Welcome from the Vice Chancellor

Hello and Welcome.

Thank you for taking an interest in Anglia Ruskin

University. I very much hope you will join our

progressive and highly successful academic community

which is making a huge impact on social, cultural and

economic development worldwide.

I hope this prospectus gives you much of the information

you need, and that you will want to find out more about

studying with us. We are a friendly place, offering plenty of

support and guidance throughout your student experience.

This support takes many forms, but most importantly we

focus right from the start on helping you work towards your

chosen career. For example, we offer every student the

chance to study our entrepreneurship module. We have

close partnerships with local, national and international

businesses and, at the time of writing, 90% of those of

our former students who responded to a national survey

reported being in employment, further study or both within

six months of graduating.*

We are proud to be a modern University – but we are also

proud of our long history. This dates back to 1858, when

John Ruskin founded the Cambridge School of

Art, now part of our Cambridge campus. Ruskin had

wide-ranging interests, including painting, architecture

and philosophy; with a creative, enquiring mind, he was

not afraid to be unconventional. These are all qualities

we encourage in our students, and I believe they enrich

not only the academic life at Anglia Ruskin but also

our culture and social interactions. Ruskin’s influence

is also felt in the range of expertise we have here.

Our reputation is growing in a wide variety of fields, giving

our students a wealth of opportunities. You can take

advantage of these opportunities at one of our two main

campuses: in Cambridge itself, the historic seat of learning,

or in Chelmsford, the city which is host to the regional

government of the County of Essex. Both offer a lively,

rewarding setting for student life, and both places provide

access to excellent facilities for study, sports, and social

activities.

I hope you enjoy finding out more about us, and that you

will consider joining us. We are committed to making your

time here happy and fulfilling – and to supporting you in

your next steps in life.

Professor Michael Thorne, Vice Chancellor

Our Language Centre offers a comprehensive range ■

of English language support including drop-in support sessions and assignment support workshops.

We look forward to welcoming you in the future.

This programme appealed to me immediately as it covered a very wide range of areas in film studies including theory and practice. In these last three years, I have become immersed in so many creative activities that have helped me to grow personally and professionally. I have worked for the Cambridge Film Festival, I co-produced a short film, one of my video works was screened at an international film festival, another at the Arts Picturehouse in a special female filmmaker’s screening. In addition, I was awarded a grant by Anglia Ruskin University to go and participate in a unique silent film festival in Italy, Le Giornate Del Cinema Muto. I visited Venice Architecture Biennale and got an artist residency in Germany for two months, where I taught a video production course and programmed a film-screening event. Most recently my 16mm film was screened at Serpentine Gallery along with many other artist filmmakers.

Since I have enrolled in this MA Children’s Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin, I feel like I have finally found my place in the world. The course is comprised of students from all corners of the globe, from South Korea, Italy, Norway, Vietnam, Poland, China, Thailand, Venezuela, Australia, England and the USA. It makes for a vibrant and incredibly supportive, creative environment. The course leaders, Martin Salisbury and Pam Smy work tirelessly to present us with a wide variety of international guest lecturers, published illustrators, editors and art directors, as well as organising opportunities to meet with publishers to show our work at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

I can confidently say that MA Printmaking has extremely encouraged my creativity. All different equipment is available in the printmaking studio to assist students in innovation and inspiration. The tutors were extremely supportive and co-operative in making this learning experience an invaluable one.

To be accepted by two conferences as a speaker was not something I expected before I started this course. When I look back at my studies in the last two years, what I clearly see is that I would not be able to come to this point without the knowledge the course has given me and without my supervisor's help and feedback. Choosing this course was one of the best decisions I took for my career.

It was clear that the MA Film and Television Production would help me to not only further develop my existing skills, but also to learn new techniques, obtain relevant theoretical and practical knowledge and expand my abilities.

I have had a great time during the MA Film and Television Production, and have found many opportunities to explore and gain the knowledge necessary for success as a professional in the future. My ambition is to become a Producer/Director and I am certain that with the experience and knowledge I am gaining through the course modules and the great support from my module leader, I will be able to achieve my goal.

