LED lamps offer extraordinary advantages over other lighting modes:

G Low energy consumption G Resistance to shocks and vibrations

G Long life G Generation of pure coloured light

G Low maintenance G Small size

LED lighting has become a desirable alternative to incandescent and fluorescent

lighting due to rising energy costs, stricter and more pervasive energy regulations

worldwide, and the improvement in the lumens per watt of high brightness LEDs.

The question is; what if you know what you want but would like professional advice

    XLamp MC-E LEDs - White & Colour

The XLamp MC-E LED is a lighting-class multi-chip LED that provides 4 times the flux as XLampXR-E in the same footprint, without compromising thermal performance. XLamp MC-E reduces LED system costby reducing system complexity and the number of components required.

This powerful combination is designed to enable new applications and reductions in overall system costcompared to other LED packages. At 9.8W, the XLamp MC-E LED being demonstrated provides up to 790lumens at 6000K and up to 605 lumens at 3000K.

    XLamp MC-E LEDs Colour

The first of its kind in the industry, XLamp MC-E colour is a unique package design, combining white, red, green, and blue LED chips in a single component. XLamp MC-E can allow better colour mixing and shadow reduction incolour-based applications, with space between LED die reduced by 94%, compared to XLamp XR colour LEDs.

The Cree Product Characterisation Tool (PCT) allows you to select frommultiple lighting-system design parameters to compare up to three LEDmodels simultaneously.

For all valid LED drive currents, the PCT quickly and easily does the following:

G Shows all critical LED design parameters, such as luminous flux and

    efficacy, for selected LED models

G Performs de-rating calculations based on junction temperature (Tj)

G Calculates LED valuations, such as lumens / cost

G Estimates simple LED design parameters, such as the number of LEDsrequired and total power consumption

    Super 0.5W PLCC-4 Power LEDs - White & Colour

Avago Technologies new range of half-Watt PLCC-4 LEDs offers the ideal solution for decorative and moodlighting applications and is available in the full colour range. The improved package is based on the industrystandard PLCC-4 platform (3.2x2.8x1.9mm) and enables a higher drive current of 150mA. Higher drive current ispossible due to the enhanced heat dissipation capability which also allows you to operate the LED at up to+110C ambient temperature. The package is highly reliable and has a long lifetime due to enhanced siliconeresin material and the very low thermal resistance of only 60K/W (junction-to-pin).

High brightness LEDs are rapidly becoming a prominent source of lighting and have better efficiency and reliability when compared toconventional light sources. While LEDs can operate from an energy source as simple as a battery and resistor, most applications require anefficient energy source not only for the reduction of losses, but also for the lumen maintenance of the LED itself.

    DRIVER ICs

ZetexAdvances in high brightness LED technology are enabling the lighting industry to transition to more efficient andreliable solutions, while also introducing new capabilities in control and industrial design. Zetex has a longassociation with the lighting industry and is committed to maintaining its position as a principal supplier ofelectronic drive and control technology to lighting and luminaire manufacturers.

Their expanding family of high brightness LED power management and constant current drive products, with anextensive library of proven reference designs, provides efficient and cost effective solutions.

Maintaining consistent illumination whilst limiting battery power consumption demands robust and efficient highbrightness LED (HB-LED) drivers. Zetex boost LED drivers and buck LED drivers are not only recognised for theirhigh efficiency and cost effectiveness, they're also renowned for their incredible versatility.

    Diodes Incorporated

Diodes Incorporated has introduced a family of LED driver ICs capable of significantly reducing the number andsize of external components required by drive circuits. Secondary optics are optical elements used in addition to the LEDs primary optic to shapethe LEDs light output in either single or cluster form. The first steps in selecting the bestsecondary optics for an application is to determine what illumination levels you want toachieve and over what area. Once you know how much light you need, it is then possibleto decide what type of LED is required and how many.

Anglia Lighting offers these optical elements from four leading suppliers:

    THERMALPRO

    DUCTS

THERMAL PRODUCTSOne of the most important factors to consider during the design of a lighting system using LEDs is how are you going to control and get ridof the heat which is generated. Using our experience we are able to recommend the best thermal solution for your application using productsfrom six leading manufacturers.

It is not always necessary to use sophisticated thermal products. Sometimes standard FR4 may be suitable. One of the most importantfeatures of CREE XLamp LEDs is their electrically neutral thermal path. This feature allows the light fixture to make use of FR4 PCB withthermal vias, which is 8 to 10 times less expensive than MCPCB.

Get in touch and we will help you make the right choice for your LED lighting application.

    Aluminium Heatsinks

Probably one of the most obvious and simple ways of cooling electronic components, however some thoughtneeds to be applied to how you will interface the LED to the heatsink. Generally there will be a PCB between theLED and the heatsink, which means various thermal interface materials need to be employed to enable theefficient transfer of heat from the LED to the heatsink whilst maintaining electrical isolation.

Traditionally heatsinks employ either an aluminium or copper material hence the need for thermal interfacematerials to provide electrical isolation.

Ceramic HeatsinksA further type of heatsink is also available which uses a ceramic material that is electrically neutral and does notrequire electrically isolated thermal interface materials. In some cases the LEDs can be mounted directly ontothe heatsink meaning no PCB is required. These ceramic heatsinks are useful in applications where a muchhigher thermal performance is required. We are happy to offer advice on the use of these materials.

    Heatpipes

A more efficient way of removing heat is by using a heatpipe, which allows you to remove large amounts of heatwhilst only requiring a relatively small surface area compared to a traditional heatsink. The heatpipe works usinga combination of vapour, condensing and capillary action all contained within a sealed pipe which has finsattached to further aid cooling. Anglia are able to offer thermal solutions utilising this technology.

Metal Clad Printed Circuit Boards (MCPCB)

MCPCBs offer one of the most effective methods of thermal management for lighting designs utilising LEDs.

    MCPCBs comprise of 3 main components;

1 - Copper conductor layer where the LEDs are mounted.2 - Insulator; a very thin thermally conductive but electrically isolated laminate material.3 - Metal cladding - a sheet of aluminium or copper substrate which dissipates the heat produced by the LEDs.

These MCPCBs also allow easy interface to a heatsink or the outer housing of the customers applicationto aid cooling further.

    Fans

NMB-Minebea offer a full range of Radial Fans and Blowers, which can be used in combination with the otherthermal technologies mentioned above to increase the thermal performance of your application even further.
