Animal abuse occurs when an animal, domesticated or wild, is harmed physically intentionally or not. The physical abuse, if it doesn’t lead to death, can lead to mental problems in the animal from the trauma it has been subject to. Abuse occurs in every region of the globe. Wherever there are animals, there are cases of abuse, whether they are reported or not. Places with little resources are often more subject to no reported cases, yet more abuse occurs there because they simply cannot take care of the animals. The more often reported cases come from cities where reasons may vary from ignorance to plain cruelty.

Remember, these are reported cases, meaning more are not reported. In order to decrease the number of cases, something must be done.

More and more cases are being reported every year. The graph on the right is new and by the time the year 2007 has ended, the number of cases reported will have increased.

My plan included setting up donation canisters in Clark’s Ice Cream and the Berkley Animal Clinic. The donated money will go to the Royal Oak Animal Shelter.

Steps:1) Finish making calls and get definite answers allowing me to set up canisters and brochures

because I can’t just randomly set them up without permission. This also includes giving out my contact information to managers.

2) Go out to the accepting areas and set up the canisters.

3) Collect canisters and tally money on May 7.

4) Donate money to Royal Oak Animal Shelter on May 14.

My Global Action Plan

My original goal was to raise at least enough money to buy one or two bags of dog food strictly through donations. Another goal was to have at least three pamphlets taken from each donation site. However, the donated money is going to the animal shelter as is and the pamphlet idea never worked out.

My new goal was to collect at least $10 from each site. I over-achieved this goal because people are very generous and must have read the sign on my donation canisters. I also had chosen popular sites. The veterinary clinic is full of animal lovers and Clark’s is a popular place for other high school students who recognized either my name or the Global Action plan information on the sign.

With the combined donation amount between the two sites, $62.95 was donated. With my family’s addition, a total of $100 was donated to the Royal Oak Animal Shelter.

Obstacles:Not all places I tried were willing to put a canister in their business. This is understandable however, because a teenager could easily lie and take the money for his/her self.

Frustrations: One major frustration was the fact that the deadline was moved up. This cut my donation period quite short in order to get my data for my presentation and I believe I could’ve collected more money.

Triumphs:I felt particularly triumphant when I counted the money for the first time. I felt it was a real accomplishment. I also felt very helpful when I turned the money in to the shelter. The lady who accepted the donation was a former student of BHS and she was very appreciative and excited to see just how much money I had collected.
