Seattle’s First United Methodist Church opened its doorsnearly 100 years ago. It’s the oldest remaining building of its kindin the greater downtown area, in fact. So when Nitze-Stagen gotword that it was about to be demolished to make way for a newtower, we felt compelled to come up with an alternative tosave the historic structure.

Today, the plan is to build a 40-storyhigh rise on the site, while leaving the belovedchurch sanctuary intact.

H O W M A N Y N E W P R O J E C T S C A N Y O U T H I N K O FT H A T H A V E T H I S T Y P E O F H I S T O R Y ?

Of course, finding ways to develop projects while preservingclassic architecture is nothing new to Nitze-Stagen. Take our remodelof the 20 acre Starbucks Center in the SODO district, for example.Or the restoration of historic Union Station, which now includesseven office buildings and a total of 1.1 million square feet of space.

It’s just our way of helping to preserve the city’s past, even as we build for its future. For more information, please contact Kevin Daniels at Nitze-Stagen (206) 467-0420.

Andrew T. Miller is the father of two wonderful boys, composer, music instructor, international Steinway Artist, and the Artistic Director of the Federal Way Chorale. He has held musical posts at a number of northwest churches and taught at the collegiate level until his compositional and performing career began to blossom. Andrew is responsible for more than 1 compact disc recordings. Some of the highlights include: CrossWind’s Manic

Faith, A Meditational Rosary, We Stand Together, and their final album, the aptly titled 2nd Wind; Irish Eyes, which was recorded in London where his arrangement of “Danny Boy” was selected for and appears on National Geographic’s Destination Ireland compilation disc, two albums for United Audio Entertainment, Ltd. out of Holland, entitled Nursery Rhymes and In Love With Santa (which achieved platinum status in 200), Opera Arias, Celebrating God in Our Country, God and Man, two cast recordings of his musical theater composition entitled The Prodigal, The Legend of Pandora and a live performance recording of The Birth of Christ from 200.

Andrew has written work in the area of pop, musical theater and contemporary classical. He and his work has been featured on ABC, KOMO News, KBTC’s Full Focus, EWTN’s The World Over, Classic King FM 98.1 and Sacred Heart Radio. Some of his compositional highlights include: The Sights and Sounds of Christmas, Light Eternal, Manic Faith, Musical Theater Productions of The Prodigal and The Legend of Pandora and his Christmas Cantata, The Birth of Christ. He is currently working on a symphonic piece entitled Il Pleu – Three movements inspired by three French poems around the theme of rain, and Passion and Resurrection, another major work that will be presented by the Federal Way Chorale in May of 2007. Mr. Miller is continues to work with producers in New York for the release of The Prodigal.

The Birth of Christ was filmed at historic Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland, hosted and narrated by legendary actor Liam Neeson. It was completed last August for international distribution online and in retail outlets and nationwide PBS airings throughout the 2007 Holiday Season.

I have been told by many that in order to become a great artist you have had to endure great suffering. It has felt, at times this year, that I have dealt with enough to pass around an even share for the entire Seattle artistic community! My mother also told me that anything worth doing takes great courage and perseverance -she was right. The work that you will experience today is the result of many years of writing, the dedication of countless wonderful people, and the unified vision of many organizations.

The Birth of Christ debuted in its original form in 200, transformed and traveled to Ireland where it was filmed to air throughout the United States on PBS during the 2007 Christmas Holiday Season, and has now returned to the Northwest. It still moves me -- which means that I was only the instrument God utilized to transcribe this piece to the page. Our musicians have worked diligently to prepare this work again, and it is better than the original. The characters of this amazing story will come alive for you in a new and impactful way through outstanding solo, choral and orchestral performances. May all the small statements of “yes” by these characters inspire you - no positive act of ascent, however small, is ever un-noticed or un-necessary.

The opportunity to perform in this magnificent, century-old sanctuary of Seattle’s “First Church” is in no small part due to Pastor Dan Shelly, the shepherd of Ravenna United Methodist Church. He brought The Birth of Christ together with the worthy charities that will benefit from these three Seattle performances. Visually and acoustically, this venue will enhance what I hope to be a moving musical experience for you, the audience. It is my desire that you enjoy the performance and that it adds to the mystery we celebrate at this most sacred time of year.

If you enjoy The Birth of Christ, please mark your calendar to join the Federal Way Chorale in May 2007 for our presentation of the completion of this trilogy in my new work entitled Passion and Resurrection. The concerts will be held on May 12th and 1th at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Federal Way.

Blessings,

“The Birth of Christ”A Sacred Christmas CantataComposed and Directed by Andrew T. Miller

LibrettoPrologue | One Blessed NightOne blessed night, a star shone bright; A Symbol of loves’ pure light. Come from on high to stable low, So that all the world might know It came for them.

Gloria, Gloria sing this blessed morn. Gloria, Christ the Lord is born. Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, sing Gloria.

One blessed night, a star shone brightBut out in the fields the shepherds shook with frightFor God had sent His angel to the earthTo tell them of the Christ Child’s blessed birth -Love’s pure Light.

One blessed night so long agoCame into our lives the prophecy foretold. The promise made of old had finally come to pass. The Savior of the world had come at last.

A light for all the world to see, That would save a sinner like me. Then heaven and earth sang glories of praise, And with one voice we still sing today!

The Annunciation of JohnStanding within the sanctuary of our God Do I offer this humble prayer. And I hope, and I pray, that my people find a way,and they heed the Lord - for He will answer our plea.

Habein Yakir li Ephraim Im yeled sha ashuim Ki mida dabri bo zachor ezc’ Renu od? Al kain hamu mayeye lo Racheim Arachamenu N’um Hashem.

