Regional Updates Regions report out on activities toward current ANEW Goals (2014): Goal 1: Serve as an authoritative voice in setting legislative and policy

agenda for nursing education at local and state levels. Goal 2: Strategically align nursing education and practice to improve

health care outcomes. Goal 3: Facilitate communication among members related to the

delivery of quality education in Wisconsin Goal 4: Advance highest quality, seamless nursing education across all

levels of preparation, fostering increased BSN and graduate degree attainment.

Goal 5: Support and strengthen ANEW members in their leadership roles.

Southeast Region:

Page 3: ANEW Spring Meeting Minutes- 2016-04-06€¦  · Web view05/04/2018  · ANEW Spring Meeting Minutes. May 8, 2017 1000-1500. Fox Valley Technical College. Attendees: Kelly Dries,

Goal 1: We could do more; could ANEW make state capitol visits? Must get clarity and consistency with unified message. Next actionable step? Possibly exec committee reach out to Gina to look at WNA platform and zero in on nursing education priorities and get recommendation for timing on potential visits. Do we need a legislative liaison in ANEW

Goal 2: We meet with CNOs and deans thru SEWNA; and are launching the OR immersion with AuroraAlso healthy kids cooperative with Mayors office, Milwaukee public health Milwaukee public schools

Goal 3: Continue to bring clarity given the number of our goals! Goal 4: Conversations are continuing with MATC and WCTC with those

with BSN and MSN to foster articulation agreements state wide Goal 5: We continue to partner with CNOs to support leadership across

all roles

Northeast Region:Goal Progression1: Serve as an authoritative voice in setting legislative and policy agenda for nursing education at local and state levels.

Linda Young and Colleen Kane participated in the Be Bold III Wisconsin (sub-committee) of the Healthcare Initiative for the State of Wisconsin. Much discussion/suggestion came to expand ADN programs to get more nurses at the bedside faster. The assessment is complete but the strategic plan for the sub-committee is being finalized.

2: Strategically align nursing education and practice to improve health care outcomes.

Meeting with Northwest Funders group took place in Eau Claire with approx. 60 in attendance with small group work. The meeting participants were able to identify priorities and form a committee is moving forward with looking at rural nursing and possibly identifying a healthcare consortium.

3: Facilitate communication among members related to the delivery of quality education in Wisconsin

Linda Young has created talking points for legislators for the State of Wisconsin in terms of nursing faculty shortage, nursing shortage and possible solutions for both.

Linda had also scheduled Legislative breakfasts for nurse leaders for fall of 2016. Because of other schedule conflicts, these meetings were cancelled and will be rescheduled for the future. (Marshfield, Eau Claire, La Crosse).

Sharon Frazier assisted with facilitation of education on nursing to the UWSP Chancellor in preparation for the Legislator’s meeting.

Robin Beeman and Linda Young met with Lieutenant Governor Kleefish and Rep. Bob

CVTC and Western Tech has partnered with UW-Eau Claire has engaged in an Alliance Agreement to enhance seamless transition for BSN completion.

Viterbo also has BSN completion on-line and face-to-face regionally and state-wide.

Sharon Frazier and Colleen Kane had participated in the Aspirus Healthcare initiative to support funding and outreach to facilitate BSN completion.

5: Support and strengthen ANEW members in their leadership roles.

Internal mentoring within the Northwestern region as well as the members of the ANEW committee is ongoing.

In addition, it has been identified by a new member who has worked in other states of more of an emphasis on an awareness of policy and politics in relation to ANEW and the State of Wisconsin

Southwest Region:Follow up discussion from regional meeting in February during which we focused the discussion on student retention in relation to the socialization process. We would like to gather data about the following variables for each nursing program in the Southwest region of Wisconsin:

Presence of a student success program and identification of best practice

Types of strategies used Model used: Student success versus at-risk and remediation Prompts: What triggers the strategies/interventions planned? Timing: At matriculation

Additional discussion: Linda Scott will lead and distribute survey Aim is seamless matriculation across all degree levels, identifying

models that focus on career progression, and integrating academic and career progression

Identify resources: student success center, textbook resources, tutoring, self-identified, etc.

What is target population?

professional development Completed 2016 RN survey available on the website Beginning 2017 LPN survey – Not available until end of 2017 Completed 7th educational survey * Ongoing dilemma – should this be done annually? Response has

been varied but data is much more detailed than RN survey 10-year reflection of anniversary of WCN and what it’s

accomplished. Developing a specific report related to NPs based on RN report data Help needed: Annual WCN conference is June 5th – please promote.

culture of health – we have to raise $15,000 for host reception ANEW donated $1000. Will be at Signe Scott Cooper Hall. June 15 & 16th

RWJ grants ended January 31st related to IOM goals. Action coalition plans to forward the goals from these studies.

Compare needs in Wisconsin to findings from RWJ to identify goal(s) and find someone on each group from Quad Council to forward this goal

WNA – No representative Barbara: State-wide legislative group formed to pay for lobbyists for

prescriptive authority legislation. Talking points to be drafted and key components of legislation. BON cannot sponsor or promote – but they will be asked to comment. We need to know what they think and we need to connect with them.

BON: Jenn Kowalkowski Wendy will go to the June meeting and take notes Many proposed changes to N1 – will not hit Legislature until 2018:

o Responsibility for informing BON of change in EAo Requirement of institutional accreditation – Regional or

Nationalo Revisions to curriculumo Expect statement on requirements for simulation

faculty/staff and replacement of clinical hours with simulation

Does BON have Primer for new Deans?o ANEW doesn’t have anything to orient folks to ANEWo WONE has a great orientation program

WHA – intent is to replace Steve Rush, but they are looking at revising the qualifications for the position.

Legislative Update- White Paper Led by Linda Young and Suzanne Marnocha

Revisions made. Will be adding list of all member schools – make it very clear to legislators understand the number of voices behind this

Reading accessibility to 8-9th level for accessibility Brief and clear – we all need to have it and use it for talking points

r/t nursing educationLinda:

Original draft of white paper came from the UW deans and was revised for ANEW

Request that President of ANEW send paper to all legislators, and

Page 7: ANEW Spring Meeting Minutes- 2016-04-06€¦  · Web view05/04/2018  · ANEW Spring Meeting Minutes. May 8, 2017 1000-1500. Fox Valley Technical College. Attendees: Kelly Dries,

members send to all regional representatives Send to WNA, WCEN, WONE, ANA, WLN

Feedback from group: Consider revising wording related to “negative environment” for

nursing in Wisconsin Propose we align our document to what WICMU sent to legislators

as it was well-received. Barb will reach out for information from WICMU contact.

Concerns that document is self-serving. Need to revise to make this document a solution to the problems in Wisconsin.

ANEW does not have a lobbyist…should we? Question whether state can fund private schools. Consider focus on

loan forgiveness for programs, or grants/loans for programs at private schools.

o Linda – a precedent was set that the state gave money to private schools for medicine.

Consider effect of increasing salaries on faculty migration/retention between public and private institutions.

Use language from the Nurses for Wisconsin document? Present data and outcomes to support rationale for proposals.

o What data do we use to make the case that the nursing shortage is linked to outcomes. Pop Health data and workforce by region – overlay these. Linda Scott will send to group.

Consider include legislation from Minnesota Include salaries of new grads and compare to nursing faculty

members Consider different title: White paper, position statement, etc.

Wendy Crary moved for small group make amendments to the document with a focus on solution 1 & 4, get out for the budget cycle and change tone. Complete by May 25th. Colleen Keen seconded. Motion carried
