Since she could not stop because she had an infant in her car, she decided to post an emergency announcement on the Boston site of Craig’s List under pets. She hoped someone would read about the cat and would save it. A second woman saw the announcement called us. We sent a team of four volunteers looking for the cat but could not find it. We called a number of rescuers to see if they could monitor the area. The following day a woman brought us the cat. He belonged to a woman whose son, under the influence of a substance, had attacked her with hot water. Somehow, the cat got out of her house but neighbors rescued him from the sidewalk and kept him in the laundry room. The woman was evicted and is at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Center. The landlord did not want the cat. Neighbors heard we would take him and he was brought to the shelter by a kind hearted woman who had just returned from the hospital from recent surgery. Craig is still traumatized by his terrible experience but safe. Only thanks to the kindness of several animal lovers working as a team, this poor cat is alive. THANK YOU ALL!!! Domino’s owner is homeless due to a bad turn of events in her life. He had been living in her car from December through March when we took him. She would turn the car on every two hours to keep him warm. He is gradually adjusting to his new life at the shelter and we will find him a special home. We sincerely hope that his owner will find her own place and a new life soon as well. Gaby was left in a Lynn apartment to die. A person cleaning the apartment found her and notified the real estate agent. The agent contacted the ex owner but she coldly and without emotion stated she did not want her any more. We do not know how long this sweet and gentle cat was left alone in the apartment. Luckily for her, the agent contacted us and we took her in. After several months at the shelter, Gaby has finally found a wonderful loving home in Arlington. Valentino was someone’s cat and had been abandoned. He was very lucky because a very kind Revere woman was feeding him and two other stray cats. They even built a nice house for them to keep them warm! One day she noticed he was limping badly. We took him to the Natick Animal Clinic where he was treated. They found that a very sharp object had lacerated his front paw extensively. He is now much better and the woman who was feeding him decided to adopt him. Thank you Margherita and God Bless you and your family! Annamarie Taylor Craig Domino Valentino

My fiance and I have been renovating our home for the last fewmonths and needed to go to the town “dump” to get rid of some of therenovation debris. We were in our truck at the entrance to the dumpwhen I noticed a little kitty in the adjacent woods. My initial reactionwas “oh, how cute!” Then another cat popped up in the woods. Andanother. And another! When we were speaking to the woman whoworked at the dump, we mentioned seeing the cats and she told usthere were actually seven cats in total (some were kittens), and howthey were abandoned and now homeless. She mentioned that therewas a kind woman who lived nearby who was feeding the cats everyday, but that they were unable to adopt them for various reasons of their own.

Being animal lovers (with three cats and a dog at home), my fiance and I were both beside ourselves, and I wasliterally in tears. We were not able to take the cats in ourselves, so we decided to find a place that could.Countless emails and phone calls later, all with responses along the lines of “sorry, there’s no room,” AnimalUmbrella said they could help! Hurrah!

So then came the hard part of trying to catch the kitties. In my naivete I thought I could shake a can of cattreats and they would all come running to my side. No such luck (andno big surprise, especially to my fiance who thought the plan washilarious and yet allowed me to try anyways). We finally were successfulusing Have-a-Heart traps. It took quite a few trips back and forth to thewoods to set and check the traps, and we had to turn our basement intoa temporary holding room for semi-feral kitties for a couple weeks, butin the end everything worked out.

Now every time this winter we look out the window and see itsnowing, we are thankful we came across these kitties-in-need andeven more thankful that Animal Umbrella was there to answer ourcall for help.

The Blackstone Cats Rescue Story -- By Samantha Weiner

EDITORIAL NOTE – Thanks to the commitment and compassion of SamanthaWeiner, her finance and the people who were feeding these poor cats and kittens, they are safe and alive today in our shelter. We are working on them to makethem less scared and hope to make most of them social to be adopted some day.

Most people will not take on the responsibility of rescuing an animal as they feel it is not theirproblem but indeed it is our responsibility to do something to help animals in great stress and need.To have compassion is important as ever! The challenge of trapping from the woods seven veryscared cats and kittens one by one and to bring them from Blackstone to the Natick Animal Clinicfor treatment was great but Samantha did it! These poor animals had nowhere to go as theBlackstone animal shelter has now been closed for several months and homeless animals in thearea are left to fend for themselves especially in the bitter winter cold.

