What is an Urban Design Framework?

Example of previous Urban Design Framework: Freeling

$550,000 state government funding for major upgrade to Hanson Street including road

narrowing, under grounding of power lines, tree planting, feature paving, pedestrian safety

measures, and installation of new street furniture and lighting.

What is an Urban Design Framework?

The development of Freeling Estate will blend perfectly with Light Regional Council’s award-winning plans to improve the Freeling township.

The State Government announced late last year that $550,000 had been allocated to Light Regional Council to redevelop Hanson Street in the centre of Freeling. The grant has been made

available through the Government’s ‘Places for People’ funding scheme.

The planned work includes planting street trees, feature paving on footpaths, pedestrian safety measures, new street furniture and lighting, and car park and road improvements. The works will complement heritage listed buildings and other historic buildings in the street.

The Council previously engaged leading architectural firm Hassell to prepare the Freeling Urban Design Framework for the town.

The resulting vision is to provide a place to live that retains its rural character and preserves its heritage, while promoting growth and revitalising the town centre.

This vision has already received the plaudits of the architectural and planning community and has received awards from the Institute of Landscape Architects, Planning Institute of Australia and Urban Development Institute of Australia.

Land Services has been working closely with Light Regional Council to create its own masterplan for

Freeling Estate that fits in with other council improvements planned for the township.

The development will link in with the adjacent recreation precinct which includes wetlands, an oval and other open space. Encumbrances will also be put in place within Freeling Estate to ensure all buildings achieve a high design standard.
