The 2012 IALHA National Championshipand Foundation Celebration truly lived up toall my hopes. The event demonstrated thatgood people with a commitment to workingtogether can overcome any number of obsta-cles. I’d like to take a moment to publiclyacknowledge IALHA Show Chair Amy Star forthe countless hours she devoted to the show, not only at the event (where she worked a min-imum of 16 hours a day for 10 days straight),but also in the months leading up to it. She seta marvelous example for all of us on her showcommittee.

On the foundation side of things, Mary Adams was a superbly calm and compe-tent person in the show office throughout the week. The Amy-Mary combinationwould be hard to match! The show was a success by any metric: We had more hors-es and riders participating than we’ve seen in years; financially, it was a winner; andpeople enjoyed themselves tremendously. The IALHA has more to celebrate than just a successful national show, however.

Our membership rolls continue to grow, close to 1,700 through November 2012 –65 more than we had about the same time last year – and new registrations keeparriving. The number of participants in the USDF All Breeds program is still onthe rise, and we’re hearing reports from members all across North America whoare finding new ways to introduce their IALHA-registered horses to the largerequine community. I also am seeing more youths getting involved actively. Here in Oregon, for

instance, we’ve had early sign-ups for an upcoming halter training clinic given byHoward and Erica Peet, including 11-year-old Patrick McCann from Washingtonstate, 16-year-old Meagan Hansen from Northern California; and 14-year-oldPaige Thill from Oregon. Although Patrick has not had the opportunity to show atan IALHA show yet, Meagan made her debut at the 2012 Canadian National Show, and Paige at the 2012 Oregon State Fair. Look for all three in the future! We also had great youth classes at the National Show this year, truly impressive

displays of sportsmanship and good riding. I would be remiss not to mention that,in addition to being active competitors, Dartanyan and Summer Star were incredi-ble volunteers at this year’s National Show. They were tireless, unfailingly smilingand pleasant. Dartanyan’s name badge at the show read, “I could be President.”Speaking as one who knows the job rather well, I’d like to go on the record to statethat when he runs for this office in the future, Dartanyan Star has my vote. AM

Hopefully you renewed in time to receive your 2013 IALHAcalendar. We hope you used the 2012 calendar to note the manywonderful opportunities that arose for our horses and theirpromotion over the last 12 months. I have been impressed bythe many opportunities I have seen. The steadfast devotion of our members has been gener-

ously evident in so many ways and venues in 2012. We’veheard about well-attended shows in Canada, the ERAHCseries on the East Coast, Pin Oak, the 12th anniversary of theFiesta of the Spanish Horse, and the IALHA NationalChampionship and Foundation Celebration. Dedicated afi-

cionados ensured that the Silent Auction at Nationals truly was loaded withgenerous donations. Working equitation has found a firm foothold in Texas, with regular clinics at

Haras Dos Cavaleiros and three competitions (one at Pin Oak, one near Waco, and at our own Nationals). More Iberian horses are competing in open dressagethan ever. Ranches in Mexico, such as Las Morerìas and Yeguada Centurian, addednewsworthy international grace through their presence at U.S. events. The loyalty of vendors whose wares enhance the beauty and enjoyment of

Andalusian and Lusitano horses can be enumerated gratefully: El Sueño Español,Mustang Productions, La Tienda Española, Botas la Mundial, Elise Genest, TheIberian Connection, Aastadt Das and Making Magic Productions. Thanks forsticking by us and helping to make our National Show truly memorable for all inattendance. The annual IALHA Art Contest drew international participation this year,

culminating in a stunningly captivating image by Frédérique Lavergne for theNational Show program and t-shirt. (See artwork from Frédérique Lavergne onthe front cover.) The on-going draw of Medieval Times and Cavalia are hall-marks of the quality of their productions and the captivating nature of Iberianhorses. Both productions continue to support the IALHA and reach out to ourmembers. This is simply a short list of some of the highlights and a brief expression of grat-

itude. There are hundreds of individuals who have helped, volunteered and spon-sored to create a great year for all of our members. Let’s look for more of these cre-

ative, traditional, inclusive and expansiveways to enjoy our horses in 2013. Thankyou and Happy New Year! AM

All Good Things in Time

The IALHA National Championship and Foundation Celebration wasexuberantly attended at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Ft. Worth, Texas,in October 2012. The combined effort drew more than 150 horses fromfar and wide. Classes ran smoothly, and the atmosphere was invigo-rated by the increase in patrons and vendors during recent years. Theshow brought out the best in the attendees, organizers and volun-teers who seemed to be living on adrenalin at times.

