Spiders are arthropods that have eight legs.Spiders are in the arachnid class, but not all arachnids are spiders. There are about 40,000 known species of spiders. Most spiders use a web to catch their prey, which is usually insects. The largest spider is the Goliath tarantula, and they can catch birds.

Cheetahs are part of the big cat family and while they can't climb trees, they can run faster than any other land animal. The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world. They can reach a top speed of around 80 miles per hour.

Penguins are flightless birds. While other birds have wings for flying, penguins have adapted flippers to help them swim in the water. Most penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. The Galapagos Penguin is the only penguin specie that ventures north of the equator in the wild.

Class: : : Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes)External observation: “Great White Shark” Internal anatomy: “Great White Shark – Anatomy

The great white shark, also known as the great white, white shark or "white pointer“ and is a species of large mackerel shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans.

Length: Female: 15 – 21 ft. (Adult), Male: 11 – 13 ft. (Adult)Mass: 1,200 – 2,400 lbs (Adult) Scientific name: Carcharodon Carcharias Conservation status: Vulnerable Speed: 35 mph (Maximum, In Short Bursts) Eats: Earless seal, Sea otter

Only 3,500 Great Whites Now Left in the Wild - a recent survey completed as a part of the Census for Marine Life, has found that there are only some 3,500 individual Great Whites left in the wild--around the same number of tigers that conservationists believe are leftAs large and powerful predators, great white sharks play an important role at the top of the marine food chain. Despite its fame and reputation, little is known about this shark’s biology and behavior.

Here are some cool facts:Early fossil records show that Great White Sharks have been swimming in Earth’s oceans for around 16 million years, though scientists believe they may be much older.Scientists previously thought the life expectancy of a Great White Shark was around 25 years, but a recent study shows that their life expectancy is actually around 70 years.Great White Sharks weigh an average of 1,500-2,400 pounds at maturity, about one ton - heaviest Great White ever recorded in the wild weighed in at a whopping 7,328 pounds. In a single year, Great White Sharks eat average of 11 tons of food. Once they have fed, Great White Sharks can go a whole three months without having to eat another meal. They do not have eyelids, instead their eyes roll back into their heads to protect them from damage when attacking prey.A Great White Shark has a bite force of 4,000 psi, that is 10 times the bite force of a lion.Great White Sharks tend to hunt first thing in the morning, within the first two hours of sunrise when visibility is low.Great whites prefer warm, salty water, typically residing in Australia, South Africa, California and the northeastern United States. The great white shark's tongue is absolutely worthless. Called the basihyal, the tough piece of cartilage sits on the floor of the shark's mouth, and usually doesn't move. When the Shark Pup is born, it is 4 to 5 feet long and completely able to take care of itself. It will immediately swim away from its mother and hunt for small marine animals.

Two species are found in America, the gray wolf, with its various subspecies, and the red wolf. Historically, gray wolves were found throughout most of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with red wolves primarily inhabiting the southeastern United States.

Naturally-occurring, wild gray wolf populations are found currently in the Great Lakes states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and also in northwestern Montana and Northern Idaho. Reintroduced experimental populations occur in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Arizona.

Gray wolves are found in forests, brushlands, or grasslands where suitable cover and denning sites are available. Gray wolves were once found throughout North America. Historically, gray wolves were found over the western 2/3 of the state. Today, none remain in Texas.

Texas is wolf country! At one time, there were two species of wolves in Texas: the southeastern red wolf (Canis rufus) and the once more widespread gray wolf (Canis lupus). The favorite among southwest conservationists is a subspecies of the gray wolf called the Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi)

Gray wolves are social creatures that live in packs, with each member

responsible for helping with the care and upbringing of their young. The pack includes one dominant male and female, their previous year’s offspring and several adult wolves that may or may not be related to the alpha breeding pair. Packs, as in many families, will gather their resources to help raise new pups.

Whelping LittersA female is ready to begin breeding when she is 2 years old. She must dig out a nest in the back of her den to prepare for the birth of her pups. The female will occasionally choose an established structure, such as an abandoned beaver lodge, an open log or a cave to deliver and rear her litter. The alpha female in the pack will whelp an average of 6-10 pups per litter each spring. Blind and deaf, the pups are completely helpless at birth. The female will stay with the pups for the first few weeks to care for them.Growing UpThe mother will continue to bring her pups to rendezvous sites until they are regularly hunting with the adults. By the time the pups are 5-6 months old they roam about 2-3 miles away from the sites. They gradually stop using the rendezvous site and begin following the adults in the pack. The pups require very little care at this point. Many pups will leave the pack to find their own territory by age 2.

Do animals have perception?Evidence suggests that distinct species do indeed

experience passing time on different scales. A recent study in Animal Behavior reveals that body mass and metabolic

rate determine how animals of different species perceive time. These animals tend to be lighter

and have faster metabolisms.

Birds can see many more colors than us because they have four types of

cone cells, known as photoreceptors, in their eyes rather than our three.

Birds can see UV light, which enhances the contrast of some feather patterns, such as the ‘eye’ markings on a peacock’s tail.

In contrast, many mammals have only two types of cones, creating a similar

color perception to humans with red-green color blindness. A dog’s

“dichromatic” view of the world is shown in this image of an owner’s legs.

“Animals like dogs rely on olfaction so much that their vision isn’t as

developed.

Unlike birds and insects, mammals mostly rely on color to blend into their surroundings rather than for complex communication cues. The colorful, iridescent bodies of many insects are known to reveal more to

their kin than to our eyes.

3. TaxonomyThe animal kingdom is an important part of the global ecology. Each species serves a purpose in the balance of the natural world. However, things like massive population growth, commercial development, the exploitation of natural resources, and even global warming have

threatened the survival of our animal neighbors.