I undertook the Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) at Anglia Ruskin University because it offered me the chance to improve my practical skills as a Nurse and provided me with the chance of fulfilling my dream of registering as a Nurse in the UK. The course has enabled me to gain an insight into the differences between working as a nurse in India and the National Health Service (NHS), meaning I was able to gain exposure to more areas of nursing and gain a greater understanding of nursing in the UK. Initially I found the academic side of the course very different to how I studied back home in India, but thanks to the excellent support that I received from my tutors and my fellow colleagues I was able to quickly adapt and successfully complete the course. I am planning to undertake further continuing professional development training with Anglia Ruskin.

I have always wanted to study in the UK and the Public Health course at Anglia Ruskin University was recommended to me by several friends who had already studied here. They told me that the campus, its facilities and the support given to students were all excellent and I have to say they were right! The campus is modern with excellent library and classroom facilities, my tutors are all extremely friendly and approachable.

“I am really enjoying my studies, particularly our research methods and non-communicable disease management modules. I am really keen to undertake more research in communicable disease management, possibly within a PhD here at Anglia Ruskin.

“During the course I have been given excellent support from my tutors and have been able to undertake field trips to London, specifically looking at waste management systems; it was great to be able to go and see how things are done first-hand. I have also been able to take part in and help to organise a range of public health related conferences.

“I am now a member of the Royal Society for Public Health and joined the American Society for Nutrition. I would 100% recommend my course to anyone thinking of studying Public Health in the UK, the course has helped me to develop both personally and professionally and allowed me to have a greater understanding of effective public health practice and how to tackle inequalities in health.

I would recommend the course to those that want to be trained as critical, contemporary and diverse public health officers. Although you may have to read a lot, you get more critical in global issues and refined in your technical writing abilities. Help is also readily available from dedicated tutors and friendly course administrators. I enjoy our lectures, especially our lively group discussions. I learn a lot about different countries, especially with my classmates coming from different parts of the world. It is like getting a sneak preview of their world and their culture, this makes it more exciting.

I was initially attracted to the course because there aren’t really any architectural technology courses run back home, so thinking about the future I wanted to be amongst the first from my country to study this subject. I like that we have to understand every step of the architecture process so it’s very interesting. I also like the technology part as it involves all aspects of architecture. My plans for the future are to finish my degree with honours, and then go back home and continue with my company for three to four years and develop it, then I would like to come back to the UK to study a Masters degree and maybe a PhD later on.

Above: Architectural student, Chelmsford campusAbove: Optometry student, Cambridge campus

Optometry is challenging as well as interesting. You will have the opportunity to explore the various aspects of the science of light with respect to vision and in addition, develop mathematical skills which will help you in practice. Furthermore, if you like the thought of helping people, this course offers the human touch which means you will have to deal with patients while delivering the best standards as a healthcare professional.

I am particularly delighted to say that the course is above my expectations. With the lecturers available whenever there is a part of the course, from early mornings in their office to even late nights through emails, coupled with the rich resources in terms of textbooks and study spaces offered by Anglia Ruskin University’s library. The eye clinic of Anglia Ruskin University is well equipped for the student to explore and enjoy the subject and its applications. From keratoscopy to probing into the inner features of the eye, a whole range of equipment is available to help us in our task. I am delighted to say that studying at Anglia Ruskin University is a pleasurable experience.

I benefited from my course, because I had a chance working with software and products that is actually used in my industry. I wanted to be as well rounded in Audio/Video Technology as possible. My course exposed me to post production, which was a skill set I was lacking. It will ultimately make me more marketable when I will return to the work force.

We have a community of around 450 research students based in our four Faculties:

Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences (ALSS)Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education (HSC&E)Faculty of Science & Technology (S&T)Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS)

Most students are undertaking research towards a doctorate. There are several types of doctorate degree: the traditional doctorate, namely Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the practice-based doctorate, the Professional Doctorate (DProf) and PhD on the basis of published work. An applicant may also seek admission to study for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Professional Masters.

Each of the four Faculties has a Director of Research, a Director of Research Students and a Research Administrator. All research students, with the exception of those registered for a PhD by Published Work or MD by Published Work, will have a supervisory team. In the first stage of their research, Professional Doctorate students, however, are supported by an academic adviser and the Programme Director. Research students registered for a PhD by Published Work or MD by Published Work have an academic adviser(s) rather than a supervisory team. Research students need to adhere to the Research Degrees Regulations, which are updated annually.

