Hotel Endsleigh & Hotel TresantonMILTON ABBOT, DEVON, ENGLAND AND ST. MAWES, CORNWALL, ENGLAND – Owned by celebrated interior designer and hotelier Olga Polizzi, Hotels Endsleigh and Tresanton offer the effortlessly elegant style of their designer, and two wholly different experiences.

Located in the hills of rural Devon, Hotel Endsleigh was originally built in 1812 for the

Duke and Duchess of Bedford. It served as the Duke’s fishing and hunting lodge, where over

eight miles of riverfront still offer anglers abundant trout and salmon. Polizzi purchased the

estate in 2005 and restored it in her signature style, with soft tones, unique works of art,

antiques and rich textiles. Sixteen rooms and suites are surrounded by 108 acres of wood-

lands and gardens, the latter designed by Humphry Repton in 1814. Endsleigh celebrates

the 200th anniversary of its historic gardens this year with a series of events, including a

photography competition and gardening classes.

One hour’s drive southwest on the Cornish coast is Endsleigh’s sister property, Hotel

Tresanton. A former yacht club, each of its 30 rooms and suites affords stunning views

over Falmouth Bay. Cornwall has long been known as an arts community, and Polizzi has

chosen numerous works by area artists to complement her refined aesthetic. In addition

to touring area galleries and gardens, guests can hire the 50-foot classic Italian sailing

yacht for a Champagne picnic, or make use of the eight-person speedboat to visit

nearby beaches. Recommended since 2006 (Hotel Endsleigh) and 1980 (Hotel Tresanton).

The Singular PatagoniaPUERTO NATALES, CHILE Recommended since 2012.

Interview with Felipe Sahli, owner & founder

The Singular stands in a

cleverly repurposed cold-storage facility, a National Historic Landmark site that turns 100 years old in 2015. What sparked the transformation into such a striking hotel? Simply put, passion for travel and a dedication to preserve the historical importance of the facility. We are fourth-generation descendants of the first pioneers who arrived in the area a century ago, who not only established the sheep farming industry but were responsible for the creation of the town. It is our way to pay homage to our ancestors.

The Patagonian region is world-renowned for its scenic expanses of remote wilderness, agreeable climate, unique wildlife and intriguing history. What does The Singular add to this mix? We provide an authentic Patagonian expe-rience that is true to the surroundings, history and people. The Singular is located

just three miles from Puerto Natales yet retains easy access to Torres del Paine National Park, providing guests with an unparalleled opportunity to interact with both nature and the local culture. Although in a remote location, it is a full-service hotel with full connectivity offering the largest rooms in Patagonia, as well as an expansive public space to enjoy when the weather doesn’t cooperate. And of course, we can point to the unique history the property has in relation to the area. Our buildings are where the story of southern Patagonia began, which we showcase in a carefully curated museum.

Santiago, Chile, is a world-class cosmopolitan destination. Are there any plans for a Singular in the capital city? Yes indeed. In October 2014, The Singular Santiago will be opening its doors in the Lastarria district, an iconic and preserved neighborhood with a rich history dating back to the first European settlers. This will be the first five-star, Chilean-owned luxury hotel in Santiago.

Into the Wild Mr. Harper shares 10 of his most memorable wildlife encounters.

Page 31: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine - July 2014

I have been fortunate enough to spend a significant proportion of my life in exceptionally glamorous hotels and resorts. But some of my most memorable travel experiences have undoubtedly been in wild places—in the Kalahari, the Antarctic, the Himalayas. Here are 10 wildlife encounters that left an indelible impression and that changed the way I think about the world.

1 “It was early spring: the bison were

blowing steam from their nostrils and

patches of icy snow were refusing

to concede defeat. Yellowstone

was almost deserted. We set out with our

guide, hiking along twisting paths through

tussocky grass. Prior to departure, we had

received the safety briefing “What to do if

we encounter a bear,” but the possibility

had seemed remote. Time passed and we

were far from the road, truly out in the wild.

Abruptly our guide stopped and pointed.

Perhaps 300 yards away, in the middle of

a large open meadow, a grizzly bear was

energetically foraging for food. Even at

this distance, it was easy to appreciate the

heft and power of the animal. A gusting

wind blew in our faces and presumably

masked our scent. For whatever reason, the

bear remained oblivious to our presence.

We watched her through binoculars,

with that heightened sense of being alive

that potential danger invariably brings.

Then, unexpectedly, the grizzly reared

up and turned. Out from behind a low

bush stumbled two tiny cubs, lovable

nursery toys, hesitant and still unsteady.

We observed the family for an hour and

then, euphoric, snuck away undetected.”

“The nearest orca, twice as long as our zodiac, swam within 15 feet…”

2 “We were sitting in the middle of

the Inside Passage, just after dawn,

surrounded by a gray universe.

Our zodiac was gray; the sky was

gray; the mountains were partly concealed

by a gauze of gray mist; and the sea looked

like a vast sheet of dull stainless steel.

Far away to the south, it was just possible

to make out about a dozen indistinct

black dots. After about 10 minutes we

were able to see flashes of white and the

characteristic tall black dorsal fins. The orca

pod came inexorably closer. Our situation

suddenly seemed slightly precarious and

intimidating. Forging through the flat-calm

water, the lead animal created a sizeable

bow wave that spread into a smoothly

expanding “V”. The nearest orca, twice as

long as our zodiac, swam within 15 feet,

heading powerfully north in the general

direction of Alaska. After the entire pod

had passed, we sat in silence, gently

bobbing in the wake they had left behind.”

3 “The male elephant seal can be up

to 19 feet long and weigh up to

8,800 lbs. Toward the end of an

Antarctic cruise, we landed on

the Macquarie Island, a barren speck

1,200 miles southwest of New Zealand.

The elephant seal colony there is not the

largest in the world, but with a population

of around 80,000 it is certainly impressive.

When not fighting for control of females

or a stretch of beach, the males spend

most their time ashore fast asleep. I was

able to approach to within a few yards of

the immense creatures as they snored

certainly not for the fainthearted, however.”

