of

statistics, questionnaires and controlled experimentations and in recording evidence, sorting it

out and interpreting it. In fact, importance of knowing the methodology of research or how

1} The importance of knowing the research methodology and research techniques is obvious

SWOT ANALYSIS

A SWOT, which stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, analysis for

employees entails a self-evaluation of a person's strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the

employee must evaluate her opportunities and threats. The employee's strengths and

weaknesses are essentially internal factors. Opportunities and threats are considered external

factors, for which the employee has less control. However, A SWOT analysis for an

employee can help an employee better deal with certain external factors.

STRENGTH:

• I have very good communication skills

• My will provides me depth of understanding for the work I do

• Most important needs of my organization I meet i.e creating customers