The following section describes the different types of Doctorate in more detail.

Types of DoctorateDoctor and Master of Philosophy (PhD/MPhil)

Generally, the candidate identifies an area where significant new knowledge or understanding may be generated. Having identified an intellectual problem (‘gap in knowledge’) the candidate establishes the research question or hypothesis. The framework for undertaking the research is then formulated. Full-time PhD students normally complete within three to four years.

MPhil candidates also critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and must demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field.

We offer PhD and MPhil study across a wide range of subject areas and in each of our four Faculties.

Professional Doctorate (DProf)

The Professional Doctorate has the expectation of enhancing and making a difference to practice. The candidate is expected to draw on theory in explaining and understanding research. Many DProf candidates carry out research in their own work-place, given that they are particularly well-placed to do this.

DProf programmes at Anglia Ruskin University are in the following subject areas:

Practice-based Doctorate

Practice-based Doctorates include practice as an integral component (or theorise that practice). This type of doctorate advances knowledge partly by means of practice. Creative work must be accompanied by a written component (thesis or commentary), the length of which must fall within the boundaries established by the Research Degrees Regulations.

PhD on the basis of Published Work

Candidates who have published work, normally written within the last ten years, that demonstrates an independent and original contribution to knowledge and an understanding of research methods, may apply to establish a prima facie case for the award of a PhD or MPhil.

How to apply

There are a number of research networks which operate across the Faculty and wider University and many of these are interdisciplinary, bringing together diverse experiences of academics, researchers and practitioners. These operate informally and more formally through our extensive research network.

As a Faculty we host a series of postgraduate research events including seminars, meetings and postgraduate training (in addition to the University-wide training programme). We have an on-going programme of events for all students to encourage integration within the wider student and academic community including guest lecturers, quiz nights, art exhibitions, free Friday concerts and other social events.

We also specialise in offering specific support for students who may be undertaking practice-based research for the first time. Two large study rooms, equipped with computers, are dedicated to the Faculty’s research students.

Our specialist areas include:

Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education research degreesResearch is an integral part of the Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education. We provide a creative and energetic environment for undertaking research that addresses real issues across the full spectrum of health, social care and education. Research units academics, researchers, postgraduate students, research users and service users work together in a shared community of enquiry.

The Faculty’s reputation for undertaking high-quality, meaningful and timely research continues to grow. There are a number of international collaborations with partners in Israel, Moscow, Ukraine, Canada, the United States of America and elsewhere.

Researchers within our Faculty are involved in multiple collaborations with local, national and international agencies in the statutory and voluntary sectors.

One of our primary goals is to expand and develop research and scholarly activities across a number of health, social care and educational themes. We currently focus on three core areas: childhood in society and social inclusion, communities and participation, and early childhood research. Additional work is developing around nursing research and practice-based education.

We currently support almost 100 research degree students in their studies towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Professional Doctorate (PrD) in Health and Social Care. You will enter the programme as part of a cohort, normally at the start of the academic year in September or in January. However, registration outside these dates is permitted. Study to MPhil or PhD can be full-time or part-time, but only part-time study is available for PrD. While

there is potential to transfer from MPhil to PhD (or vice-versa), the conceptual differences between PhD and PrD means that at present there is no possibility of transferring from a PhD to a PrD programme (or vice-versa). Study for MPhil/PhD requires you to undertake an in-depth research study that can relate specifically to your own practice, but alternatively can relate to the wider sphere of your practice, or perhaps to theory underpinning that practice.

The PrD differs from MPhil/PhD in that the study must be explicitly located within your own practice and employing organisation. Accordingly, the focus of the study is anticipated to relate to the needs of the employer. Our Faculty was the first to establish a combined (interdisciplinary) professional doctorate in 2002 and the award has recently been revalidated to introduce more flexibility through the introduction of intermediate awards towards PrD registration.

Faculty of Science & Technology research degreesOur research has been a story of continued and accelerating expansion. Our research profile emphasises our commitments to developing close links with industry, the professions, business and the public sector and a strong involvement with the development of the regional economy. Research is a particular strength of the Faculty of Science & Technology, having been rated ‘world-leading’ or of ‘international’ quality for our Psychology, Vision, and Environmental Sciences research in our RAE 2008 submission.

