“Cities are perhaps one of humanity’s most complex creations, never finished, never definitive. They are like a journey that never ends.

Their evolution is determined by their ascent into greatness or their descent into decline. They are the past, the present and the future.”

WHAT?

To understand how of the following incomplete list may be used to create a sustainable society:

 governance

 creation of currency and value

 circulator effects

political choices concerning the commons (eg: infrastructure)

 the built environment (eg: architecture)

 technological options

access to essential services, cultural care and co-creation

 beauty.

THE UN-SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

Page 7: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

Municipalities are the first level of political expression

Collective effort enables you to make choices that people can not do alone

Similar to companies in that way

More than half of the globe’s population now lives in cities

What is it about cities that makes it worth while to single them out and address them?

DEMOGRAPHICS

Page 9: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

  Shared values & principles

  Infrastructure choices

Building codes, zoning & land use, standards

Tragedy of the commons: how we share commonly owned resources and their use

GOVERNANCE

Page 10: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

The Circulator Effect is what happens when currency moves within a “closed” system, instead of being exported

Example of Ma & Pa’s shop

  The “Wal-Mart” Effect

CIRCULATOR EFFECT

Page 11: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

By thinking openly about what currency and value are, we can avoid the trap of perpetuating externalities

By widening our concept of value creation, we can grow resilient systems compatible with our needs

This can be applied to other forms of currency: bartering, materials flows, service sharing, etc

CREATION OF CURRENCY AND VALUE

Page 12: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

Is the manifestation of the preceding issues

It is the result of vision, POLITICS, governance, knowledge and bias

Growth corridors (Hanover) & boundaries (Portland)

Transportation, power, water, waste, sewage etc.

 Buildings

INFRASTRUCTURE

Page 13: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

INFRASTRUCTURE

Page 14: André Heinz - Human Habitat 2010

Curitiba, Brazil still provides one of the best examples of (partially) integrating these concepts:

 Principles

 Growth corridors

 Transportation system

 Waste system

 Education & Values

How can we make use of our waste streams?!

Landfill site! Recycling & Processing Waste!

Biogas!District Heating & Cooling!Recycled products!

Average european household waste is about

600 kg waste per year!

One plastic bag of household waste can

cover a distance of 3,2 km driving biogas car!

600 kg of household waste per year will cover about 20% of

the average household transportation distance/year !

Agricultural waste streams = Valuable biological flows!

AGRICULTURAL

Soil  could  be  viewed  as  a  scarce  resource  due  to  the  2me  scale  required  for  systems  to  evolve  to  produce  it.  Declining  absolute  amounts  and  fer2lity  are  due  to  agricultural  prac2ces  and  land  use.  However  by  changing  these,  and  recycling  socie2es  nutrient  flows  back  in  to  soil,  may  help  stop  the  bleeding.

Heat and Power!Solar panels!Solar cells!Combustible waste heat is used to produce district heating!Organic waste is turned!into biogas!

Water!Street rainwater is !treated locally!Low-flushing toilets and !tap aerators reduce water consumption by half!

Green roofs bind rain water so that it evaporates!

Transportation!

Biogas buses!

We have a tendency to reduce things to technical solutions

Reductionism is part of the problem

Simplicity without reduction is part of the solution

  BEAUTY is the other part
