THE LINKS THAT I HAVE MADE BETWEEN WES ANDERSON AND MYSELF

THROUGHOUT MY SHORT FILM.

Anderson Vs. Barron

Introduction

My original plans were to incorporate similar cinematography techniques from Anderson films into my own short film, as this links to my research product. Not only did I do this, but I linked sound, editing and mise-en-scene as well. I’m going to show what links I’ve made and explain why I used them.

Cinematography

The point of view shot is very typical of Wes Anderson and it creates quite a whimsical effect. I used this shot for my opening sequence as I feel it creates slight confusion and anticipation towards the narrative. I believe this shot plays a huge part when recognising an Anderson film.

Cinematography

Centred shots are a common feature and really well known of Wes Anderson. These were crucial shots to add to my own short film, as they are often recognised as Wes Andersons.

Mise-en-scene

Costume: It didn’t take me too long to come up with the costume idea, as I knew Sam (Moonrise Kingdom) wore his Khaki Scouts uniform and I knew my sister had a Guides uniform. I felt this referenced the film a lot and like in Anderson’s film, created a sense of innocence within the character.

Sound

The soundtrack I decided to use was from Moonrise Kingdom, as I found it difficult to find other music that represented the idea of an adventure. The soundtrack is ‘The Heroic Weather – Conditions of the Universe’ by Alexandre Desplat. It creates a sense of anticipation and sounds quite nerve-wracking and confusing. I liked the fact that it gradually builds up and therefore creates tension and excitement in an audience.

Editing

Editing isn’t something I paid specific attention to in reference to Wes Anderson, as it doesn’t really link hugely to my research question. I edited the sequence to specific beats in the music and to points that were necessary. I mainly use cuts throughout my short film, as that’s usually typical of any film.