We currently have 130 research students in our Faculty, over a quarter of whom are international students. Our Faculty hosts 14 research groups in which our research can be undertaken to PhD or MPhil level.

Our focus is on developing knowledge and understanding of international management practice in private, public and the third sectors. LAIBS researchers have expertise in a number of key international management practice areas:

Supervision and academic support

A suitable supervisory team is allocated to each research student. Each team has 2 academic supervisors. The first one is usually an internal member (Anglia Ruskin University academic) and the second supervisor can be either an internal or an external member, depending on the subject area. Although we have highly knowledgeable academic staff, we also use external expertise in order to get a better insight into the selected topic or subject.

In addition to the mandatory training organised by us (from RDCS), we also offer a series of workshops and training within the Faculty.

Facilities support

We are located in the new Lord Ashcroft Building, where a research area has been developed for our research students. They can easily access a computer, desk and other facilities (i.e. printer, scanner, etc.). The University Library is also situated in the same building and is open 24/7 during semester time.

Our Research Institute and Centres

The Lord Ashcroft International Business School has established the Institute for International Management Practice (IIMP) to provide an impetus to, and a focus for, internationally recognised applied business research. The Institute engages with businesses and organisations to create new knowledge and insights into international management practices, helping understand their impact upon organisational performance and innovation, and on economic and cultural development - at national and transnational levels. The IIMP translates this business insight and delivers it to the international business community in a way that has impact, relevance and added-value. Some of the specific themes being pursued as part of the IIMP's mission are:

In support of these themes, the IIMP has created an international research centre for the Caribbean (in partnership with the School of Accounting and Management in Trinidad and Tobago), and supports two major research centres within LAIBS: the Centre for Enterprise Development and Research (CEDAR) and the Centre for Innovation in International Business(CIIB).

In some countries we offer a laptop alternative. Awards are made on the basis of academic merit and level of competence in English language. Once you apply for a course at Anglia Ruskin you will be automatically considered for a scholarship, and details of any award given will be included in your offer letter.

International Alumni Scholarship Scheme

This scholarship of £1,000, deducted from the tuition fee, is if you are an Anglia Ruskin University undergraduate student who is progressing to an Anglia Ruskin postgraduate course, or if you are an Anglia Ruskin University alumnus who wishes to return to us to undertake a postgraduate course of study.

Transfer Scholarship Scheme

If you are a student transferring from a partner institution with which we have a specific co-operation agreement, you may receive a £1,000 transfer scholarship as a reduction on your tuition fees.

Sports Scholarships Scheme

Anglia Ruskin offers selective sports scholarships and bursaries to students of high sporting potential enrolled on our academic programmes. Awards range from £500 to £1,000 per year, and are available in a variety of sports including cricket, rowing, athletics and swimming.

The British Chevening Scholarship

The University participates in this Foreign and Commonwealth Office-funded scheme and will accept up to ten Chevening Scholars per year on to full-time postgraduate degrees. The Scheme is administered

through participating British Council offices in a range of countries. All enquiries should be addressed to the main British Council office in your home country.

For more information about any of the scholarship schemes above, please contact us. In addition there may be more scholarships available that are based on your field of study, your home country or on a Faculty basis. Please visit our website for up-to-date scholarship schemes information.

An example budget is available on our website.

Student Visas and ImmigrationIn 2009 the UK introduced a new immigration system for anyone wishing to enter the UK from outside the European Economic Area called the Points Based System (PBS). The visa route for students is called Tier 4.

Anglia Ruskin University is a licensed sponsor under the Points Based System, and is able to issue the necessary documentation to assist students in obtaining entry clearance to the UK.

If you would like further information about applying for a visa, you can either contact the British Embassy or High Commission in your home country, or visit:

Visit: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying лл

Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for longer than six months If you are joining Anglia Ruskin University to undertake a course of study that requires you to be based in the UK for longer than six months, we will issue you with the necessary documentation to apply for a visa under Tier 4 of the Points Based System.

Once you have an unconditional offer of a place at Anglia Ruskin University we will issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The CAS is an electronic record held on the UKBA system, and includes a lot of information about you and your offer of a university place, such as your passport number, details of the supporting documents you have provided as part of your course application, and information about the University.