4 “Snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands

is routinely so good that scuba gear

is almost superfluous. Kicker Rock,

off the large island of San Cristóbal,

is the remnant of a collapsed volcanic cone.

A channel about 75 feet wide separates two

eroded tufa spires. There, we enjoyed some of

the most extraordinary snorkeling we have

ever experienced: following green sea

turtles and giant spotted eagle rays to

within touching distance and gazing down

at Galapagos sharks, maybe 50 or 60 of

them, as they vanished and then abruptly

reappeared from the milky green abyss.”

“I had wondered whether being so close to such powerful animals would be intimidating. But lounging in the vegetation, I felt profoundly at peace.”

5 “After hiking for three hours up the steep forested slopes of Rwanda’s Virunga

Mountains, we suddenly found ourselves surrounded by around 30 mountain

gorillas, including a huge male silverback, standing more than 6 feet tall and

weighing close to 500 pounds. Visitors are instructed to maintain a distance of

at least 20 feet, but no one had told the gorillas and they sauntered past almost close

enough to touch. Many people have written movingly of staring into the gorillas’ fathomless

brown eyes and trying to establish some kind of kinship. But personally, I derived the

most intense pleasure from simply sitting in silence, observing their family life at close

quarters. Prior to the trek, I had wondered whether being so close to such powerful

animals would be intimidating. But lounging in the vegetation, I felt profoundly at peace.”

6 “The question I am asked most

frequently about Africa is ‘Where

is the greatest concentration of

big cats?’ As I am not a wildlife

scientist or a statistician, I can only reply

from personal experience. The largest

number of predators I have ever seen was

at the tip of Chief’s Island in Botswana’s

Okavango Delta. It included five different

leopards on a single morning game drive,

one of which killed an impala on the

airstrip in full view of an astonished group

of arriving guests. Returning to camp, we

found the resident male leopard asleep

on the raised boardwalk, from which he

was in the habit of leaping down onto

unsuspecting gazelle passing beneath.”

7 “On a trip to the Kalahari in

Botswana, I was taken to see a local

meerkat colony, whose occupants

have become habituated to human

visitors. Meerkats are endearing small

mammals belonging to the mongoose

family. After a short drive, we came to their

network of burrows and sat down to await

their return. Within minutes, around 20 of the

creatures had arrived, squeaking excitedly.

Being in constant danger of attack, meerkat

groups appoint sentries, and the designated

animals then seek out the highest vantage

points from which to keep watch. To my

amazement, one meerkat identified an ideal

observation tower and promptly ran up my

arm to stand on top of my head, where it

remained for more than five minutes!”

“We sat watching her, mesmerized, at a distance of perhaps 30 feet…”

8 “The greatest of India’s tiger

reserves is Kanha National Park,

a remote 750-square-mile tract

of forest in the central state of

Madhya Pradesh. Kanha was the inspiration

for Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”

and here, 116 years after Mowgli’s debut,

the real-life Shere Khan continues to stalk

his prey along the reedy margins of the

lagoons. Today the reserve holds about 130

tigers and sightings are frequent. We were in

luck on our first morning. Our guide, Harsha,

stopped by a ranger station to inquire if

a tiger had been seen, and 30 minutes

later, we were perched on the swaying

back of an elephant heading off-road into

the forest. It turned out to be a young

female, perhaps 4 years old, with dramatic

markings on her rich orange fur. She was

lying in a glade gnawing at the hindquarters

of a young gaur, which apparently she had

managed to bring down with the help of

her three nearly full-grown cubs. We sat

watching her, mesmerized, at a distance of

perhaps 30 feet, for around 15 minutes.”

36 | JULY/AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2014 ANDREWHARPER.COM

Inspired by Mr. Harper’s travels in Africa

and the alarming decline of its wildlife,

the Andrew Harper Travel Office

adopted Jasiri, a young albino elephant

rescued by the David Sheldrick Wildlife

Trust after he was found wandering alone

in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, three

months after his mother was shot by

poachers. He is now doing well, thanks to

the generous donations of people all over

the world who help to fund the center, which

has successfully rescued and reintegrated

more than 150 orphaned elephants.

We spoke with Pam Sigler of the Travel

Office about the staff’s involvement

with Jasiri and the Wildlife Trust.

Why did you decide to foster Jasiri?“Andrew Harper spent a week walking with

the elephants. His experience convinced

Travel Coordinator Debra Bernatowicz

to adopt one named Barsilinga. Debra’s

enthusiasm spread throughout the office,

and other employees chipped in until we

had enough to adopt our own elephant.”

What is the most rewarding part of being involved with Jasiri?“Knowing that this elephant is protected

from poachers who seek to kill elephants

for their ivory tusks. This remains a

huge problem all over Africa and this

is our team’s small part in ensuring

their safety. Each month we receive an

email update about Jasiri; it is great fun

to keep track of our “Ellie” friend.”

What is your philosophy on the role travel companies play in such endeavors?“We should give back because the residents

of foreign countries—man or animal—

graciously welcome us to learn about their

land and culture. We are fortunate to have

these experiences and feel it is important

as a company to support such efforts.”

What can the Harper client do to travel more conscientiously?“Take advantage of the suggestions on the

reading lists that come with your itinerary.

These often contain valuable sources of

information on conservation and animal

protection efforts in the country.”

African conservation efforts. To learn

“Creatures that would not have let you approach to within 300 yards unaccompanied stand their ground and gaze imperturbably, confident that if the elephants believe you are safe, then you are unlikely to prove a danger to them.”

9 “In Botswana’s Okavango Delta it is possible to ride on, or walk with, trained African

elephants. We opted to walk rather than ride, so, as soon as the heat of the

sun began to diminish, we set out into the bush accompanied by eight or nine

elephants and several guides (including one with a rifle). A 2-year-old elephant

opted to stroll beside me, enabling me to pat his head and tickle his ears as we ambled

along. Occasionally, however, if we fell too far behind his mother, he would give me a

slight shove with his trunk as a gentle inducement to catch up. The most extraordinary

thing about walking with elephants, however, is that other wild animals are unfazed

by human presence. Creatures that would not have let you approach to within 300

yards unaccompanied stand their ground and gaze imperturbably, confident that if

the elephants believe you are safe, then you are unlikely to prove a danger to them.”

