Alisha’s wish to be a zookeeper

Alisha, aged 14, from Macclesfield, is living with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She loves animals and one day hopes to become a zookeeper! So when Make-A-Wish asked what her wish would be, she chose to fulfil her zookeeper ambition and get up close and personal with the animals at London Zoo!

Alisha was taken by limousine to London Zoo and was given a VIP tour of the animals. She fed giraffes, llamas and alpacas and was surprised on the day when was allowed to hold a Kinkajou!

Alisha was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December 2012, when cancer cells were found in her neck and chest. She had an operation to remove a lump on her neck and began chemotherapy treatment in January 2013.

Sadly Alisha contracted a lung infection in February and was rushed into Alder Hey hospital where she was in a coma for a week. The chemo has left Alisha with nerve damage in her right hand and left foot which limits her ability to walk.

After the wish, Mum Nikki said: “Alisha’s illness has had a massive impact on our lives. Words can’t describe what the wish meant to Alisha - she smiled the whole day. To see Alisha happy and doing something she wouldn’t ordinarily have been able to do was amazing. She is now even more determined to become a zookeeper!”

Ben’s wish to go to the Isle of Man

Ben, aged 4 from Craigavon in Northern Ireland, was diagnosed with Hypoxia and Ischaemic Encephalopathy (lack of oxygen to the brain) and cerebral palsy in January 2011, just before his 1st birthday. Ben contracted pneumonia and had a cardiac arrest in March 2013 and the family almost lost him. So when Ben pulled through and he had the chance for a wish, the family chose to visit the Isle of Man, which is a very special place to them and holds many memories of previous happy family holidays.

Ben was treated like a VIP on his wish, and was able to do things that he had previously never done before. He went on a steam train, and travelled on a horse drawn tram and spent a whole afternoon with the Mayor and Mayoress! One of the biggest highlights was going on a roundabout for disabled children – this was the first time he had been on a roundabout and he loved it!

Mum Kerry said: “Since the wish we can see life in Ben’s eyes again. On the Isle of Man he was able to have so many life experiences that most children take for granted, like going on a roundabout and riding on the steam train. It was amazing for Ben to be involved with the activities, rather than just watching other people having fun. On the wish we were able to forget how sick Ben is and just have fun. Words can’t describe how much it meant. Ben had a smile on his face the whole time – it was amazing to see.”

Hamish’ wish to be a knight for a day

Hamish, aged 4, from Romsey, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in May 2013. Like most 4 year olds, Hamish goes through phases of liking different things. However his passion for knights, shields, swords and saving princesses has lasted the longest. So he knew what his wish was going to be! Make-A-Wish arranged for Hamish to be transformed into a fairy tale hero - Sir Hamish!

The wish began at a castle where Sir Hamish arrived in full armour and was greeted by a cast of actors. In the grand hall they acted out the story of how a boy became a knight. Hamish fought off the baddies and saved his mum from monsters like a true knight!

Mum Laura said: “The best moment for Hamish was probably fighting the baddies!

It was really good for him to enjoy just being a child instead of having to cope with treatment and other experiences children shouldn’t have to deal with. He had the best time and still talks about it – the wish provided a fantasy escape for him which was amazing.”
