Project Description* Picture Your Garden! Engagement with Icons and Symbols of the Borderland will link art and ecology to

build a grassroots project in partnership the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center and The Juntos Art Association to develop creative, adaptable field-based community connection within the COVID-19 realities and the work of artists in alignment with museums, schools, state and national entities. Our solution-oriented collective project embraces the arts, science and humanities as a fulcrum to better balance the dissonance and challenge of the present day’s health emergency, regionally and globally. The challenges necessitate a reorientation of how we see the world and most urgently, how we reconstruct the framework of discourse and exchange between a diverse regional community and our relationship with the natural world. Picture Your Garden will shape a community-sourced virtual initiative that leads to a participatory installation to feature garden immersion, literally and metaphorically, from imagination to constructive creations in rural, suburban, or

Project Narrative1. What is planned?* Describe project plan and indicate which parts of project any NMHC award will fund.

Picture Your Garden! Engagement with Icons and Symbols of the Borderland will link art and ecology to build a grassroots project in partnership the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center and The Juntos Art Association to develop creative, adaptable field-based community connection within the COVID-19 realities and the work of artists in alignment with museums, schools, state and national entities. Picture Your Garden will shape a community-sourced virtual initiative that leads to a participatory installation to feature garden immersion, literally and metaphorically, from imagination to constructive creations in rural, suburban, or urban settings in Southern NM. Our objectives for short and long term outreach are aimed at integration of shared perspectives with hands-on measures to improve humans' bond to the landscape and our food systems during existential Crisis. Embedded within the platform of the traveling exhibit, the project emphasizes experiential outreach modifiable to the changing circumstances of the Pandemic's impact. This project ties to the exhibition and book launch in New Mexico that chronicles art from the U.S. / Mexico Borderland, scheduled display at the Carlsbad Museum in 2021. This proactive partnership will:

1) Build a digital template for connection with the New Mexico audience by means of website platforms that include introductory video, a virtual gallery, captivating segments of programming by artists and humanities scholars and invitations for inter-generational participation for the digital gallery and installation project. The regional alliance will leverage their networks to connect within their communities and garner the support of artists, students and educators for creative experiential learning outside the classroom by means of visual art and writing about the gardens of New Mexico! The project will be shared through social media outlets to encourage further response and opportunity for dialogue and exchange of a shared experience with wide range of voices and terrain.

2) Collaborate with communities in Carlsbad and other partners in Southern NM to generate a tangible, result-oriented outcome. Picture Your Garden will shape a multi-perspective art installation that is designed as participatory outgrowth of the exhibition with an emphasis on the “Comida y Bebida (Local Food Ways)” and the “Environment”; it corresponds to food insecurity as a result of COVID-19, and how the communities of Southern NM can be more in tune with the environmental landscape they inhabit. Participants will photograph, draw, and document their garden experience at the micro and macro level. We'll encourage submissions from all garden types (indoor, outdoor, greenhouse, etc.) and stages that reflect seed planting to harvest and the four seasons. We will include images created in the 2020-21 time-frame in order to share a story that depicts a year of growth cycle. Content will elaborate on exhibit materials while scholars provide inter-generational guidance to enhance connections between art and ecology. Symbolically speaking, a garden exemplifies renewal and rebirth. To collect information for this portion of the project, a google form will be shared on social media utilizing the hashtag #PictureYourGardenNM and target the demographic population of the communities in Southern NM and encouraging further outreach across the state. As the information and images are collected, the curatorial team will filter and review all images to create a high quality representation in a virtual gallery for wide dissemination; and, from the collection we will create an installation piece that reflects a colorful spectrum of community perspective and experience for portable display and exhibition in 2021.