“It was a scene of such overwhelming splendor that I found myself dumbstruck and on the verge of tears.”

10 “The Serengeti’s Great Migration comprises approximately 1.5 million wildebeest and around 750,000 zebra.

For much of the time, the herds are quite spread out, and knowing precisely where they will be is problematic.

But by extreme good fortune, my arrival in the Grumeti region had been perfectly synchronized with that of

the main body of wildebeest. Tens of thousands of grunting animals could be seen trudging forward in long,

straggling lines. It was a scene of such overwhelming splendor that I found myself dumbstruck and on the verge of tears.”

Santa Barbara AREAIf it’s good enough for Oprah—who purchased a lavish 42-acre estate here in 2001—you know there has to be something special about this scenic seaside community. Often referred to as the American Riviera, Santa Barbara sits in an enviable spot surrounded by the Santa Ynez Mountains on one side and the Pacific on the other, making it an idyllic destination no matter what your pleasure.

A s A n d r e w H a r p e r wrote in last Octo -ber’s Hideaway Report, “those who never make a German trip miss some of the continent’s

great travel experiences.” Cities such as Munich, Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber and Heidelberg retain their old-world charms, untouched by the bombs of World War II or thoughtfully restored. Berlin hums with renewed energy, erect-ing some of Europe’s most exciting con-temporary architecture. And the country-side is frequently nothing short of idyllic, with wildflower-speckled meadows lead-

ing up to charming villages punctuated by centuries-old church steeples.

Just as important, traveling in Ger-many requires no sacrifices of the palate. Imaginative “New German” cuisine takes advantage of local, seasonal produce to create light, modern takes on hearty clas-sic dishes, accompanied by wines that rank among the best in the world. Food-friendly German Rieslings exhibit lush fruit, zesty acids and focused minerality, and seldom-exported reds deliver well-balanced flavors of surprising ripeness.

Because Germany doesn’t have a well-known routing comparable to Italy’s classic Venice-Florence-Rome itinerary,

we in the Andrew Harper Travel Office

wanted to share one of our favorite ways

of linking some of the country’s most

compelling destinations. Aside from a

handful of the most famous sights, such

as Neuschwanstein Castle, the places

described here tend to be refreshingly

free of the crowds plaguing many other

blockbuster attractions in Europe. Note

that this grand tour of Germany need not

be done in its entirety to be rewarding.

Those with less time could easily do just

a portion of the itinerary below and still

have a stupendous vacation.

On the Path of Grimm & GoetheThree weeks of the superlative cuisine, charming historic towns and the idyllic countryside of Germany

OPPOSITE: Lichtenstein Castle, just south of Stuttgart in Germany’s Swabian Alps. The castle was built over ancient ruins in 1840 by Duke Wilhelm of Urach, whose family still owns the building today. ABOVE: Participants dressed in traditional Bavarian lederhosen arrive for an ox-racing competition near Munich, where jockeys ride bareback on oxen across a field.

FRIEDRICHSRUHE

Favorite spot, hidden charm or must-do experience:

Our hidden charm is Schöntal Abbey. The drive there is very scenic and takes you through Hohenlohe. Founded in 1157, it impresses with a variety of buildings from the Middle Ages to the baroque era. It is also famous for the tomb of the knight Götz von Berlichingen, who died in 1562 and was put to rest next to his family members in the abbey.

German automobiles are famous around the world. What’s your ideal vehicle for touring the area?

We are happy to be an exclusive partner of Audi, as the Audi plant in Neckarsulm is just 20 minutes away. We offer three Audi self-drive limousines to our hotel guests which can be taken for day trips. You can explore the region with its beautiful hills, valleys and castles or visit Audi in Neckarsulm and Porsche and Mercedes in Stuttgart.

Favorite folk or fairy tale?

Götz von Berlichingen is not only a play from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, he also was a legendary Franconian imperial knight. He was born in Berlichingen or Jagsthausen and bought the castle Hornberg (located between Heilbronn and Heidelberg) in 1517. He became known for his role in the Swabian Peasant War, in which he was forced to be a captain. Goethe used the autobiography of Götz for his play; however he was not historically accurate in all respects.

DAY 1Arrive in Germany’s capital, Berlin. The city still bears the scars of World War II—many pre-war buildings display bullet holes—and the gash caused by the Berlin Wall will perhaps never entirely heal. But this palpable history gives the city an almost electric energy, particularly when juxtaposed against its innovative post-reunifica-tion architecture. The vibrant restaurant scene currently has a constellation of Michelin stars, with five Michelin two-star restaurants and nine Michelin one-star establishments. After dinner, chic jazz clubs, cabarets and some of the most highly regarded classical music institutions in the world compete for attention.

DAYS 2-4Berlin contains some of Europe’s greatest muse-ums, including the Pergamon Museum, housing entire ancient buildings such as Babylon’s cobalt-blue Ishtar Gate; the Alte Nationalgalerie, home to several rooms of Caspar David Friedrich’s most breathtaking paintings; and the Neue Nationalgalerie, with masterpieces by 20th-century artists such as Beckmann, Dix, Ernst and Klee. Take a relaxing cruise through the canals past some of the city’s most important architecture. Visit the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and revitalized Potsdamer Platz, which are all within a 15-minute walk of one another. In fine weather, the Charlottenburg and Sanssouci palaces are lovely, not only for their ornate inte-

riors but also for their formal gardens.

Favorite spot, hidden charm or must-do experience:

Frankfurt is one of the greenest cities of Germany, surrounded by the beautiful city forest, Stadtwald, with its inviting forest tracks as well as plenty of parks. Furthermore, the Palmengarten is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Germany.

Do you have a favorite folk or fairy tale, or is there one that is commonly known or associated with your region?

