How do we classify animals according to their physical characteristics?
What we will cover today: Animal characteristics How they survive in their environment Mammals Birds Amphibians
Mammals:
Have a backbone Usually furry Have 4 legs Give birth to live young- nurse Usually look like parents- reproduce Example: cats and dogs
Mammals: How do they survive in their environment? Camouflage: color or shape that makes
an animal hard to see Mammals blend in with their
environment They adapt to their environment
Birds: Have bills, beaks, and feathers Have a backbone Have 2 legs Lay eggs Have wings Example: parrots, penguins, ostrich
Birds: How do they survive in their environment? Many birds are adapted to fly Feathers on the wings are protection Penguins do not fly, but swim! Wings can help migrate and camouflage
Amphibians:
Have backbone Have 4 legs or no legs Live in land and water Moist, slimy skin and no scales Lay eggs in water Breathe with gills and lungs Example: salamanders, frogs, toads
Amphibians: How do they survive in their environment?
Wet skin assists frogs in water Toads have rough hard covering to dig deep and avoid the heat! Tree frogs scare with their eyes
Let’s Review! Mammals- usually furry, four legs
Hide by camouflage Birds- feathery wings, lay eggs
Migrate, fly, swim Amphibians- live in land and water
Slimy or rough skin
