Andy Warhol’s Silkscreen Process

“In 1961, I started doing silkscreens. I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect. With silkscreening you pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glue. That way you get the same image, slightly different each time. It was all so simple quick and chancy. I was thrilled with it.” - Andy Warhol

Warhol’s Silkscreen Printing Process• http://edu.warhol.org/silkscreen/main.html

1) Image Selection from a picture, an advertisement or a magazine2) Film Positive Creation (Image Processing) Crop picture. Transfer picture onto black and white transparent film (film positive)3) Photographic stencil creation (burn the film positive onto the silkscreen)4) Image traced onto canvas 5) Under Painting of canvas with garish colors 6) Silkscreen Printing with paint and squeegee across the silkscreen, pushing the ink through open areas of the mesh screen to recreate the image.

Brief Summary of Andy Warhol’s Silkscreen Process

“Using photo-stencils in screen-printing, Warhol used photographic images for his screenprints. The screen was prepared using a photographic process, and then different color inks were printed using a rubber squeegee to press the ink onto the canvas through the screen.”