The fairy tale “Struwwelpeter,” written in 1845 by the Frankfurt doctor Heinrich Hoffmann.

Insider tips:

See the beautiful villages of Frankfurt, such as Seckbach, Bornheim and Bonames with its frame houses. And visit Frankfurt’s highest hill at Lohrberg Park, with its stunning views of the skyline and its notable restaurant, Lohrbergschänke.

ABOVE: While Germany has an undisputed reputation for producing fine beer, Frankfurt touts Apfelwein as its historic beverage of choice. The tart apple cider is commonly served in a ceramic carafe called a Bembel. RIGHT: The picturesque ruins of Heidelberg Castle have inspired writers such as Johann von Goethe, Victor Hugo and Mark Twain.

56

Page 59: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine - July 2014

DAY 5Fly or take the comfortable ICE train from Berlin to Frankfurt, Germany’s high-ly underrated financial center. Stay in an expanded pre-war mansion across the river from downtown, or rent a car and drive to one of the nearby lavish country estates recommended by Mr. Harper.

DAYS 6-7Those staying on Frankfurt’s outskirts can take a day to explore Königstein and Kronberg, both of which have pedes-trianized historic centers with invit-ing sidewalk cafés, hilltop castles and upscale galleries and shops. The ruins of Königstein Fortress afford grand pan-oramas of the rolling Taunus forest, well-kept villages and the distant Frankfurt skyline. In town, it’s a pleasure to stroll the linden-lined river promenade across from the skyscrapers of the city, which

also has several notable museums and countless cozy pubs and wine bars. On day seven, include an easy excursion to the Rheingau, one of Germany’s most important and picturesque wine regions.

DAY 8Rent a car if you haven’t done so already, and drive south from Frankfurt to Heidelberg, the historic university town described with such verve by Mark Twain. This picturesque city rises from the Neckar River to a sprawling, half-ruined castle. Tour the castle, wander the atmospheric old quarter—undamaged in the war—and lunch at the Goldener Hecht, a casual bar and restaurant facing the gate of the historic bridge over the Neckar. Continue south to the mansion-dotted spa town of Baden-Baden, set in the foot-hills of the Black Forest.

DAYS 9-10Enjoy some spa time, hike in the sur-rounding countryside and/or make a day trip across the Rhine into France to visit the half-timbered Alsatian city of Strasbourg, less than an hour’s drive away. Farther south, the Black Forest center of Freiburg has a well-preserved pedes-trianized core and a remarkable gothic cathedral with a soaring, lacy spire. In between Baden-Baden and Freiburg are some of Germany’s most interesting, yet least-known wineries.

DAY 11Swing northeast and dr ive to the Hohenlohe, which Mr. Harper calls “an idyllic region of groomed pastures, green mountains, steep vineyards and picturesque villages.” Here he highly recommends the Wald & Schlosshotel Friedrichsruhe, with its large spa and 18th-century hunting lodge.

The Römenberg, the historic town center of Frankfurt

57ANDREW HARPER TRAVEL OFFICE (800) 375-4685 [email protected] |

Page 60: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine - July 2014

DAYS 12-13Spend time relaxing in the resort’s spa, and make day trips into the surrounding countryside, which has yet to be discovered by most tourists. Mr. Harper notes that “the town of Schwäbisch Hall and its two excellent art museums, the Kunsthalle Würth and the Johanniterkirche, also warrant a daylong excursion.”

DAY 14Swing back to Frankfurt and return home from there, or continue exploring Germany with a visit to Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, the most famous town along the Romantic Road. Best seen as a day trip from the Weinromantikhotel Richtershof or en route from there to Munich, Rothenburg is no stranger to tourism, but its historic old town remains beguiling. Surrounded by the original city walls, the center’s colorful medieval and Renaissance buildings house a wealth of quaint shops, restaurants and taverns. Turn south from Rothenburg to the Bavarian capital of Munich.

DAYS 15-17Munich’s charming atmosphere belies the fact that it’s Germany’s third-largest city. The pedestrian-friendly historic core sustained damage during World War II, but thoughtful reconstruction and careful preservation efforts have ensured that it retains a pleasant old-world sensibility. The uncrowded Alte Pinakothek boasts one of the world’s finest collections of Old Master paintings, palaces such as the Residenz and Nymphenburg attest to the extraordinary wealth of the Bavarian royalty, and green spaces such as the formal Hofgarten and the sprawling Englischer Garten make refreshing counter-points to the urban center. Dining options range from Michelin-star palace-style establishments to stylish “new Bavarian” restaurants to casual Wirtshäuser (taverns) serving scrumptious clas-sics in venerable rooms invariably punctuated with antlers.

NIKOLAI BLOYD GENERAL MANAGER SCHLOSS ELMAU

Favorite spot, hidden charm or must-do experience:

Spend an afternoon at the Elmauer Alm, our mountain hut located just a short walk from the hotel. It offers traditional Bavarian cuisine with views of the German Alps from the year-round open terrace.

King Ludwig II also has a lesser-known architectural masterpiece, just a three-hour hike from Schloss Elmau, called the Schachen. It was King Ludwig’s summer mountain lodge/refuge, built on top of the Wetterstein Mountains with views of the Bavarian countryside as far as Munich. The lodge itself is two stories, the first is in a simple Alpine chalet style; the second story is a completely different world. Up a tiny spiral staircase, you emerge in a hidden sanctuary. Silk sofas, stained-glass windows, fountains and a star-covered ceiling deliver you into a truly different world!

What’s your ideal way to travel throughout the area?

The train: take it slow, see the landscape, feel the history. In Germany, it is truly a great way to travel. We have a train station located five minutes from the hotel and offer complimentary shuttles between the hotel and the station.

Insider tips:

Don’t miss the Schachen, the Partnach Gorge, Castle Neuschwanstein and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen pedestrian market street.