3) Conceptualization for the grassroots community installation is designed for ease of mobility in rural and urban locations and integration with the exhibition at the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center. The intent is to create a 10foot by 10foot printed fabric collage of images from the best of the digital collection during the months leading up to the exhibition and shared on the museum and the Juntos Art Association websites and social media. Developing these much needed digital tools will provide more than insight to arts and culture;

Page 8: Angelica Barrios-Testa City of Carlsbad of the Borderland ... - Picture Your Garden.pdf · urban settings in Southern NM. Our objectives for short and long term outreach are aimed

it will extend the opportunities of connection beyond the walls of the Carlsbad Museum to a collaboration that links the local experience and rural communities with the wider world.

A multidisciplinary approach will engage participants in learning about images that explore the region’s

animal and plant ecosystems, food, culture, and history. Art and images will reflect deep roots both north and south of the border and the inherent mestizaje, a blend of indigenous, Mexican, and American heritage across the length of the bi-cultural, bi-national landscape. The hands-on project will provide insight to arts and culture; and through partnerships, we will increase access and visibility to the initiative. Online programming is essential to a collaborative effort that meet's the need to develop new platforms for engagement with community and view unique perspectives of the US-Mexico crossroads at a critical point in US history. The regional alliance will provide creative tools of access that provide an introduction to sustainability and humanities themes with inspirational interactive components that foster community participation and dialogue within the changing landscape of our times.

2. When will it take place?* Planned public program dates and times.

Aug. 2020: Digital templates/forms for “Picture Your Garden” are created and publicity begins with short film to invite garden engagement in the 2020-2021 timeframe. We'll utilize scholar images in stages of promotion and instruction.

Sept. 2020-Apr. 2021: Programming sections will be scheduled to guide the participant's process during the Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. Publicity continues for “Picture Your Garden” as community members are encouraged to submit images of their garden experience within project parameters. With assessment of audience response, we'll adjust the strategy, if needed, to reach the targeted demographic population. Project partners will reach out to the community as needed to further encourage engagement. Project team reviews photographs for the digital template and mobile installation. Digital Project Manager shares selected content via social media and websites.

May 2021: The team will complete the mobile installation and begin initial display at locations in Southern NM. Project team creates publicity to promote the unveiling at the Carlsbad Museum.

June-Sept. 2021: Project exhibit at the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center.

3. Where will it take place?* List communities of public programs, including venues.

Through digital engagement of content, our project reach is unbounded and will take place online through partnership websites. The workshops and display for the physical community installation will take place on a small scale within the communities of Southern and Southeastern New Mexico in a manner that is in line with safe engagement protocols by our various partners. The large scale exhibition will take place at the Carlsbad Museum & Art Center in the City of Carlsbad with paid ads in the New Mexico Magazine to target the state wide audience and beyond. The engagement project will be flexible to showing inside the museum walls or outside in the adjoining Halagueno Park, it will lend itself to mobile installations at outdoor locations and public places that begin at the art and ecology laboratory, that is the base of operations and instruction in La Union, with participants along the Highway 28 cultural corridor, and wherever host organizations sponsor a space to setup a physical and digitally projected display.

5. How does this project involve the humanities disciplines?* The act that established the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) says, “The term ‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism, and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.”

Picture Your Garden, Engagement with Icons and Symbols of the Borderland taps into the connections between arts and the ecology while fostering digital interactions on the topic amongst communities across the state, but especially addressing the environment in Southern New Mexico. The project will embody the landscape and cultural legacy of the U.S./Mexico borderland as related to gardens, farms and food systems that shapes our patrimony. Serving as an external repository of accumulated memory built over the vastness of centuries and continents, visual community contributions will touch upon a shared regional consciousness

Page 10: Angelica Barrios-Testa City of Carlsbad of the Borderland ... - Picture Your Garden.pdf · urban settings in Southern NM. Our objectives for short and long term outreach are aimed

of place and time. Together, these works created by a grassroots community effort will synthesize in a creative depiction of the contemporary borderland and form touchstones for audiences to explore the entire range of humanities disciplines. “Picture Your Garden” is a practical application and hands open component that will foster deeper learning and reflection of the diverse ecological heritage of southern New Mexico.

