Animal Kingdom –With Young Kids– Half Day

This easyPlan is designed for families with young children who plan to spend five or six hours in Animal Kingdom, from 9am to 2:30pm or thereabouts. It skips Animal Kingdom’s three most intense attractions – Expedition Everest (44” minimum height), DINOSAUR (40” minimum height), and Primeval Whirl (48” minimum height). It does visit Kali River Rapids (38” minimum height), but this is a gentle flume ride. If you prefer not to get wet or the kids aren’t tall enough to ride, simply skip it. If members of your group are interested in these attractions, see the Family Hybrid easyPlan or simply have those that plan to visit the thrills rides do so in the morning during Festival of the Lion King or with FASTPASS throughout the day when other attractions aren’t of interest. The “Skipped Attractions” section at the end of the easyPlan offers more advice on fitting these and other attractions into the day. Variable Show Times and Deviation From the Plan

More so than Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom’s shows run on a variable schedule with different show times throughout the year. For example, the late morning Finding Nemo the Musical may begin at 11:30am or 11:45am. An afternoon Flights of Wonder show could begin at 1:00pm or 1:30pm. We have a bit of variability in the morning with the Festival of the Lion King show that may begin at 10am or 10:30am. If it begins at 10am, we’ll head straight there after Kilimanjaro Safaris to see it and then visit characters afterward. If it begins at 10:30am, we’ll have time to visit the characters before the show begins. Verify show times with this week’s Times Guide.

Kali River Rapids in Winter and Summer

Kali River Rapids, Animal Kingdom’s principal flume ride, has wait times that fluctuate enormously based on weather. When it’s hot, FASTPASSes may run out before Expedition Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris and standby waits may be longer than either headliner. This is due to a lower capacity and slower loading/unloading times. If you’re visiting in summer, you’ll want to collect FASTPASSes for it as early as possible and ideally before 11am. Keep in mind that you will likely get soaking wet without a poncho or other protection. In winter, Kali River Rapids has much shorter waits because fewer people want to get wet. You may want to skip the attraction altogether if the temperature is below 70 degrees or you don’t want to get wet.

Arrival: Arrive at Animal Kingdom’s turnstiles at least 15 minutes prior to opening. A brief preshow should begin about ten minutes prior to Park opening and then you will be let into the Park to line up for the ride of your choice.

1. Head straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris to ride in the standby line. Most of the people in line will be headed in the same direction. Continue up to the Tree of Life, where there will be one path to the left and one path to the right. Take the left path up into Africa. As you’re walking,

look to your left for Pizzafari and the walkway to Camp Minnie-Mickey – we’re headed back here in Step 3. Kilimanjaro Safaris is located in the back of Africa. If you’d like to ride a second time later in the day, collect FASTPASSes for it prior to riding and put off collecting Kali River Rapids FASTPASSes until after Festival of the Lion King.

2. If you plan to ride Kali River Rapids later in the day, collect FASTPASSes for it now. The easiest way to do this is to have one person collect everyone’s tickets (this person is known as the FASTPASS runner). The FASTPASS runner walks to Kali River Rapids and inserts each ticket into the FASTPASS machine to obtain the FASTPASSes for each group member. This cuts down on the walking everyone has to do because Kali River Rapids is a good distance from Africa. Alternatively, everyone can use their own ticket to collect their own FASTPASS. To get to Kali River Rapids, walk along the path that connects Africa with Asia. You’ll see it to the left as you exit Africa and before you cross the bridge over to Discovery Island. Continue walking until you see Yak & Yeti Restaurant and Yak & Yeti Quick Service. Kali River Rapids is located down a path on your left, right after you pass Yak & Yeti Quick Service’s seating area. The FASTPASS machines are directly in front of you.

3. The rest of the group should head back the way they came through Africa and back across the bridge to Discovery Island. Look to your right for Pizzafari Quick Service. The path to Camp Minnie-Mickey is located on the right, just past it. We want to head to the first Festival of the Lion King show, which may begin at 10:00am or 10:30am. If it begins at 10:00am, we won’t have a lot of time for the Meet and Greets until after the show. If it begins at 10:30am, we should have about 30 minutes to meet the characters. Visit whichever characters you miss after the show. The Camp Minnie-Mickey characters may not begin appearing until 10am. If this is the case, visit the characters in Africa along the path that connects Africa with Asia if you have extra time before 10am.

4. See the first Festival of the Lion King show, which should begin at 10am or 10:30am. The theater is located in the back of Camp Minnie-Mickey.

