agricultural operation and transport of agricultural products to the nearby markets in
some cases. A large number of rural women folk find good opportunities to work in

SAMPLE SURVEY
Introduction
The integrated Sample Survey Scheme was started in Haryana State during the year
1977-78 for the first time and since then it is being continued systematically, regularly and
the seasonal as well as annual estimates of production and average yield etc. are worked
out for milk, eggs, wool and meat every year. The timely reliable estimates of major livestock
products such as milk, eggs, wool and meat are most essential both at the central and state
level to assess the progress made by the department on the basis of activities undertaken
year to year.
Object of the Survey
The main objects of the survey are:-
1. To estimate the production of major livestock products such as milk, eggs, wool &
Meat.
2. To estimate the number of animals and layers during the inter census period.
3. To work out the average milk yield per day of an in milk cow, buffalo and goat and per
day yield of eggs and meat.
4. To study the various attendant and management practices adopted by people in
respect of livestock rearing and poultry farming.
Coverage
The sample survey covered all the 21 districts of the State.
Period of Survey
The survey covered the period from 1st March to 28th/29th February every year. Being
variation in the production of livestock products from season to season, the field work is
carried out in three seasons as per details given below:
Season Months
Summer March to June (4 months)
Rainy July to October (4 months)
Winter November to February (4 months)
17
Sample Plan
A stratified multistage random sampling design is adopted for the survey. The district
forms the stratum. The primary sampling unit is the village/urban ward. The household
having in-milk bovines/goats/poultry layers is the second stage unit and the animal/bird in
the household is the third stage unit of sampling.
From 1984-85 onward, an enlarged sample size is selected for listing suggested by
Govt. of India/IASRI. 15% of the total village/urban wards in the state are selected for listing
in a year. These sample unit in the state are allocated to various districts in proportion to the
total livestock population as per livestock census. 1/3rd of these village are covered during
each season for listing.
Detailed survey for the estimation of district wise estimates, full time Progress
Assistants are posted for field work at the rate of 5 villages per Progress Assistant per
district for detailed study in each season.
Selection Size
(a) The Following pattern was adopted for the selection of households:
1. First Round
1. Milk : Two cluster of two households in each village (bovines)
one cluster of five households in each village (goats)
2. Eggs: Two cluster of five households in each village.
3. Wool: Sample of Five household (flocks) once in a season.
4. Meat: One registered slaughter house.
2. Second and Subsequent Rounds :
1. Milk : Four cluster of two households in each village (bovines)
one cluster of 5 households in each village (goats)
2. Eggs: Four cluster of 5 households in each village.
3. Meat: One registered slaughter house.
18
b. The following pattern was adopted for selection of animals in each village:-
1. Milk : Two animals in milk at random.
2. Eggs: All laying birds.
3. Wool: Two Rams, two weathers, two ewes & two lambs at random.
4. Meat: Three animals of each Species (Goat, sheep & Pigs) slaughtered on the day of
visit in the registered slaughter house.
The Survey is consisting of two parts i.e. (i) complete enumeration and (ii) detailed
study. The complete enumeration deals with the work of counting the livestock and poultry
birds for the estimation of numbers of animals in milk/milch animals etc. Besides survey
staff, this work is also entrusted to the veterinary staff for a period of 2—3 days, in addition
to their own duties. The complete enumeration is done only in the first month of each
season.
As regards detailed study, the department has appointed Progress Assistants on full
time basis to carry out the sample survey work in the selected villages. The detailed survey
is done continuously during all the three seasons of the year i.e. 12 months. Detailed study
provided the results of estimated average yield and attendant practices.

and the final tables are available. The 2007 Census has been conducted by Directorate
of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Haryana. The results of Integrated Sample Survey
have been estimated on the basis of 2007 Livestock Census figures.
As this report is based on 2007 livestock census and the difference
between the livestock census 2002 and 2007 of Haryana is also included here in
Annexure I, which covers percentage increase and decrease over the previous
livestock census.
The survey gives estimates of population as well as productivity in respect
of cross-bred cows, indigenous cows, buffaloes and goats. The population of desi and
improved poultry is estimated along with their egg production per day. Likewise sheep
population along with their wool production is estimated. These estimates are also
available at district level. The season wise average quantity of feed/ fodder fed per
animal per day is also given and the information about season wise poultry practices
followed by sample household is also given in this survey.