Picture Your Garden is both a digital engagement project and a collaborative art installation that particularly connects to the Comida y Bebida (Foodways)” and “Environment” focus of the Icons and Symbols of the Borderland collection in which it will be embedded. The idea sprang from the food insecurities that resulted from COVID-19, and how our communities can be more in tune with the environmental landscape of the Southwestern United States and New Mexico. In a regional alliance that includes a varied segment of representations, participants will document their experience of imagining and then creating their garden within the space they have available, in rural, suburban, or urban settings. “Any land will flow with milk and honey if it is worked with honest hands!” In step with a quote by New Mexican author, Rudolfo Anaya, in "Bless Me, Ultima", we envision this inspirational project to motivate individual and collective effort to honestly work their own space, create their own hands-on project and link it to the big picture.

The project includes literature, history, philosophy, ethics and arts as the humanities and social sciences provide a means for humanity to discern meaning about themselves and their natural environment. In "Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm", Stephen Harrod Buhner emphasizes the importance of the human being's connection to the earth and their specific ecological function. There is the additional opportunity in learning about the arid climate of the southwest to engage with and learn from the indigenous populations of this region, who valued the connection with the natural environment. Several Juntos artists have indigenous roots and share these roots through their artwork and project guidance. While there is work done in connection between social sciences and the environment, our project deepens that connection through the introduction of visual arts. Our Humanities Scholars are experts in their fields, with knowledge about the environmental landscape and communities of Southern New Mexico, along with expertise in art history and criticism will link the art of the ISB project with the natural landscape. Thus, our project will further provides accessible information to the community members via digital communications.

6. What are the evaluation criteria for the project?* Consider the impact the project intends to have on its audience and how that will be measured or evaluated by the Project Director and Evaluator.

When tracking website analytics, social media engagement, actively recording audience statistics, archiving all digital and print editorial publications and the implementation of comment cards (at museum and digital feedback form) to gather audience fee back, the CMAC and JAA along with the Project Director and Evaluator will review the project’s effectiveness through the following categories:

Audience: How many people did the project reach? What age groups did the project reach? What are the demographics of the populations reached? Did the project reach its intended audience (City of Carlsbad, South Eastern New Mexico, Southern New Mexico, under-served communities of Southern New Mexico)? Did it reach an audience broader than Carlsbad, New Mexico? What other community groups benefited from this project?

Education: Did the project bring something to the Southern and South Eastern New Mexico region that otherwise would not have been available? Was the project widely accessible to an intergeneration audience? Did the project serve families?

Impact: Did the outreach project motivate hands-on garden awareness and development? Did the project encourage a grassroots participation for increased environmental awareness within the geographical landscape of the region? Did the project provide community members practical tools to further their

understanding of the arts and humanities of Southern and South Eastern New Mexico? Did it generate dialogue among a diverse audience?

7. What is the role of each humanities scholar(s) in this project?* Describe the intended contribution of each humanities scholar listed above. What humanities issues will they address?

Diana Molina - Project Director - Diana will take the lead required to reach the goals of the project and its initiatives while coordinating the efforts by different partners and co-curating the outreach project with Rebecca Gomez. From her experience with the project content and concept, she will guide the aesthetic quality and content of the project and ensure it stays on mission and meets the planned objectives in a timely manner. Embedded on a desert mesa within the Chihuahua Desert, she will provide the base of operation for the art and ecology laboratory setting for remote engagement and development. She will provide important instructional content to the process of photography and sustainable landscape within the Chihuahua desert.

Rebecca Gomez - Digital Project Manager - Rebecca will co-curate the outreach project with Diana Molina and manage the digital components of “Picture Your Garden”. Utilizing her project management skills and her knowledge of archival practices with digital media, she will work with the project team to revise and update the website, write publicity content for newsletters and social media posts to communicate with the community members. She will coordinate the collection of images and data from the community through the use of digital forms, while managing the metadata for the project. Drawing from her curatorial background and special interest in New Mexican art, culture, and history, she will further serve as a point of contact for community members to reach out to with questions about the project and help to curate the mobile installation. Additionally, she draws her knowledge of gardening from her grandmother, who has maintained a home garden in the central valley of Albuquerque for over 3 quarters of a century.

