Facts from Bluffton Elementary School, South Carolina

EDUCATIONAL FOCUS

15Confidential© Toon Boom Animation Inc.

The animation lab started in November 2010, using Flip Boom. This lab is very unique as it is the only true curriculum-focused lab in South Carolina.

Process:• The teachers select a standard that they would like the students to

focus on during animation. (For example, the Boston Tea Party.)

• The students create a storyboard for this standard and receive all curriculum instruction on the standard in the regular classroom.

• Once they have completed the basic instruction, the teacher signs the class up for the animation lab. The students bring their storyboards to the animation lab and create an animation of the standard.

Results:The impact of the animation lab has been amazing. • Struggling writers are understanding how to utilize more details.• English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)/special education

students are finding an outlet to express what they truly know.

“As we say at Bluffton Elementary School, we don’t teach animation but curriculum through

animation.”

“In their own words . . . “ “Students are able to

demonstrate understanding in all content areas, such as animating Math facts, Science life cycles, Historical events, vocabulary, and Story Writing.

Through animation, students are able to demonstrate their understanding by the use of a visual illustration, as opposed to traditional paper and pencil activities.”

Christine Brown, Principal, Bluffton Elementary School, Beaufort, SC

“This new generation of students consists of creative digital learners who enjoy using technology. A tool like Flip Boom or Studio enables teachers to reach out to students while meeting the criteria of the fifth level of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, the synthesis.

Using such a tool, students can apply their acquired knowledge in order to create a new object. I think such a production tool can help us motivate and engage students.”
