• Music video’s tend not to change the typical characteristics of the genre e.g.

A video with a lot of women (wearing near to nothing) in the background dancing is typical of a rap video therefore most if not all rap videos are expected to be like this because most rap songs mention women in a sexual way so the women in the background or in the arms of the rappers amplify the lyrics of the song.

• Bands tend to narrate their songs so the video will be telling a story of whatever they are singing about so the band themselves are the storytellers . For example if it is a love song the video will be about two people meeting each other and falling in love illustrating the lyrics to the audience.

Narrative vs. performance

• Music videos narrate the lyrics to a certain extent they make the rest of the video unclear this intended so that the viewer can make sense of it for themselves.
