IN 1845, THERE WAS ONLY ONE CHURCH onSydney's North Shore - St. Thomas', then a muchsmaller building. With growing settlement on theNorth Shore, St. Thomas' began to have difficultiesin accommodating worshippers.

To relieve this need and to meet the needs ofparishioners on the harbour's edge, the Bishop ofSydney, Frederick Barker (pictured), gave hispermission for services to be held in a Church ofEngland School in Union street.

The was on condition that the new congregationbegin planning to construct a permanent church. The foundation stone was laid on 25th August, 1869.

It took almost fourteen years of planning,fund-raising and building before the church wasdedicated by Bishop Barker, 140 years ago, on1st June, 1872.
