PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 19, 2017 CONTACT Abigail Hall Gilmore Curatorial and Programs Associate 507-424-3303 [email protected] ANDY WARHOL: MINNESOTA GOES POP FEBRUARY 4, 2017 – MAY 14, 2017 OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2017 | 7 PM – 11 PM TICKET PRICE: $15 MEMBERS, $20 NON-MEMBERS Andy Warhol: Minnesota Goes Pop is a regional reflection and reconstitution of how popular culture manifests itself in the works of contemporary artists in Minnesota. Their work engages in meaningful dialogue not only with the ever changing world around them but also with Warhol’s original pop art. Warhol dissolved boundaries between art and life, between accessible, everyday culture and high or fine art. Like a sponge, Warhol soaked up what he saw, whether he loved or reviled it and reflected it all back to us. In the main galleries of Rochester Art Center 36 Warhol prints and 11 Minnesota artists will be displayed together. The contemporary artists create from a wide range of source materials; grocery store chickens, K-Pop, terrorist attack victims’ videos, Mexican advertising, lottery tickets, old LP’s, Red Owl grocery stores and Darth Vader. This unlikely mixture of pop culture enlivens and makes more relevant the strong, repetitive staccato of Warhol’s signature screen prints. Artists include Jim Denomie, Frank Gaard, Maria Cristina Tavera, Ziyang Wu, Rory Wakemup, Krista Kelley Walsh, Star Wallowing Bull, Bianca Pettis, Dylan Redford, Nick Medearis and Katayoun Amjadi. This exhibition has been made possible by support from the City of Rochester, a generous loan from The Cochran Collection, the McKnight Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment, and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. ABOUT ROCHESTER ART CENTER A leading center for contemporary art, Rochester Art Center is a non-collecting institution located in the heart of Rochester’s historic downtown on the Zumbro River. Designed by Hammel, Green and Abrahamson (HGA), the Art Center’s simple and clean design works harmoniously with nature—linking the indoors to the outside to create a shimmering complement to the river below. Rochester Art Center is located at 40 Civic Center Drive SE, Rochester, MN, 55904 Hours are Wednesday – Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm, Thursday: 10 am – 9 pm; Sunday: 12 noon – 5 pm.
