Hydrogen – A statement from our CEO

Hydrogen at Linde’s Annual General Meeting 2012Speech by Professor Dr Reitzle (3 May 2012)“And now a brief word on the subject of hydrogen. The potential of hydrogen extends beyond environmentally friendly transport. In a society increasingly committed to energy from renewable sources, the importance of hydrogen as a means of energy storage is also set to grow. Hydrogen is the only fuel which can store large quantities of energy from renewable sources such as wind power for a long period of time.”

Hydrogen at Linde’s First Technology SummitSpeech by Professor Dr Reitzle (17 September 2012)“The future of mobility is green – we offer Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and hydrogen (H2) as low or zero emission fuel for all kind of mobility needs.Hydrogen, in conjunction with fuel cells, has the potential to make both private and public transport more environmentally sound.”

Hydrogen at the stars symposiumSpeech by Professor Dr Reitzle (24 September 2012)“Ladies and gentlemen, imagine a journey around the globe, covering a distance of 30,000 kilometres, across 4 continents and through 14 countries. And now, imagine making this trip in a fuel-cell car. To achieve this impressive feat, we teamed up with Daimler last year for the first ever fuel-cell world tour.”

Why hydrogen for transport?

• UK Government has stretching GHG reduction targets

• Transport accounts roughly for one fifth all GHG emissions

• Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements in the universe

• Hydrogen can be produced from a number of different sources

• Hydrogen produces only water as a by–product when used in conjunction with a fuel cell

• Hydrogen offers a genuine pathway to being a zero carbon transport fuel

• Hydrogen removes “range anxiety” of BEV’s

A first for the UK

Honda, Swindon

• The UK’s first-ever public access hydrogen refuelling station

• 200kg per day capacity

• Combined 350b and 700b dispensing capability

• Joint collaboration between BOC, Honda and Forward Swindon

• Site to be expanded in 2013 to produce hydrogen from solar powered electrolysis for FLT’s and H2 ICEs

A template for “green” mass transit applications

• The UK’s first and largest demonstration of hydrogen production from wind linked to a bus refuelling station and its use as an energy store

• Key elements of project:– 1 x 1MW electrolyser– 1 x Linde IC50 Hydrogen Refuelling Station with 2 fast flow

dispensers– 10 x Van Hool hydrogen fuel cell buses– Commissioning date Q4 2013– Initial project period of 4 years– Part funding already secured from Fuel Cells & Hydrogen

Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), Technology Strategy Board (TSB), Low Carbon Network Fund (LCNF) and the Scottish Government
