• THE NIGERIA SOCIAL INSURANCE TRUST FUND IS THE GOVERNMENT AGENCY ESTABLISHED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT VIA NSITF ACT(1993).

• NSITF IS SADDLED WITH THE SOLE MANDATE OF IMPLEMENTING THE EMPLOYEES’ COMPENSATION ACT (ECA) 2010

• THE ECA (2010) IS THE LAW THAT ESTABLISHES A SOCIAL INSURANCESCHEME DESIGNED TO PROVIDE COMPENSATION TO EMPLOYEES WHOSUFFER FROM OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES, SUSTAIN INJURIES OR DISABILITYFROM ACCIDENT AT WORK PLACE OR IN THE COURSE OF EMPLOYMENT,WHETHER AT USUAL PLACE OF WORK OR OUTSIDE OF IT.

TYPES OF CLAIMS AND MAJOR DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

• HEALTH CARE Approved Healthcare provider Accredited NSITF specialist for replacement or purchase of new appliances

• DISABILITY Total/Permanent Disability Partial/Permanent Disability

• DEATH Death certificate Confirmed dependant(s) Letter of Administration is required for dependants that are not members of the nuclear family

• INJURY

Police report in a case of motor/road accident or major factory accident

• MENTAL STRESS Diagnostic report of the stress

• OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES Attestation of origin of disease.

• ENEMY WARLIKE ACTIONS OR COUNTER ACTIONS Verifiable report of violence of crisis

CONDITIONS FOR FILING FOR CLAIMS

• THE CLAIMANT MUST BE AN EMPLOYEE OF AN EMPLOYER DULY REGISTERED UNDER THE ECS

• THERE MUST BE AN ACCIDENT OR DISEASE OR DEATH THAT IS RESULTED FROM INJURY IN THE WORKPLACE OR RELATED TO THE EMPLOYMENT

• A REPORT MUST BE MADE VIA APPROPRIATE ECS FORMS FOR THE ACCIDENT OR DISEASE OR DEATH FROM THE EMPLOYER OR EMPLOYEE TO THE NEAREST NSITF OFFICE WITHIN 21DAYS

• AN EMPLOYER WHO MAKES A CLAIM MUST HAVE PROVIDED SCHEDULEOF RENUMERATION IN LINE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT

FILING FOR CLAIMS

• THE EMPLOYEE SHOULD REPORT TO THE EMPLOYER ANY INCIDENT, ACCIDENT, INJURY OR DISEASES THAT OCCURS IN THE WORKPLACE WITHIN 14 DAYS OF OCCURRENCE

• THE EMPLOYER MUST REPORT ANY ACCIDENT, OR ALLEGED OCCUPATIONAL DISEASE, OR DEATH IN THE WORK PLACE WITH A WRITTEN NOTIFICATION AND COMPLETE FORM ECS.CCF01 TO THE NEAREST NSITF OFFICE WITHIN 21 DAYS OF OCCURRENCE

• EMPLOYER MUST SUBMIT DULY COMPLETED FORMS ECS.CC01, ECS.CC02, ECS.CC03, ECS.MR01 AND ATTACH REQUIRED DOCUMENTS TO THE NEAREST NSITF OFFICE,ON BEHALF OF AN INJURED, SICK OR DECEASED EMPLOYEE.

• IN CASE OF DEATH, THE EMPLOYER SHOULD CONTACT THE DEPENDANT(S) REGISTERED WITH THEM TO COMPLETE THE NECESSARY FORMS MENTIONED ABOVE

HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK: ESTABLISHING A HEALTH AND SAFETY SYSTEM THAT WORKS

• ESTABLISH A HEALTH AND SAFETY SYSTEM COMPLIANT WITH INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

• ASSESS THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF RISKS TO HEALTH FROM WORK WITH ALL HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES CARRIED OUT BY A COMPETENT PERSON