Dave Morgan - Project Advisor - Dave will coordinate with project team to ensure project reaches the CMAC community.

David DeWitt - Videographer and Film Editor - David will assist to present the project with public outreach and education through video and digital media as part of exhibits and installations, through website and social media, and with materials to support public lectures and presentations. He will also serve in an advisory role for related website design and digital media creation.

David Cristiani - Project Advisor - David's study in geography and gardens is to document the elements

that make the US-Mexico borderland appealing and significant. That focus proposes to inspire cultural appreciation and application of the Chihuahuan Desert and adjacent areas, to include natural areas and communities. The knowledge he offers regarding the frugal use of water in the challenging terrain and his embrace of our region's native aesthetics and flora will underscore how to develop new areas, renew and preserve existing communities, and create lifestyles that are unique to our area.

Irene Oliver-Lewis - Project Advisor - Using her writing and theatre expertise, Irene will use her personal garden as the foundation for a multi-arts piece during this time of isolation. She explores environment, family legacy, visual art, photography, and the spoken word. She lives in the family compound that is located in the 1849 property that is part of the city’s original townsite. Her family heritage includes Mexican, Indian, and Hispanic ancestors that were in the Mesilla/Dona Ana territories before it was the United States. Her garden still has plants that were planted by her grandmother in the 1930’s and she works on the spot where the family had a Victory Garden during the depression. She created an ofrenda to honor the unnamed persons who have passed during this pandemic. Picture Your Garden also utilizes Irene’s education/scholar expertise to create participatory arts integration and multi-aged materials that highlight the exhibit.

Cristina Dominguez-Eshelman - Project Advisor - Using her experience working with a nonprofit that supports sustainable practices, she will be an asset to help engage community members.

Miguel Valenzuela - Graphic Design, Artist, TV Program Host - Miguel’s background in the Arts, Education and Communication will assist the project’s Graphic Design needs such as logos and computer generated images, and he will facilitate the bridge of information to a varied audience through his television program with guest interviews of artists and scholars that comprise the project with his regional television program Creative Thinking.

8. Proposed targeted audience/participants?* Indicate demographics and/or geographic area and projected size of audience for project events. Identify new or underserved populations that might be included in target audience.

The project targets and attracts audiences of all ages with a tie to the U.S. / Mexico Borderlands. Yet, while the subject matter is relevant to those who live along the NM border, visit the border, and consider the border at a critical point in the national debate and international relations, the digital emphasis from the outgrowth initiative, Picture Your Garden and its message of renewal can attract a wider public.

The Hispanic population in Carlsbad is 42.5, with many who speak English as a second language. We seek to expand on the portals of connection between municipalities, school districts and community

organizations to reach under-served communities and the public at-large with captivating engagement. In the present-day junction of international movements, epic crossings and shifting paradigms, ISB features a rich, textured story threaded and personified by artwork that resonates with a wide community of students, teachers, artists, activists, civic leaders, politicians, and lovers of art. Regional symbols and iconography provide an abundant varied source from which to draw upon for an evolving presentation that is both easily adaptable to a community and is directly influenced by the audience participation. Additionally, with the ISB book, the subject matter is a good fit for libraries and conducive to further exploration of topics as they relate to participants hands-on experiential participation linked by the digital tools.

9. Planned publicity efforts?* List plans by sponsor organization and partners, types of media to be used and geographic areas to be targeted.

Our publicity efforts will focus on connection with the southern and southeastern New Mexico geographic area but will invite statewide participation as much as possible.

CMAC and JAA will actively publicize the project in a variety of media and platforms statewide, regionally, and nationally that include:

A digital press release to publicize the project, which will target local and regional media. Since the community is closely tied with Texas and Mexico our media approach goes beyond the state line as there is a crossover in the population that media outlets reach across the region, additionally we encourage visitors to our area.