DAY 18Drive from Munich into the southern B a v a r i a n h e a r t l a n d . S t o p a t t h e Wieskirche, a rococo masterpiece of a church set in a meadow; wildly or-nate Schloss Linderhof, Ludwig II’s smallest and most livable palace; and Oberammergau, known for its many façades painted with elaborate trompe l’oeil murals. Lunch on the terrace of Ammergauer Maxbräu before continuing on to Schloss Elmau, a spa resort set in a scenic tract of pine-forested country-side at the foot of the snow-streaked Wetterstein Mountains. The views are sensational, and the expansive spa has a traditional hammam (complete with mosaics, fountains and backgammon boards) reported to be the largest in Europe west of Istanbul.

DAYS 19-21Take your time exploring the glorious scenery of southern Bavaria. Ascend to the top of the Zugzpitze, Germany’s highest mountain, which presents sweeping alpine panoramas in clear weather. (Mornings tend to offer better visibility than afternoons.) Hike or walk in the rolling forests surrounding Schloss Elmau, and don’t miss the opportunity to have a treatment in its world-class spa. Schloss Neuschwanstein, the iconic castle which inspired Disney’s, can be vis-ited as a day trip, but note that waits in summer can be extremely long. Have your travel consultant arrange for a timed entry, or simply enjoy views of the fairy-tale exterior. In the winter, Schloss Elmau has access to a range of excellent ski slopes and cross-country trails.

DAY 22Drive to Munich’s airport, return the rental car and take an afternoon flight home, or spend another night or two in the city to relax and shop for additional gifts to bring home before departing.

SARAH DRECOLL DIRECTOR OF SALES & MARKETING THE CHARLES HOTEL

Favorite spot, hidden charm or must-do experience:

If you are in Munich in warmer months, you have to visit one of the famous Bavarian beer gardens all over the city. Nowhere else in Germany will you get to know new people so easily. People bring homemade food and enjoy the sun in the shade of green trees with a freshly brewed beer. My personal favorite place is Minihofbräuhaus, a little beer garden hidden in the northern part of the English Garden.

Where do you suggest going for a great experience of German music?

Have a look at the Chinesischer Turm Chinese Tower) at the English Garden. Traditional Bavarian musicians entertain you while you’re having a Maß at the beer garden. If you prefer a contemporary style of German music, check out Zenith Kulturhalle or Olympia Park — many German and international musicians play there.

What’s your ideal mode of transportation for seeing the sites?

Germans love cars and if I traveled by car I would prefer a BMW 3-series convertible. But my absolute preferred way to travel through the country is still by train, especially between Munich and Berlin, where you will have impressive views of the countryside which you can enjoy while relaxing. The train connections are optimized and trains are really fast nowadays. And it is environmentally friendly as well.

Are there any folk or fairy tales associated with your region?

The countryside of Bavaria is the setting of many famous fairy tales, such as the ones of the Brothers Grimm. You can find mystic woods and lakes with small castles enthroned on hills all over Bavaria. Not without reason, King Ludwig II, builder of the famous castle of Neuschwanstein, is named the “Fairytale King.” His Bavarian castles even inspired Walt Disney for his fairy tale movies!

Insider tips:

The “Eisbach” at the English Garden: Spend time surfing on the river or watch the professionals and amateurs do it, in the middle of the city. You can watch them surf all year round.

Viktualienmarkt & Starnberger See: If you want to enjoy the beautiful nature of Bavaria, go to the “Viktualienmarkt” in the center of Munich and get a basket full of delicacies. Then take the train from Marienplatz directly to Starnberg Lake on the outskirts of Munich and enjoy a picnic.

Der verrückte Eismacher (The crazy ice-cream maker): As the name of the ice cream shop at the Amalienstraße suggests, quite unusual creations are offered here, such as “Weißwurst”(white sausage) ice cream, beer ice cream and tomato-mozzarella ice cream. So you can have a Bavarian breakfast made of ice cream! However, there is a selection of flavors for every taste.

A hike to the King’s House on Schachen, a mountain lodge built by Ludwig II, affords grand views of Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze.

Combining the restored 110-year-old Villa Speyer and three neo-Gothic buildings in the

vibrant Sachsenhausen area of Frankfurt, Villa Kennedy offers 127 deluxe rooms and 36

districts, including museums, opera houses and restaurants. For a more relaxed pace, the

Villa Spa has a 15-meter indoor swimming pool, sauna and eight treatment rooms offering

more than 120 treatments. Gusto restaurant serves a classic Italian menu inspired by Chef

Fulvio Pierangelini, supplemented by the Villa Garden to give guests an alfresco dining

experience with Mediterranean flair during warmer months. The award-winning JFK Bar

offers a creative menu of cocktails, while local musicians entertain with jazz, soul, funk and

classics. Located 10 minutes from the airport, the hotel provides an ideal stopover.

In the German capital of Berlin, Hotel de Rome is intertwined in the city’s history. Built

in 1889 as a bank headquarters, the hotel—which offers 108 rooms and 37 suites—has

incorporated its historic setting in former East Berlin into its contemporary use. The

cashier’s hall now serves as a ballroom, while the former jewel vault is a swimming pool.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the hotel’s location

in historic Bebelplatz is ideal for commemorating Berlin’s indelible past. Nearby land-

marks include Museum Island, the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate. The hotel’s Parioli

restaurant features dining in curved alcoves or alfresco on the terrace, while Bebel Bar is

one of the most popular hotel bars which offers live music. Both recommended since 2007.

Page 68: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine - July 2014

M ore than 2,000 years after their construction, the great build-ings of classical Greece still have power to stir the heart. Archi-tects have drawn inspiration from their elegant proportions

and graceful ornamentation for millennia, and yet the remaining original structures have not given up all their se-crets. Even the Parthenon, the most iconic Greek building, remains shrouded in mystery. How could an ancient civili-zation construct such a monumental edifice in less than 10 years, if the histories are to be believed? And how did they achieve such exquisite balance and engineering precision with the technology at their disposal? The great theaters, too, leave as many questions as answers. We can only specu-late about how a Greek play was actually performed, and what any accompanying music might have sounded like.