This rescue story is a great example for others to follow and we hope theywill and save a few lives! Thank you very much Samantha!

Candy & MittensCandy was brought to our shelter in a basket along with her fiveone day old kittens. We noticed they were not nursing andthought something was wrong. Linda, one of our volunteersdecided to foster the family. Candy was very dehydrated and hadno milk and for several weeks Linda had to feed her kittensseveral times a day until they managed to eat on their own. Thewhole family is now healthy and very happy. Thank you, Linda!Mittens was surrendered by a woman who could not keep her anylonger. She is very sweet and lives withCandy with a great Arlington family.

Cotton Ball & Healey

Cotton Ball & HealeyCotton Ball is deaf and was wandering in the streets. No one knows how he survivedwith such a terrible handicap. Thanks to the rescue efforts of MassPaws, he was broughtto our shelter.Healey, was a stray we had kept in a foster home but was shy and when she wasreturned to the shelter she was unhappy because of her shyness with so many other cats. Both Cotton Ball and Healey now live very happily in a wonderful Watertown home.

They were adopted by a long time Animal Umbrellasupporter Ann Louise who was touched by Cotton Ball’splight in the streets. What wonderful news! Thank you!

Snow WhiteWe found Snow White and her three kittens crammed in a small carrieroutside the shelter. We wonder how long they were there. They were luckywe found them alive.

The family has now grown up and Snow White has founda great home of her own. We plan to adopt the kittens ina month or two once they have grown bigger. Thank you! Snow White

HAPPY ENDINGS♥♥SunshineAn East Boston woman was feeding a beautiful orangeand white stray. One day, during a week of torrentialrain, Sunshine was trying to get into her house. He wasdrenched and cold so she let him in and dried himwith a towel. Unfortunately she was going away at theend of the week and tried to get a shelter to take him,but nobody responded. She was resigned to release himback in the streets but we decided to take him andbring him back to good health. Sunshine has now been adopted by a wonderful family and does not need toworry about getting wet and cold again. Thank you!

A Lynn woman who was going to be evicted called us andtold us she had been frantically looking for a place for herbeloved 13 year old cat DC but no one answered her calls. We decided to take the cat but asked her to bring him to theNorth Shore Animal Hospital the day of her eviction so thathe could be examined by a vet. Once treated, he was going tobe taken to our shelter. Fortunately, we had received a callfrom an Animal Umbrella supporter and her husband whohad recently lost their beloved old pet. They wanted to adoptan older animal from us. We asked if they would consideradopting DC. They went to visit him at the North ShoreAnimal Hospital and fell in love with him and decided toadopt him once he was examined by a vet and was neutered, tested and vaccinated. DC is a veryhealthy and young acting cat who wants to live. Thank you very much Kathy Linquistfor opening your Revere home to this very fortunate cat!

MORE RECENT RESCUE STORIES

Angelica, Carlo and GraceAngelica, Carlo and Grace have nothing in common except all three wereabandoned by their owners a long time ago.

Angelica’s owners moved to California and left her behind. Most people in thearea did not feed her. When she was rescued she was like a skeleton and verytraumatized. She is now gaining weight and has little confidence in people. Shewill soon be adoptable.

Carlo was a Revere stray and a kind woman was feeding him but one day heappeared to be wounded so he was trapped and brought to the vet. He is now atour shelter on rabies quarantine isolated from other cats. He will soon be out ofquarantine and be adoptable.

Angelica

Grace was irregularly fed by a well meaning person with a lot ofpersonal problems. She had a severe skin infection caused by a fleainfestation, had many scratches and was bald in many parts of herbody. She was very thin an dehydrated. She was trapped andbrought to the vet where she was treated. Grace’s coat is now full ofshining hair. She looks happy and has put on some pounds and soonwe will look for a new home for her!

We would like to thank the volunteers ofMassPaws for going to trap these three cats for usand to bring them to safety in our shelter. Thankyou very much. Your work made a difference intheir lives!