• MEASURES OF CONTROL SHOULD BE IN PLACE FOR EXPOSURE TO SUCH SUBSTANCES I.E ENGINEERING CONTROL MEASURES

• USE OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED (Note: PPE should not be solely relied upon as a primary control measure and should be provided when it is not reasonably practicable to rely on engineering or other control measures)

• HEALTH SURVEILLANCE SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE HEALTH OF EMPLOYEES WHERE NECESSARY (i.e. workers exposed to substances hazardous to health)

• EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE AWARE AND TRAINED ON THE RISKS, CONTROL MEASURES AND THE REASONS FOR THESE AND WHY IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THEY USE THE CONTROL MEASURES PUT IN PLACE

HAZARDS RELATED TO THIS JOB

• PHYSICAL HAZARDS

• Exposure to high noise levels particularly in confinement systems

• Heat exhaustion, heat-induced dermatosis, sun-induced dermatosis

ACCIDENT HAZARDS

• Sprains and strains from slips, trips and falls when carrying heavy loads e.g. feeds

• Eye and skin irritation from contamination of broken skin or from splashing of irritants, allergens, other hazardous fluids.

• Burns from exposures to hot surfaces (e.g. incubators, debeaking tools)

CHEMICAL HAZARDS• Acute and chronic respiratory irritation

and disease from exposure to agricultural dusts. Agricultural dusts are primarily organic (feathers, dander, microorganisms etc.), but inorganic dusts, like crystalline silica, are also found in confinement house dusts

• Immunologically mediated diseases (atopic asthma) and hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. extrinsic allergic alveolitis/ hypersensitivity pneumonitis) from exposure to dusts

• Acute and chronic dermal, ocular and respiratory diseases from exposure to several toxic and asphyxiating gases common especially in confinement system

• Exposure to disinfectants, detergents, formaldehyde, ammonia solutions, sodium carbonate and sodium hypochlorite.

• Formaldehyde, a suspect carcinogen, is often used as a disinfectant in hatcheries and brooder houses

BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS

• Zoonotic diseases and infections naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man are common. These include infective agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi

ERGONOMIC, PSYCHOSOCIAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL FACTORS

• Back pains and other musculoskeletal problems resulting from overexertion and wrong postures during lifting and moving of animals and feed bags, shovelling of wastes, etc.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES• Wear safety shoes with non-skid soles

• Wear appropriate eye protection; consult a safety supervisor or a supplier

• Protect hands with chemical – resistant gloves; if impractical, use a barrier cream

• Install effective exhaust ventilation and air conditioning to prevent air contamination and heat or cold stress

• Wear a respirator to avoid inhalation of dust or aerosols

• Replace formaldehyde as disinfectant with less harmful substitutes available on the market

• Maintain a high level of personal hygiene. At the end of work, shower and change clothes. Do not take work – soiled clothing home

• Learn and use safe lifting and moving techniques for heavy or awkward loads; use mechanical aids to assist in lifting

MONTHLY REMITTANCE PROCESSPROCEDURE FOR REMITA PAYMENT INTO NSITF TREASURY SINGLE ACCOUNT

• Step 1: Log on to www.remita.net

• Step 2: Select Pay a Federal Government Agency

• Step 3: An E-Teller Drop down List appears starting with Name of MDA which is Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, type of service as Employee Compensation Scheme (ECS) and description as “Name of Employer”

• Step 4: Fill in the E-Teller as Appropriate

• Step 5: Key in the Captcha Code shown in the Screenshot

• Step 6: Select Proceed to Payment.

• Step 7: The E-Invoice how do you want to pay appears

• Step 8: Remita Portal then generates the Remita Retrieval Reference Number (RRR)

• Step 9: Print the E-Invoice for payment to be paid through any of the remittance channels e.g any Commercial bank branch near you or through online/internet banking platform

• Step 10: End

• PLS NOTE: The Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) is the number that will be generated each time a remitapayment is to be made. After payment visit our office with the remita receipt of payment and duly filled and signed schedule of payment ECS.RE O4 FORM to be exchanged for official receipt.
