School Review Day Outcomes Our school has been engaged in its scheduled four year review with Department of Education staff this term. A very detailed Self-Evaluation Report has been produced, reflecting on school achievements and student learning outcomes over recent years. This report has been presented to School Council at a specially convened meeting in August. After two recent days of reviewing and data analysis, some emerging areas for focus over the next four year period are likely to include –

Student learning growth targets for all students of at least one Victorian Curriculum level of learning progress in each school year in English and Mathematics

NAPLAN Year 3 to 5 Relative Gain measures to consistently show more students making high relative growth and less students making low relative growth

Increasing percentages of students in and maintaining high levels of achievement in English and Mathematics (as reflected by Teacher Judgements with A’s and B’s)

Review of our Instructional Model, embedding the ‘High Impact Teaching Strategies’

Review of how Mathematics and Reading are taught in classes with an enhanced purposeful differentiated approach

Continue to use Professional Learning Team and Community approaches to support teacher capacity building

Review leadership structures and distributive models Enhance efforts and arrangements that promote increased

opportunities and success through partnerships, especially with parents

Further activate student voice, leadership and agency in own learning

Further develop a consistent whole-school approach to health, wellbeing and inclusion

I’d like to especially thank Gwyn Morrison (School Council President) for her valued contributions across these recent review days.

Term 3 Unleashing Potential Award Winners These will be announced at the last assembly for the term – on Monday 18th September at 9am in the Multi. (There will not be Student of the Week presentations accordingly)

Term 4 School Captains & Leaders Students have been considering applying for these important roles and nomination speeches are being facilitated this week. Also at assembly next week, the Term 4 Student Leadership appointments will be made with our new leaders presented with their badges by their respective incumbents.

Football & Soccer in the School Grounds I remind students that football and soccer games need to be played on our school oval and not on the basketball/netball courts and asphalt play areas. We are fortunate to have such large grounds for students but do need some restrictions on which activities are encouraged in some specific areas. Ball games near windows can also be problematic – we have had two broken windows recently.

JB & JH Relocating to Multi from Day 1, Term 4 Builders are being appointed to the refurbishment project in the Junior/Admin Building and we should see action from the start of Term 4. Which will allow builders access to parts of this building in a sequenced manner, from day 1 Term 4 Junior B and H will initially operate from the Multi. We plan to set up the Multi for both classes with the necessary furniture, ICT resources and usual Junior classroom materials. Partitioning will create some shared and also some separate learning spaces.

VSSS Good luck to our Victorian State Schools Spectacular team with their upcoming Melbourne performances at Hisense Arena. This dedicated group have two long days of rehearsals, leading into their two big shows on Saturday 16th September. We look forward to

hearing about their success and also seeing the VSSS performance on TV in Term 4 (date to be confirmed). What a sensational activity for children to be involved in!

Prep Transition Visit Day 1 On Monday 18th September at 2pm we welcome next year ’s Prep students, who will visit Mano as part of their transition program (this is the first of four visits planned for the later part of 2017, for the 2018 Preps). This is a very exciting time for these students as they begin their ‘readiness journey’ for schooling. A big warm welcome to the families who are joining the Mano community with their eldest child commencing with us in Prep in 2018. The next scheduled Prep transition session is Wednesday 18th October at 2pm.

Kardinia International School Band Visit On Monday next week we are pleased to have this band visiting Mano to perform for our students – at midday in the Multi. There is no cost for this activity. I am most confident that this visit will help foster our school’s love for music and compliment the terrific work that Ms Clutterbuck does on a daily basis with our students. I also note that some preliminary work is going on for next year’s biennial Mano School Concert – it promises like the recent Art Show was, to be a memorable and inclusive event.

Hats and Term 4 Outside Play A reminder that our SunSmart policy requires us to wear hats when outside at playtimes – Mano hats are available from Bellarine Uniforms, 162 Moorabool St, Geelong. It is great to see some students already wearing their broad brimmed hats when outside. Teachers next term when on yard duty will be asking students without a hat, to play in the shaded areas.

Tom Lonergan Signed Football Winners After guessing accurately (or the closest) two students won the signed Tom Lonergan footballs via the ‘Guess Geelong’s Score for the Recent Finals Game vs Richmond’ Competition. Congratulations to Nicholaas Spanninga and Lukas Young who had the closet guesses to the Cats score of 40 points and won the autographed footballs.

Pupil Free Day Term 4 – Monday 13th November Just a reminder of this Term 4 Pupil Free Day. Teachers will be involved in a full day of Professional Development around Writing (VCOP – Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation). This is the Monday of the 6th week of Term 4. The last day of Term 4 is Friday 22nd December.

New Hand Rail on the Steps Outside Art/Library Entrance A new centre hand rail has been added to the steps outside the Art Room and down to the walkway to the lower terrace. I hope this helps with safety and we encourage all students to keep to the left when going up or down these steps.

Next Working Bee – Sunday 8th October 9-11am In readiness for Term 4 and with spring weather hopefully approaching, this Working Bee will help ensure the school grounds are in great shape. Please come along and show your support for an hour or so – feel free to bring a friend and your children. Morning tea will be provided.

Last Day of Term 3 Friday 22nd September is the last day of Term 3 and students will be dismissed at 2:30pm on this day. After School Care will operate at an earlier time accordingly and the school lunch break will be adjusted to be slightly earlier on this day too. Term 4 begins Monday 9th October at 9am. Assembly on this day will be planned for outdoors, with Junior B and H temporarily being relocated into the Multi due to building works.

SWPBS Update

The Middles have been unpacking the vocabulary for the

fortnightly focus to ensure all students have an explicit

understanding of their expected behaviour.

This week we have been creating our own definitions for the word

‘cooperatively’ from the SWPBS statement ‘I work

cooperatively with my peers’.

At home you could as a family have a round table conversation

about what it looks like for you as parents to work cooperatively

with others- maybe your examples are from work.

Prep-2 Swimming Program

With Term 4 fast approaching our swimming program is just around the corner. This is just a friendly reminder that swimming will be coming up in weeks 7 and 8 of Term 4 (20th November-1st December) Similar to last year the Geelong College Rec Centre is closed on the second Thursday meaning our program will be a 9 day program. The cost for the program will be $76. Swimming groups will be formed over the next few weeks and our Prep families will have already a received a swimming abilities checklist that they are asked to fill in and return ASAP. Junior students are already in groups from last year’s program however if your child has made a large jump in levels since last year please see me so I can look to adjust their level. More information to come at the beginning of Term 4.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they’ll explore Tokyo Disneyland with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. Students who make 15 or more School Banking deposits by the end of Term 3, 2017 will be automatically entered into the draw. This is another great way to motivate students to save regularly and reach their savings goals.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school