5. We’re headed over to DinoLand USA to ride TriceraTop Spin. Exit Camp Minnie-Mickey and take a right through Discovery Island and around the Tree of Life. You’ll see the bridge to DinoLand USA across from the entrance to It’s Tough To Be A Bug and on the same path as Flame Tree Barbecue. Cross this bridge into DinoLand USA. TriceraTop Spin is located in the middle of DinoLand USA, near Primeval Whirl. Ride multiple times if the line is short and you have interest.

6. We’ll want to arrive 15 minutes early for the Finding Nemo the Musical show in Step 7. Finding Nemo should begin at 11:30am or 11:45am and you may or may not have time for the Boneyard Playground now. If you don’t, return at your leisure later in the afternoon. There won’t be a wait, but it’s hot when temperatures are high. The Boneyard is a themed playground

area geared towards kids. It’s located near the bride that connects DinoLand and Discovery Island. Let the kids burn off some steam until it’s time to head over to Finding Nemo.

7. See Finding Nemo the Musical. The theater is located on the path that connects DinoLand USA and Asia. Arrive at least 15 minutes early unless Animal Kingdom isn’t at all busy, in which case you can arrive closer to the start of the show.

8. It’s time for lunch. As written, we’re headed to Flame Tree Barbecue, which serves some of the best barbecue in Disney World. You’re also free to visit one of the other quick services if you so choose. Restaurantosaurus has plenty of indoor seating and offers a lot of your standard Disney burger/nugget/salad fare. Pizzafari also offers a lot of air-conditioned seating and serves Disney pizza, salad, and a Hot Italian Sandwich. Yak & Yeti Quick Service, also known as Anandupar Local Food Cafes, serves Asian-inspired dishes, salads, and sandwiches.

9. See It’s Tough to be a Bug. The theater is located inside the Tree of Life and the entrance to the attraction is in Discovery Island, right across from Flame Tree Barbecue and the pathway into/out of DinoLand USA.

10. Walk the Maharajah Jungle Trek. The entrance is located past the Kali River Rapids FASTPASS machines. To get there, walk around the Tree of Life in Discovery Island up toward Asia. You’ll see Yak & Yeti Restaurant and Quick Service in front of you. Take a right at the end of the path and then a left past the seating area for Yak & Yeti Quick Service. You’ll see Kali River Rapids in front of you and Maharajah Jungle Trek is behind the FASTPASS machines on the left side. Most visitors spend about 20 minutes here, but you’re welcome to spend more or less time as you see fit.

11. Ride Kali River Rapids with the FASTPASSes collected earlier in the day. The FASTPASS return line is right next to the standby line, which is directly to the right of the FASTPASS machines.

12. It should be around 2pm, which means our day is over, as written. We’ve hit Animal Kingdom’s highlights, though you’re obviously free to extend your day if you’d like by visiting additional rides or shows. 13. Exit Animal Kingdom.

Skipped Attractions and How to Fit Them In

DINOSAUR – Overall, this is probably the scariest ride at Disney World. If members of your group want to ride, do so before 10:30am or with FASTPASS. FASTPASSes are plentiful and the return time is almost always 40 minutes in the future, unless Animal Kingdom is slammed. When crowds are low, DINOSAUR generally has waits of 20 minutes or less.

Expedition Everest – If members of your group would like to ride Expedition Everest, you’ll want to do so before 10am or with FASTPASS. It should be your second FASTPASS priority, behind Kilimanjaro Safaris. With FASTPASS, the total wait/ride time should be under ten minutes, so it’s a quick attraction that can be accomplished while the rest of the group grabs a snack, uses the restroom, or takes a short break.

Flights of Wonder – This show is generally scheduled five times throughout the morning and early afternoon. If you do want to see it, you’ll need to substitute it for other attractions or tack it on to the end of the day. There’s usually a show around 3pm.

Pangani Forest Exploration Trail – With limited time in Animal Kingdom, most people will prefer to visit the major shows and attractions over this type of zoological exhibit. If you’d prefer to visit Pangani, substituting it for one of the two stage shows would be the easiest way if you don’t want to tack it onto the end of your day.

Primeval Whirl – While not particularly scary, Primeval Whirl does have a 48” minimum height. If members of your group would like to ride, do so before 10:30am or with FASTPASS.

Rafiki’s Planet Watch – It takes 15-20 minutes just to get to and from Rafiki’s Planet Watch via the Wildlife Express Train, plus the amount of time you spend there. If you do want to visit and don’t want to extend your day, you’ll need to remove about 60 minutes worth of shows/attractions from the easyPlan. The easiest way to do this would be to skip one of the major stage shows, the Maharajah Jungle Trek, and It’s Tough To Be A Bug. You might prefer to axe Kali River Rapids or one of the other attractions instead.
