Anglophone Literature Ph.D. Exam

(A) Working Definition

Taken literally, Anglophone literature refers to literatures written in English; however, in

literary studies the term has many inflections, hence the need for a working definition. Forthe purpose of this e amination, we define Anglophone literature as literatures in English produced !y writers from nations that are former colonies of "ritain, e cluding the #nited$tates. The term Anglophone% highlights the linguistic commonality of these writings.&owever, Anglophone literary critical discourse recogni'es that the shared historicale perience of "ritish colonial rule and contemporary forms of imperialism forge other formsof connectedness of these writings !esides the use of English. (n addition, the discourse takesinto serious account disparate historical, cultural and political conte ts within which theseliteratures are produced. Finally, it should !e noted that as a field of study, Anglophoneliterature has much in common with )ommonwealth literature, *ostcolonial literature and

+ew iteratures in English.

(B) Time Frame & Geographi al Area!-e will cover writings produced from /01 to the present, and initially !y writers fromAnglophone Africa, $outh Asia, and the )ari!!ean, including those from these areas in

postcolonial diasporas.

9. "e familiar with social, cultural, and historical particularities of the Anglophone areasidentified a!ove. For e ample, students should !e conversant with slavery in the )ari!!ean,the partition of (ndia, independence movements in Anglophone Africa, apartheid in $outhAfrica, and postcolonial migrations.

:. "e familiar with critical theories that have !een used to interpret Anglophone literature and !e a!le to apply insights gained to produce theoretically informed analyses of primary te ts.