Our efforts will target communities in Roswell, Hobbs, Artesia, Loving, Ruidoso, Las Cruces, Anthony and the rural towns and under-represented zones that comprise the southern part of the state.

10. Value of Project on Audience Members* Describe how a successful project will impact audience members and their communities.

A successful project will impact the audience members and their communities by means of an initiative that directly addresses humanity's connection to the natural world, our food systems and our relationship to the environment we inhabit in the Chihuahuan Desert, the Permian Basin and the surrounding mountains and forests of Southern and Southeastern New Mexico. The project will deepen audience understanding and importance of culture, art and critical issues along the border region and aligns with shared objectives to expand the collective art experience as a means to foster public dialogue in a respectful, constructive manner.

As we step through unprecedented times, it is important to offer novel ways to re-connect with each other for regeneration and strategize the institutional link to community in a manner that aligns with unpredictable schedules and audience confidence in the safety of public settings. Virtual engagement will offer the means for connection with new mechanisms and modalities for a rolling re-entry by society. The educational and marketing tools offer creative means for CMAC and JAA to capture the attention of audience members and invite participatory action to the Picture Your Garden community project. Audience members will have the opportunity to engage with one another through shared experiential learning with unlimited potential for growth and the possibility to share with their community of friends and family. They will have access to experts in the field, and regardless of their experience, can gain an appreciation for the connection between art, humanities and the environment with an inspirational project infused by renewal.

11. Condensed Project Description (with credits)* Condense the Project Description into a publicity statement for NMHC use. Include funding support credits for NMHC and NEH in a three-sentence description.

Symbolism fosters a catalyst for creative connection sparked by earth-bound creativity! Picture Your Garden, Engagement with Icons and Symbols of the Borderland shapes a grassroots initiative to link art and ecology in a virtual, community-sourced alliance for re-generation spurred by the impact of COVID-19 realities; and, the work of artists. Funded, in part with generous support from the New Mexico Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Carlsbad Museum and Arts Center and the Juntos Art Association, hands in the garden will give shape to community perspectives and stories that represent our landscape and food systems.

May 1, 2020 New Mexico Humanities Council 4115 Silver Ave SE Albuquerque, NM 87108

Dear NMHC Board of Directors and Grant Committee:

Our letter is in support of the “Picture Your Garden! Engagement with Icons and Symbols of the Borderland” grant application and our commitment to partnership with the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center (CMAC) and City of Carlsbad. Juntos Art Association (JAA) is a regional, non-profit organization, with members based in the Southwestern United States, primarily from New Mexico and Texas. Our partnership with CMAC is designed to spark a regional alliance with a community-based model aligned with the times. As a Humanities Scholar who has worked with the NMHC and the CMAC, Diana Molina (Project Director) will work together with Rebecca Gomez (Digital Project Manager and prior Humanities Scholar for Humanities Texas) to guide the project in conjunction with the objectives of Dave Morgan (Museum Director, CMAC) and the City of Carlsbad’s investment in community participation.

Drawing from JAA’s 35 year history of collaboration within the arts and humanities, community engagement will be the central core of this project. JAA advocates for under-served communities to allow for new voices in the arts and culture - embracing the unique regional population. JAA nurtures the advancement of Southwestern arts, history, and culture - extending the reach of artistic expression, diversity, and unique insights gained by the collaborative experience. As we step through unprecedented times, it is essential to find novel ways to magnify our impact and strategize in a manner that aligns with unpredictable schedules and audience confidence in the safety of public settings. Our collaboration would be a strong catalyst for connection with new mechanisms as we represent the voices of Southern and South Eastern New Mexico with digital tools to enhance engagement with the arts and humanities.

