Education Week – ‘Celebrating Careers’ Commencing Monday 20

th May

There will be lots on next week at Mano, as we celebrate this special week as a learning community.

We hope you can join us! See page 7 for full details of activities available during Education Week at Mano.

2019 is the 75th year of Education Week and it aims to positively profile and celebrate the strengths and achievements of Victoria’s government education sector.

Education Week 2019 is all about celebrating careers and pathways. It is an opportunity for schools, TAFEs and Tech Schools to showcase the work they are doing to support students in their career pathways. Education Week is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate excellence in education through open days, exhibitions and special events. It is a great opportunity for schools to open their doors to the community and showcase the great work they are doing.

Our Assembly on Monday morning will have some special components and Thursday’s Dress Up Day and Whole School Breakfast promises to be memorable.

Tuesday’s Maths session for parents begins at 2:30pm in the Staffroom and will share our numeracy programs and how maths can be supported at home.

NAPLAN Testing Our Grade 3 and 5s have completed this national testing program this week.

Four tests were arranged – Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy.

The tests will be assessed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) staff, with results coming back to schools around mid-Term 3. This will be in the form of individual student reports and also collated whole of school data. Student reports are confidential documents containing personal information about each student and how their results compare to others in Australia. The reports will be passed on to parents as soon as possible after they are delivered to the school from the VCAA. Schools regularly set targets for improving Literacy and Numeracy learning growth for students, with NAPLAN results being aligned to this work (externally assessed work is very useful to be combined with ‘in school’ assessed work, when setting targets for improvement and reflecting upon current practices).

School Council Parent Member Vacancy We presently have a parent member vacancy on School Council. This is due to the resignation of a parent member. The term of office would be until March 2020. The next scheduled School Council meeting is Monday 17th June at 7:30pm in the Staffroom. School Council meets twice per term (so 8 meetings for the calendar year).

For more information please feel free to contact myself via the Office and we would be happy to allow a potential parent to come along to the June meeting and ascertain if they wished to make a longer commitment, after attending this meeting.

Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall Our Multi Purpose Room will be used as a Polling Booth for Saturday’s Federal Election.

In the Multi carpark from 9am to 1pm some wonderful Mano parents will be conducting a BBQ and a Cake Stall and they need your support!

If you are voting at this booth please bring along your purse or wallet and make a purchase – contributions to the Cake Stall can be made on Friday (preferably dropped off to the Canteen between 3:00pm - 4:30pm) or directly to the stall itself on Saturday morning. Thank you to all involved in advance of what I’m sure will be a successful activity.

Canteen News Vicki our Canteen Manageress does a terrific job and is most excited to be providing breakfast for us on Thursday 23rd May (Dress Up Day for Education Week).

Thank you to the large number who have pre-paid and placed their breakfast order, helping Vicki to be very ready for 8am on this day!

A few reminders / notices about canteen operations: * They cannot process orders with foreign coins (yes, they have had quite a few of these lately!). * Credit is not provided for lunch orders but emergency lunches and snacks are available from Jacquie in the Office upon request. * Senior students do gain experience in food handling and serving on Fridays and they are really appreciated on the busiest day of the week. * The very recent CoGG Health Inspector visit has reported most positively on our Canteen and its operations. Well done and thank you Vicki!

How to Build Your Child's Numeracy Skills from Years 3 to 6: General tips Support your child's learning by giving them opportunities to discuss and engage in Maths. Your child will begin to connect the importance of maths with everyday activities. Including navigating public transport, choosing the best item to buy, budgeting, and cooking. Talk positively about Maths so your child also values it. If your experiences in Maths at school were less than ideal, avoid making comments like “I was bad at Maths at school”. Comments like these can lower your child’s expectations of themselves. They can also perpetuate myths about people being good or bad at Maths. If you did well at Maths in school, avoid jumping in with answers or solutions. Encourage your child to talk about how they might work out Maths problems. This helps boost their confidence and deepens their understanding. Maths today is not about learning by repetition. Today, the focus is on recognising that there are many ways to get an answer. Rather, it is important to be able to explain how and why you chose the approach you did. There are many activities you can do at home to help explore maths with your child. When participating in these activities, avoid associating them with speed. Expecting your child to work quickly on maths can cause Maths anxiety. Try to focus on the process and not the outcome.

For further information, go to Connecting online https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/learning/ Pages/numeracy-years-3-to-6.aspx

CompassPay & Qkr!

From the 20th May 2019 we will be replacing payments for camps, excursions and activities previously paid through Qkr! with Compass Pay, to simplify our payment and permission system for events.

Qkr! will now only be used for Essential Student Learning Items, Building Fund Donations and some fundraising events.

The Compass Pay procedures will not only ensure all events can run smoothly, safely and effectively, it will also have the following benefits for both parents and teachers:

No more lost or misplaced notes/permission slips

More efficient communication for parents regarding events

A quick and easy way for parents to consent and pay for an event at anytime from anywhere. Compass Pay is a secure payment portal and will not store any payment information you enter.

When there is an excursion, what will happen? The excursion permission note will be sent home. You will also receive an email with details of the upcoming excursion or “event” if your email address is up-to-date in Compass. You will then have to log into Compass to complete payment and consent. (You do not have to update your details – this information is already within the system.) When you have consented and paid via Compass the permission note does not have to be sent back to school. What type of card can I use? Credit or Debit Mastercard or Visa cards can be used in CompassPay. Will you receive confirmation of payment? YES. You must have a valid registered email address in Compass and you will receive an email confirmation that your payment was processed. What if I can’t remember a transaction that appears on my statement? Transactions will appear on your statement as ‘COMPASSPAY.COM’. If you are unsure what a payment is for:

Log in to Compass and go to the My Payments tab (under Tools menu); OR Go to www.compasspay.com and enter the basic details of the transaction/credit card.

Please contact Jessie or Jacquie at the Office if you have any further questions about CompassPay.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parents are invited to book a ten minute Parent Teacher Interview with their child’s teacher and/or specialist teachers on Wednesday 26th June between 12pm-7pm. This day will be a Pupil Free Day.

Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews will open on Monday 27th May, 4:30pm and close on Friday 21st June, 4pm.

Bookings are unable to be made after Friday 21st June, 4pm. This will ensure teachers have sufficient time to prepare for your child’s interview.

This year all bookings will be made online using our Compass Portal. Compass can be accessed at https://manifold-vic.compass.education or by using the Compass iOS or Android apps. Once you have logged into Compass under ‘My News’, you will see a notification for Parent Teacher Conference with a prompt to ‘Click here for Booking’. Follow the prompts to either ‘Start Booking’ or follow the instructions in ‘Show How to Book’.

Please note Parent Teacher Interviews will only be scheduled on an alternate day or time in exceptional circumstances.

If you require any assistance with booking a Parent Teacher Interview on Compass or would like to make a booking with a specialist teacher please contact Jacquie or Jessie in the Office.

This last week we have been focusing on some OSHC goals. Pushing our chairs in before we leave our seats, hanging our bags on

a hook and remembering to put our dishes in the sink. We will continue to have three goals each week to help promote good

behaviours, habits and OSHC routines.

For the art and craft side of things we have had painting activities every morning and afternoon for children who wish to participate.

We have been going outside close to every morning and afternoon to enjoy the last of the sunny weather. We have had other

self-initiated activities including beads, Lego, board games, group games, cubby house, story writing, cards, construction, drawings

and more.

Reminder: Camp Australia Cancellation Process
