The Anglo-Saxons

In the 5th century three Germanic tribes, the Angles, the Saxons, and

the Jutes, come by sea.

they gave Briain its new name : England “the land of the Angles”.

After the king, the most important member of Anglo-Saxson society were the EORLS: a kind of hereditary aristocracy

and the THEGNS, warriors who devoted their life to collecting taxes

and to administration of justice

➢ in the bottom of society there were slaves.

➢ most Anglo-Saxon invaders were farmers

➢ but many of them were also deep-sea

The major gods of the Anglo-Saxons were Tiw,Woden and Thor,

Frig, the bride of the Woden, the god of death and battle .

During the period of Anglo-Saxon power, Pope Gregory I the great sent Augustine to bring Christianity to England.

However it was the Celtic monks, from small communities in Wales and Ireland, who brought Christianity to common people.

The monasteries became important centres of culture where Latin was introduced once again..