Your CAS will be issued when you have fulfilled all the conditions of your offer of a place at Anglia Ruskin. This will usually include payment of the required deposit. Once we have issued a CAS for you, we will send you a letter outlining the details of your CAS, including the 'CAS number' that you will need to include on your visa application. Once you have received this, you can apply for your visa.

Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for six months or lessIf you are joining Anglia Ruskin University to undertake a course of study that requires you to be based in the UK for six months or less, we will issue you with the necessary documentation to apply for a Student Visitor Visa. A Student Visitor Visa allows you to enter the UK and study for six months or less.

This applies particularly to students who are coming to study on one semester programmes (such as Study Abroad) or are undertaking a 'dual award' programme where less than six months of the course is based in the UK.

If you are coming to Anglia Ruskin University to study an English language course lasting less than six months, but intend to then continue studying at Anglia on a degree programme, we may be able to issue you with a Tier 4 Student Visa under the Points Based System.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance certification from The Foreign and Commonwealth OfficeInternational applicants who are applying for postgraduate level courses in certain science or technology subjects (and who are not from either a European Economic Area country or Switzerland) will require ATAS clearance certification from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At Anglia Ruskin University, this will mainly apply to students undertaking Research degrees in the Faculties of Science and Technology, and Health, Social Care & Education. If you require an ATAS certificate, we will inform you of this requirement in your offer letter and provide you with details to support your ATAS application. Further InformationFrequently Asked QuestionsQ. Do you have an office in my country? Do you visit

my country?A. We have a regional office in Pakistan, and are

represented by student recruitment companies (‘agents’) in many other countries. Staff from our International Office also spend a lot of time visiting countries to meet and interview students. You can find details of overseas representatives and visits on our website:

Visit: лл www.anglia.ac.uk/visits

Q. What kind of support is available for international students?

A. The International Student Advice Service can provide visa and immigration advice (including advice on working entitlements) as well as general support for international students.

For more information about general support for international students:

Visit: лл www.anglia.ac.uk/studentsupport

Q. Do you offer an Orientation programme?A. Yes, there is an International Orientation Programme

in both September and January to welcome new international students.

If you would like to find out about programme dates and information on how to book a place in this programme.

Visit: лл www.anglia.ac.uk/internationalarrivals

Q. Can I work part-time?A. Students on a Tier 4 Student Visa can usually work

up to 20 hours per week during term time. Our University Employment Bureau can assist you in finding part-time work.

Q. Do I need to take care of my medical insurance?A. It is advisable to check whether you will be covered

by your own medical insurance from your home country while you are in the UK. If not, it is highly recommended that you take out extra private medical insurance to cover your stay in the UK before you travel. Students studying a course for longer than six months are entitled to free UK state healthcare (NHS). This will in most cases cover any treatment (except dental care) by a doctor or in hospital.

However, insurance is recommended as the NHS will not cover all costs in the event of a serious illness. Endsleigh Insurance, in conjunction with UKCISA, has a special policy for international students. If you are on a programme that is shorter than six months, and you are not from an EU country or one with a reciprocal healthcare arrangement, you will not receive free health care from the NHS and so should take out medical insurance before you leave home. For more details about Endsleigh Insurance:

Visit: лл www.endsleigh.co.uk and click on 'students'

Q. Will you help me find internships or work experience?

A. Our Faculties have links with a number of different companies, and can certainly advise you in ways of finding placements or internships.

Q. Do you have a Visiting Student programme?A. Yes, we welcome one semester or one year visiting

international students. Please contact us for more information or visit our website:

Visit: лл www.anglia.ac.uk/studyabroad

Q. Do you have prayer facilities?A. The University Chaplaincy offers dedicated prayer

rooms at both campuses for students of the Islamic faith, as well as quiet space for contemplation and prayer open to students of all faiths.

Q. When will I receive information about arriving at Anglia Ruskin?

A. You will receive an email with arrival information to the address on your application form at least six weeks before the start of your course. This information will also be uploaded onto our website at:

Visit: лл www.anglia.ac.uk/internationalarrivals

Q. Can I visit your University, if I am in the UK? A. Yes, you can either come to one of our Open Days

or we can arrange a tour around our campuses and meetings with academics in your chosen area of studies.