Yet the distant echoes of priests and performers haunt the ruins to this day, their settings on hilltops or coastlines still as dramatic as they were 2,500 years ago. And the Greeks did not confine their monument-building to the present-day boundaries of the country. Sicily contains ancient Greek ruins as spectacular as any in Greece, as does western Turkey. The Andrew Harper Travel Office has assembled a list of 10 favorite Greek ruins which represent the majesty and sophistication of the civilization. Headlines about Greece today tend to focus on its economic troubles, but seeing one or two of these ruins will leave no doubt that Greece was once a great world power.

1.THE ATHENIAN ACROPOLISAncient Greek architecture arguably reached its apotheosis with the Acropolis, built atop a rugged hill in the heart of Athens. Even though it was converted to a church, a mosque and an ammo depot which exploded, the Parthenon—the Acropolis’s centerpiece—retains its gloriously calm, well-ordered beauty. Arrive early in the day to see the monuments before the crowds arrive and, at sunset, head to the roof terrace of the Hotel Grande Bretagne for magnificent views of the Acropolis from the bar and restaurant.

2. EPIDAURUSThe Peloponnese city of Epidaurus grew wealthy because of its fame as a healing center, allowing it to finance major public buildings, including what Mr. Harper calls “the most aesthetically refined classical theater.” With sweeping views of the mountains beyond, Epidaurus’s immense theater has miraculous acoustics, allowing up to 15,000 spectators to hear actors without amplification. 3. OLYMPIAThis verdant, pine-shaded site hosted the original Olympic Games from 776 B.C. until A.D. 393, and many impressive structures remain, including a stadium capable of holding 50,000 people. Visitors can race one another there to this day, on the same ground first trod by Greek athletes. The engrossing museum houses tools used to create sculptures for the site, as well as notable works of art such as “Hermes and the Infant Dionysus,” a marble masterpiece by Praxiteles. The Romanos resort on Greece’s pristine Costa Navarino is just two hours away.

4. KNOSSOSThe palace of Knossos predates classical Greek monuments by some 1,000 years, making it all the more enigmatic. In fact, the Minoan culture which built the large and complicated structure dates back to at least 2700 B.C. According to Greek mythology, Knossos was the home of King Minos, who ordered the construction of a labyrinth in which to house the half-man, half-bull Minotaur. Rediscovered on the island of Crete in the late 19th century, the palace of Knossos has been over-restored to a certain extent, but its aura of mystery is firmly intact. It makes a fine day trip from one of the resorts at Elounda.

5. EPHESUSAcross the Aegean Sea stand the remains of one of the ancient world’s greatest cities, Ephesus. Now in Turkey, Ephesus boast- ed one of the original Seven Wonders of the World, the Temple of Artemis, as well as impressive public baths, a monumental library and a huge theater facing the harbor. The city flourished for hundreds of years—Paul’s letter to the Ephesians figures prominently in the Bible—but it declined after its harbor silted up. The ruins today are as magnificent, if not as extensive, as Pompeii’s. Many people make a day trip from Kusadasi to the ruins, but they can also be visited as a day trip from Istanbul, which is just an hour’s flight away. The ruins are also a popular cruise ship excursion, making them crowded in high season.

6. HALICARNASSUSJust a few hours south of Ephesus, the seaside city of Bodrum also once contained a wonder of the world, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Unfortunately, like the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the towering mausoleum was destroyed centuries ago. But it’s still possible to visit the site where it stood, marked by crumbling chunks of fluted columns, as well as the Castle of St. Peter, constructed in part with pieces salvaged from the mausoleum. The castle has guarded Bodrum’s harbor since the 15th century, and today it houses the excellent Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

FROM MR. HARPER:

“The most fascinating sight

is the Petronion, the

Castle of St. Peter.

Completed in 1437 by

the Knights Hospitaller,

it incorporates a mix of

marble, local volcanic

stone and, regrettably,

marble columns and

reliefs looted from the

nearby mausoleum. In

the English tower, be sure

to examine the stones

adjacent to the window

seats, where the homesick

carved poignant thoughts

about their native lands.”

FROM MR. HARPER:

“The eastern Mediterranean

is one of the most culturally

intriguing areas of the

world. Two thousand years

ago, western Turkey

was home to the Ionian

Greeks, and some of the

most impressive ruins of

classical cities, such as

Pergamum and Ephesus,

are to be found there.”

Ephesus, Turkey, is the site of several impressive ruins, including the Roman Library of Celsus (shown).

7. SELINUNTEThe ancient Greeks also controlled Sicily and southern Italy, founding numerous successful colonies there. One of the most important was Selinunte, a city now little-known outside of Sicily, with a splendidly scenic location right on the coast. Destroyed during the first Punic War and never resettled, Selinunte remained essentially undisturbed until unearthed by archaeologists. Some of its Doric temples have been partially reconstructed; the spectacular Temple of Hera is the most complete. The site makes an excellent day trip from Rocco Forte’s Verdura Resort.

8. AGRIGENTOThe Valley of the Temples on the outskirts of Agrigento also is within easy reach of the Verdura Resort. Its seven Doric temples represent some of the finest Greek architecture in Sicily. Converted to a church in the Middle Ages, the Temple of Concordia is particularly well-preserved, and it ranks as one of the more important extant structures of ancient Greece. The city of Agrigento encroaches too closely to the site to allow visitors to fully lose themselves in Agrigento’s ancient splendor, but the beautiful temples merit a visit nevertheless.

9. SYRACUSEOne of Sicily’s most important Greek city-states, Syracuse originally centered on the island of Ortygia, now home to numerous ornate baroque-era buildings as well as a 5th-century B.C. temple converted into a cathedral (the original columns are still visible in the walls.) But the most breathtaking ruins are now found on the mainland, notably the well-preserved theater and what is reputed to be the tomb of Archimedes. The Romans also added an amphitheater akin to a smaller Colosseum. This magnificent ensemble of ruins is well-worth the 90-minute drive from the Grand Hotel Timeo in Taormina.

