Judges' Profiles

Barry Blunden — I have owned dogs for nearly 40 years and involved in showing and breeding Bullmastiffs for much of that time. I started judging in 1990 and award CCs in Bullmastiffs and Leonbergers. I have judged Bullmastiffs at Championship level in Europe and North America. Although most of my judging experience is in the Working, Pastoral and Utility Groups, I have judged Terrier and Hound breeds on several occasions. I endeavour to attend breed specific seminars on all the breeds that I judge.

Frances Richards — I have owned Bearded Collies since 1978 and have made up one Champion, and in the few litters that I have had, have produced another CC, Reserve CC and Junior Warrant winners. I have had Australian Shepherds since 1996 and award CCs in both breeds. I have judged a variety of other breeds in the Pastoral and Working Group at Open Shows and the Group on several occasions.

Lesley Layland — I have owned Golden Retrievers for over 25 years and have been active in the breed since 1993, when together with my family, we bought our first ‘show’ Golden. Since then I caught the ‘showing bug’ and now regularly attend open and championship shows. I have judged for 10 years and thoroughly enjoy each appointment. I have previously served as an executive committee member on the Northern Retriever Association, and now help run my local ringcraft club.

Jan Fiers — I started judging in 1989, my first appointment being AV Hound classes. Since then I have concentrated on judging Toys and Hounds as I own Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, plus an ETT. I have also owned and shown CKCS, an Otterhound, a Welsh Springer, and am an active committee member of both SYWC and the ETT Club, as well as stewarding up to and including Championship shows, both breed and general.

Veronica Avory — I have owned Border Collies for over 35 years and have always maintained a small kennel, and was delighted to make up my first champion in 2010. I first started judging in 1985 and was approved to award CCs in Border Collies in 1997. I have also had the pleasure of being invited to judge abroad on two occasions, which proved to be a most enjoyable experience. I am presently on the A3 list for Briards, Australian Shepherds and Alaskan Malamutes.

Where the Best of Breed, Best of Group or Best in Show is a puppy it will also automatically be Best Puppy in Breed and Best Puppy in Group or Best Puppy in Show respectively. competition. Dogs may be withdrawn from Any Variety Classes when judged before Breed Classes. Proviso: For the purposes of this Regulation, dogs beaten in competition for Stud Dog, Brood Bitch,

Progeny, Brace and Team or a Special Award confined to a single breed, will not be considered to be beaten dogs.

13. Exhibits will not be admitted to Best in Show competition after a period of ten minutes has elapsed since the announcement that exhibits are required for judging, unless they have been unavoidably delayed by previous judging not being completed on time, and then only with the special permission of the Show Management.

14. No modifications will be made to the Schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.

15. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

16. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor.

17. Dogs in Cars on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.

• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.

• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink.

• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog. • When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. • Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of

water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. • Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to

dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. The Show will be held under KC Rules & Show Regulations and it is on this understanding only that entries are accepted.

20. Should a judge be prevented from fulfilling his/her engagement the Committee reserve the right to appoint another judge to fulfill their duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no fees will be returned.

21. A judges decision is final except in a case of fraud or misrepresentation or where a mistake has been made bona fide by the judge. Judges are instructed and empowered to withhold a prize in any class if in their opinion the dog(s) entered do not possess sufficient merit.

22. The attention of exhibitors is drawn to the proposed order of judging published in the schedule. This will be adhered to as far as possible but after 12.00 noon (midday) the Committee reserve the right to alter the order of judging if necessary.

23. The Committee will not be responsible for the loss, detention of, or any damage to any dog or other property whether arising from accident or any other cause whatsoever or for any act or omission of themselves, their officers or others and it is on this understanding only that entries are received.

24. Should any question arise not provided for in these Regulations, the decision of the Committee shall be final, subject only to appeal to the Kennel Club. The Committee of the Kennel Club shall be the main Court of Appeal or Umpire in all questions or disputes of any kind whatsoever except where such powers are delegated by the Committee of the Kennel Club.

25. All classes will be for Dog or Bitch unless otherwise stated. When more than 20 entries are received for any mixed breed class that class will be split into two separate classes by sex.

26. No animal other than a dog duly entered at the Show will be allowed within the precincts of the Show. All dogs must be brought with a suitable collar and lead and must be properly supervised at all times.

Exhibitors showing dogs are not permitted to hold conversation with the judge during the competition, any exhibitor who persists in addressing the judge, after being requested not to do so by the ring steward, the judge or Show Manager, may be disqualified and any prizes awarded to his/her dog forfeited. No person other than the exhibitor (officials exhibited) will be allowed in the ring during judging.

28. Any owner, competitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches.

29. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).

30. A dog may be disqualified by the General Committee from any award, whether an objection has been lodged or not, if proved amongst other things to have been: a) registered or recorded as having been bred by the scheduled Judge, this shall not apply to a Judge appointed in an emergency; b) exhibited without payment of appropriate entry fees.