Fear not, Zecharias, for thy prayer is heard. Thy wife, Elizabeth, shall bear thee a son, and thoushalt call him John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness and many shall rejoice at his birth. For lo, he shall be great in the sight of the Lord And filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother’s womb.

And many of the children of Israel shall turn to the Lord their God!He shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Eliasto turn the hearts of the fathers to the children

And the disobedient to the wisdom of the just - to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. You son shall lead the way.

How can this be, this is impossible! I am old and stricken in years. This is impossible!

I am Gabriel that stands in the presence of GodAnd am sent unto thee to share with thee these tidings. But behold, thou shalt be dumb, not able to speakUntil the day that these tidings shall be performed,Because thou believest not my words.

The Annunciation of ChristHail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. And blessed art thou among women forever. Hail, thou highly favored one.

What manner of salutation could this be? What could it mean?

Fear not, Mary, for thou has found favor with God. For behold, thou shalt conceive and bring forth a SonAnd shall call Him Jesus.

He shall be great and be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father, DavidAnd He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever. And of His Kingdom there shall be no end.

How shall this come to be, I know not man?

Fear not, Mary, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, And the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. And that held Babe shall be the Son of God. For with God, nothing shall be impossible!

I am Your humble servant, the handmaiden of the Lord; The handmaiden of God. Be it unto me, according to Thy will.

She said yes for tomorrow, yes to the sorrowYes to the Almighty because she believed. She said yes to be holy, yes to give fully;Yes to the honor she would one day receive.

Hail, Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. And blessed art thou among women foreverAnd blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus, forever. Hail, thou highly favored one.

She said yes to the promise of old that the prophets foretoldHow a virgin would one day conceive. She said yes and our future was sealed, we will one day be healedBy the blood of her Son, we will one day know peace. Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. The Visitation

Blessed Mary, blest art thou among womenAnd blessed is the Fruit of thy womb. Blessed Mary, whence is this that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, The babe in my womb leapt for joy!And blessed is she that believed. There shall be a performance of those things which weretold her by the Lord.

Mary’s CanticleMy soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. For He has looked with favor on His lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed.

Magnificat anima mea dominum. Et exultavit spiritus meus in deosalutari meo. Quia repexit humilitatem ancilae suae. Ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generation.

He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His armAnd has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thronesAnd has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good thingsAnd the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant IsraelFor He has remembered His promise of mercy. The promise He made to our fathers, To Abraham, and His children forever.

For He has looked with favor on His lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for meAnd Holy is His Name.

The Birth of JohnRejoiceRejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice!Rejoice! The Lord has taken away my reproach among menAnd shown me great mercy. This babe in my arms shall prepare ye the wayOf the Lord God Almighty. Rejoice, rejoice, yes rejoice in the LordAnd the Spirit of God for He has shown mercy. Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice all ye landsRejoice in the Spirit of God.

Zecharias’ CanticleBlessed be the Lord God of IsraelFor He has visited and redeemed His people. Blessed be the Lord Who hath raised a horn of

Salvation for all and has spoken through His prophetsWhich have been since the world beganThat we should be saved from our enemies. And from the hand of all that hate us. Blessed be the Lord to perform His mercyHe promised to our fathers. Blessed be the Lord to remember His covenant,The oath which He swore to our father Abraham. That He would deliver us out of the hands of our enemiesThat we might serve Him without fearIn holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives! My child shall be the prophet of the LordGoing before Him to prepare His wayGiving knowledge of salvation by remission of their sins.Through His tender mercy, God has visited us. My son shall share the light to they that sit in darknessIn the shadow of dearthGuiding our feet in the way of peace.

The Birth of ChristSleep, oh Babe, Babe of prophecyThe world has surely needed You. Sleep, oh Babe, Babe that was foretold; The world wonders what You will be.

This little tiny Child, He is my son. This small and helpless Babe, He is the OneSent from the throneroom of God, to me, for us. Habein Yakir li, my dearest son. I know He is the One, but first He is my son.

Is this the One we seek? Prophet, Lord, or Deity. Worship Him as He sleeps? Could this be Him? He is so meek. Messiah should gather His people,Rule them as their Sovereign and King. A descendent of David, to bring us back to the LawA Ruler of rulers, peace He will bring for all. Is this the One we seek? Prophet, Lord, or Deity? Could this Child be the One, of lowly parents, Their infant son?

He should be great to rule the nation of Israel! He should be strong to bring us back to the Law!He should stand firm, a proud descendent of David! He should be mighty to bring peace for us all! Is this the One? Could it be the One? He’s just a child so meek and mild. Is this the one?Could it be the One? Is this the One?

Sleep, sleep little Babe, sleep for nowFor one day Your sorrow will be their relief. On the road You must travel, You will know such grief. Despised, and rejected by those You came to saveBut Your time has not yet come.

A Shepherd’s SongOn this night, glorious nightWe have seen marvels and wonders from heaven. And on this night, glorious nightChrist the Savior is born in a stable. We’ve heard the message of God born to man. We go to worship, Messiah has come! Why now? Why us? We are shepherds, simple, lowly, Watching our flocks by night.

When we saw the angel, we were terrified! What had we done to anger our God?But the angel said: “Fear not, for on this nightShines a star over Bethlehem bright. The King of kings is born this night for you!”

Glory to God! Peace on earth. Praise to our Lord! Messiah has come!

The angel of the Lord had left us. We couldn’t stop from trembling. What had it all meant? Messiah? King of kings? A Savior born for us? Could it be the King of kings we’ve been waiting forThe King of kings we’ve been longing for? It’s the King of kings that will save us all from death!