10. TAORMINAThe Greco-Roman Theater of Taormina is one of the world’s most dazzlingly sited ruins, carved from a hillside just above the town. The sea and snowcapped Mt. Etna are plainly visible beyond the Roman scaenae frons, the columns and wall behind the stage. The theater’s excellent state of preservation combined with its sensational view make visiting it an unforgettable

experience. Travel in the off season to possibly find you have the theater entirely to yourself. In such a place, with the sun glowing golden on the sea and the mountain, the spirits of Euripides and Sophocles feel almost tangible.

FROM MR. HARPER:

“[Sicily] is famous for its

Greco-Roman remains. The

two principal attractions,

Taormina and Syracuse,

are picturesque and

historically fascinating.”

LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS

The Andrew Harper Traveler visited with Lindblad Expeditions, pioneers in small-ship expedition travel, and recent partners with National Geographic. Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Orion offers voyages in Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific, Borneo, Indonesia, Antarctica and South America, with durations of 10 to 21 nights.

Q Describe the legacy that Lars-Eric Lindblad shared,

not only with his son, Sven, but also with the world of exploratory travel?A noted environmentalist, Lars-Eric was the first to bring civilians to some of the most exotic parts of the world including Antarctica, Arctic Svalbard, Galápagos, Easter Island, the Amazon, Papua New Guinea, the Seychelles, China, and Bhu-tan—all with the focus of creating experi-ences that foster an understanding and appreciation of the most remote and pris-tine places on the globe. Now regarded as the father of ecotourism, he believed that educated people who saw things with their own eyes would be a potent force for the preservation of the places they visited, and he made his notions a power-ful force for the good of conservation and restoration projects worldwide.

What were the cornerstone journeys and how did they differ from any travel experiences of their time? Lars-Eric Lindblad was the first to take citizen explorers to many destinations where only scientists had previously gone—including Antarctica and Galá-pagos, in 1966 and 1967, respectively. They were, and still are, some of the most exotic parts of the world, and until Lars-Eric, they were inaccessible to travelers.

“Lars-Eric Lindblad was the first to take citizen explorers to many destinations where only scientists had previously gone…”

Lars-Eric Lindblad was a pioneer and trailblazer. How has Sven carried the torch and added to his father’s efforts and accomplishments? Sven maintains his father’s legacy, and his own appetite for finding new ways to experience existing places is unlimited. Some highlights of his accomplishments:

• Sven regarded his explorer father as a hero, and was enthralled by National Geographic magazine, the Society and its roster of explorers past and current. He forged an unprecedented alliance with National Geographic, which affords our guests an unparalleled op-portunity: to travel with the finest ex-pedition teams in the travel industry, plus National Geographic explorers, photographers, writers, scientists and other experts in diverse fields.

• One of the core tenets of Lindblad Expeditions is to conserve and protect the places we visit, and the com-pany is committed to conservation,

geographic education and marine stewardship. Under Sven’s leadership, Lindblad Expeditions has raised more than $10 million in collaboration with our guests since 1997, and in associa-tion with our alliance partner National Geographic since 2008, to support global, regional and local initiatives in ocean conservation, research, educa-tion and community development.

• Increased the size of our owned and chartered fleet to 10 ships

• Deepened our commitment to Galápagos by basing two ships there year-round

• Pioneered travel to the High Arctic, and now sends National Geographic Explorer to diverse sectors of the Arctic every summer season

• Created the most innovative and in-depth expedition program in Alaska

• Added expeditions into history and

culture to flank our wilderness expedi-

tions: including to Greece & Turkey,

Vietnam & Cambodia, Papua New

Guinea and New Zealand

• He added groundbreaking programs to

our expeditions. He added kayaking

to our activities in Polar regions and

in Galápagos, where it was previously

impossible, and subsequently on all

our expeditions to enable personal,

water-level encounters with beauty

and wildness.

• Incorporated an undersea program to

reveal the ocean’s mysteries, and

expedition photography to give our

guests the benefit of professional

inspiration, instruction and assistance

while aboard.

What are the most significant journeys available today?Lindblad Expeditions-National Geo-graphic has unveiled four remarkable itineraries for 2015 that offer exciting new possibilities. The voyages have been designed for those seeking ac-tive, immersive travel, and on some, to take advantage of the newly christened National Geographic Orion which has been equipped with a full roster of exploration tools including a dive master, scuba gear that can accommodate up to 24 divers at a time, snorkeling gear for all, kayaks and a state-of the-art ROV (remote operated vehicle) reaching depths up to 1,000 feet.

Q How many trips do you take every year? Four to five serious trips (of a

week or two), plus a dozen or so small (weekend or extended weekend) trips.

What is your travel philosophy?I am looking for new experiences and new stimulations through travel. I really love to visit new places and see the best that a different culture has to offer. I am peripatetic—I will not stay more than a few days at any hotel. Food is always central to my trip—trying the best res-taurants, or the best street food—and can open up new vistas on a local culture. I derive real pleasure out of a stay in a top hotel, just like a meal in a top restaurant. I also get almost as much fun out of plan-ning a trip as I do on the trip!

Tell us about your choice to visit Explora Rapa Nui: Every Christmas my fiancée and I travel as a couple for a week without our chil-dren, and then every New Year’s we travel for a week with our children. This year we decided the couple’s trip would be Chile. My fiancée really liked the idea of Easter Island—so different, so remote—and we could go from there to the wine country in Chile.

I had read a lot about the Explora lodges in Chile. The hotel has to be at a certain level of quality for me to want to go. Explora seemed to have that.

What led you to use the Andrew Harper Travel Office? I use Andrew Harper when I see a value-add—either an Andrew Harper benefit, or an unusual lo-cation where I might have some benefit from having a travel agent in the middle. Explora Rapa Nui had both of those ele-ments. Plus, every time I use Andrew Harper I am happy with the results.

Did you do any particular research or preparation for this trip?I generally do a lot of research for a trip. I found Viña Vik and it was a highlight. I worked on car rental and itineraries, including which vineyards to visit. I precontacted a few dozen vineyards and set up reservations for tours and wine-tastings (and in some cases meals) at a bunch of vineyards.