Since 2015, Icons and Symbols of the Borderland exhibit has toured museums, universities and libraries across Texas; and now a book produced by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. and authored by Diana Molina. We are excited to partner with CMAC and introduce “Picture Your Garden!” as an interactive community component to the exhibition. The project, as a whole, chronicles art produced in response to life along the borderland region, and the partnership with CMAC will mark the first time the exhibit will travel to New Mexico for the summer of 2021. Developing the digital tools for connection will enable CMAC and JAA to reach new audiences in Southern and South Eastern New Mexico. “Picture Your Garden!” will deepen the roots of our relationship with New Mexican communities. With support from many committed partners, funding from NMHC will greatly enhance our ability to develop the tools for growth and re-generation. Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,

Craig S. Feronti, CPA President of the Board

April 30, 2020 New Mexico Humanities Council 4115 Silver Ave SE Albuquerque, NM 87108 Dear New Mexico Humanities Council: I am writing this letter to support the Picture Your Garden: Icons and Symbols of the Borderland project, in collaboration with the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center, City of Carlsbad and the Juntos Art Association to the New Mexico Humanities Council. Doña Ana County occupies 3,804 square miles in south-central New Mexico, bordering on El Paso County, Texas, and the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. We are supportive of this grassroots initiative as it relates to the underserved communities in Southern New Mexico. The exhibits and outreach produced by Juntos Art Association consistently relate to this county’s physically diverse landscape, with mountain ranges, valleys, and desert. With the population booming by 22.5% over a 15-year time period from 2000 (174,690) to 2015 (213,963), especially around the city of Las Cruces, it is expected to reach nearly 300,000 by 2040. We look to partners like the Juntos Art Association as we are developing our cultural corridor along Highway 28. Our residents value the variety and character of their communities, the multi-cultural heritage, and the pathways that bring people together. We especially feel that Picture Your Garden has the capacity to unite our community with a project that views its landscape and agricultural history through their own experience with art and ecology. The preservation and betterment of our unique environment within the Mesilla Valley, the Chihuahuan Desert and the Organ Mountains is meaningful to a sustainable, quality future for our residents Doña Ana County commits to assist in the building of relationships that are helpful and necessary to the success of the project. We will assist the Juntos Art Association’s effort to promote the importance of creative engagement that relates to our natural environment and local food systems. We will guide and support efforts to better develop the rural base of operations for the Art and Ecology Lab in La Union, New Mexico as a model in creative sustainable practices in the garden and farm. We are committed to the regional alliance behind the Picture Your Garden Initiative and its link with the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center and Juntos Art Association to facilitate outreach within our communities. Many Juntos Artists reside within DAC and like so many in our rural communities, greatly affected by COVID-19 and its ongoing impact. Additionally, the Picture Your Garden: Icons and Symbols of the Borderland project exemplifies the goals set forth in the Doña Ana County comprehensive plan, Plan 2040. It is my honor to provide this letter of support and be a part if this exciting project. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to email or call. Sincerely,

Christina Ainsworth, AICP, CBO Director- Community Development

To Whom It May Concern:

I wanted to inform you of some of the upcoming marketing plans for the title Icons and Symbols

of the Borderland. These plans are on a national and international level as we have distribution

channels across the globe.

Thus far, we have already scheduled two paid advertisements designed to promote the book

prior to its publication date. One of these ads is with the Museum Store Association and the

other is with Booklist magazine, a publication that is geared towards librarians in the United

States. We have already run a paid Amazon ad to increase pre-order numbers for the book.

Additionally, we have included it in our spring catalog, which has a distribution number in the

thousands.

In terms of publicity, we will be sending the press release out to all of our major media contacts.

This includes newspapers, radio stations, magazines, podcasts, bloggers, and other reviewers all

over the world. This should lead to additional press coverage and interview opportunities. This

distribution number is also in the thousands.

Our design team is in the process of creating a postcard featuring important information

regarding the book that can be mailed out to relevant contacts for promotional purposes. To

raise consumer awareness, we will be including Icons and Symbols of the Borderland on our

various social media accounts and dedicated email blasts.

These are just a few of the marketing and publicity promotions that we will be running for the

book, just to give a broad overview. More advertising and promotion ideas will be developing as

the book reaches its publication date.

Thank you for your time,

Abby Holden