Interestingly, other than how to get to the island, I did no research for Easter Island. I purposely did not figure out what we would do there, and allowed Explora Rapa Nui to program our stay. They are really good at it, after all.

What would you share with other Harper travelers looking to take a similar trip?Chile is a highly civilized country, with more of a first-world than third-world

feel and infrastructure. It is an easy country to travel around inde-pendently. The food and wine culture is well-developed. The natural beauty is impressive, and Easter Island is a one-of-a-kind destination.

What would you advise someone to skip?Skip entering the country through San-tiago if you can. (You probably can’t.) The surcharge on Americans is expensive, but the wait to pay is ridiculously long. They should automate the process. Last time we entered Chile it was through Punta Arenas—no fee.

What item or experience was worth every penny? The car rental that gave us the freedom to dr ive from v ineyard to v ineyard . We covered three completely different wine regions: Maipo, Colchagua and Aconcagua.

TRAVEL STYLE: adventurous, independent, meticulous planner

NEVER TRAVELS WITHOUT: “My fiancée. my iPhone (and its Google Maps app) and a good book.”

Neil Morganbesser admits he’s scrupulous about travel, looking for a combination of top accommodations, extraordinary meals and locations where he can “get out and experience something unique and memorable”—which is why he chose Andrew Harper when planning his recent Christmas vacation. We spoke with Neil about his trip, as well as why and where he likes to travel.

Meet Our Travelers

Page 83: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine - July 2014

Was there a particular meal that left a lasting impression? The food at Explora was light, healthy, fresh and delicious. It had a real “farm-to-table” or “ocean-to-table” feel. We particularly liked the exotic greens in the salad—they had a spicy mustard green that was unusual and tangy.

The two meals at Viña Vik were extraordinary. Right now it is just the owner’s house with three rooms in an exceptional location with exceptional service. (They are building a real hotel nearby.) On Dec. 23, we were the only guests and we had a gourmet meal pre-pared and served to us like we were the owners. It was delightful and delicious. And Dec. 24 they did a Christmas Eve dinner that was over the top, and when we were finished, then they brought out the huge lobsters to eat!

Any highlights to share? Seeing the moai statues on some of the Explora tours was extraordinary. It is also a lovely hotel with lots of local flavor. The food is also fantastic.

“The technology to carve [the statues] and transport them is sophisticated but still somewhat mysterious.”

What in particular about the moai statues resonated with you? They are simple and huge and have a sense of grandeur and a lost civiliza-tion. The technology to carve them and transport them is sophisticated but still somewhat mysterious. They seem very human and at the same time very alien—phenomena that are simultaneously easy to relate to and incomprehensible.

What was a highlight from the Chilean wine country?Visiting Errazuriz in the Aconcagua— a great tour, great location and lots of national history.

Is there a story or event from your trip that you shared with your friends and family upon your return? The story of the Bird-Man cult on Easter Island. After they had basically torn the island apart with war (and knocked down all the statues), the people of Easter Is-land decided on a different approach to government. They had each tribe send one contestant to a holy site, and each year there was a contest to see which one could descend from the cliff, swim across to an island, and await the annual arrival of a particular migratory bird. The first contestant to collect an egg from the sooty tern “won,” which meant his tribal leader was in charge for the next year (although he had to live in seclusion and could not cut his hair or fingernails). The first Christians to see this experience recorded it for us in the 1860s and then promptly suppressed it forever.

Where are you going next? Not sure. We just started planning our August trip. I created an itinerary in-cluding Hangzhou, Lijiang, Shangri-La/Deqen (just outside of Tibet), Guilin, Hong Kong and Beijing, but then my free business class tickets disappeared while on my April trip to the East Coast! The children are pushing for Greece, so I’m looking at a Greece/Turkey itinerary, or maybe Greece/Italy.

What do you look for when choosing a destination? In all cases, a sense of culture that is dif-ferent from what we normally have in our daily life, combined with a lot of activities to keep us challenged and engaged. We don’t have a lot of downtime at the pool or in the hotel—we look for places where we can get out and experience something unique and memorable. With my fiancée, I want some luxury—the hotel, the mas-

sages, the restaurants, the tours. With the kids, it’s a little more about adrenaline and getting out and about—having some street food, paragliding off a cliff, snor-keling, etc.

And your favorite destinations for each? For couples: Italy, France, Indonesia (Bali, sure, but Amanjiwo was the high-light.) For the kids: New Zealand, Thai-land, Venice, Burma, Alaskan cruise, and the Galapagos Islands.

In all of your travels, where was your best meal?Maison Lameloise, in Burgundy; Le Calandre (near Padua) and Il Rigoletto (in Reggiolo) are close runners-up. The Inn at Little Washington (just went back for the fourth time) is still our No. 1 in the U.S.

Of any trip you’ve taken, which left you feeling the most rewarded? We did a two-week trip to Ecuador and Peru. Covered Guayaquil, the Galapa-gos, Quito, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, Cuzco and Lake Tit icaca. That was the best. Galapagos was an amazing experience—we had three of the six cabins on a small luxury catamaran, and we had the most amazing snorkeling, up to three times per day. Plus we got to see Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca. It was fantastic.

BURMA: THE CHANGING FACE OF ASIA

Nov. 4-16, 2014

Burma, now known as Myanmar, has expe-rienced remarkable changes over the last five years, however, it still has escaped the modern advances of the rest of Southeast Asia. A hallmark of colonial charm thanks to years of isolation, Myanmar provides travelers with a glimpse into a world otherwise lost. Our journey will be unfor-gettable, exploring the cultures, religion and nature of this fascinating country in Andrew Harper style.

In addition to the usual points of interest such as the tree-lined avenues of Yangon and the beautiful mountain setting of Inle Lake, we continue north to the foothills of the Burmese Himalayas to the outpost of Putao, where we travel on foot, raft and elephant to experience the pristine wilder-ness. Our journey finishes with a cruise down the Irrawaddy River aboard the luxurious Road To Mandalay vessel.