Classes and clinics early in the week included SpanishStallion Functionality and Working Equitation,Specialty Halter and Dressage Sport Horse, andLusitano Morphology and Function. Tuesday’s WorkingEquitation division showcased the increasing popularityof this relatively new sport, with 34 riders competingacross three different phases. If the large audience in thestands and watching the online video feed during theEase of Handling and Speed Phases are any indication,we may see this division spread out over acouple of days in the near future.By the time I arrived on Friday morn-

ing, there seemed to be a sense of “allgood things in time” pervading the showgrounds and stabling. It was a welcomedtone to a colorful gathering of people andhorses from all of the Americas. I metbreed enthusiasts from Nova Scotia toNuevo Laredo, from Oregon to Ohio, andfrom Brazil to British Columbia. Each chance meeting validated the

scope and breadth of the show’s draw. Myexperiences also included some leg workhelping out in the Watt arena, back officeand IALHA promotion booth. It felt goodto chip in, and volunteering at this partic-ular venue also can be recommended asgood exercise. As the show week came into Friday

afternoon, an invitation to participate inthe planned “carousel” was extended toriders and handlers for that evening. As isa custom in Spain and Portugal, ridersand handlers were offered a chance to cre-atively show the best of their horses in alive tribute. Accordingly, a wide variety of partici-

pants entered the main arena Friday nighttogether, after having provided theannouncer with a description of theirhorses, their farms or themselves (or all ofthose) to read. Riders and handlers wereencouraged to participate, attired formal-ly or in a manner suitable to the qualitiesthey would like to showcase. This non-choreographed collection of enthusiastsrode or drove the rail until their nameswere called, whereupon they entered thecenter and displayed their horses as theannouncer described their qualities. As you can imagine, it was literally a

living carousel of exceptional horses andriders. Exhibitions of Spanish walk, piaffe, passage and dancing horses preceded the Exhibitor Party on the

Mezzanine, competing with the brim-ming vendor space. The way the showcommittee members were able to orga-nize a cheerful end to the day’s classeswas impressive. Show Saturday always sees our heavi-

est influx of visitors inquiring aboutAndalusians and Lusitanos. This yearwas no different as the crowds increased

throughout the day, and it might be timeto point out that many of the under-sad-dle classes had more than 12 entries. Ourtruly successful silent auction, composedof a vast array of goods and services, came to a close Saturday afternoon withgenuine gratitude to all who donatedand bid. An industrious calm settled over the

arena as the organizers and participantsprepared themselves for the annualSaturday night Extravaganza. It wasgreat to see multi-generational familiesof spectators in attendance for theExtravaganza. Riz Ilyas with DanielGarcia oversaw the delivery of a trulydazzling series of performances, whichincluded side-saddle precision riding;dare-devil riders; and beautiful exhibi-tions of baroque horsemanship, bull-fighting responsiveness and classicaldressage. Other crowd-pleasing acts included a

bridleless scuba diver ride, a romantic fla-menco-caballero dance and a captivating-ly graceful garocha exhibition. A long-lin-ing stallion thrilled the crowd with airsabove the ground, and a tiny pony execut-ed a Spanish walk, practically stealing theshow. Indeed, when all the participants ofthe Extravaganza returned to the arenafor encore applause, it was frankly theend of a heartwarming week. AM

The Pacific Association of the Andalusian &Lusitano Horse (PAALH) held its annual CanadianNational Show & Fiesta July 19-21, 2012, at Chilliwack’sHeritage Park.

Once again, it was a successful event, with horsesand exhibitors travelling from all around WesternCanada and the Pacific Northwestern United States. The show hosted National Championship classes indressage, performance and in-hand for purebred andpart-bred Andalusians and Lusitanos, as well as Non-National Baroque classes, for the first time open to all

breeds. This change in the program allowed moreexhibitors to come out and enjoy what has often beencalled “one of the most fun and enjoyable horse showsaround.”

Saturday featured the Fiesta of the Royal Horse which,as usual, played to a full house of more than 800 specta-tors. Organizers are especially proud of the Fiesta and thesupport it brings in from the community, as it offers thechance to promote the breed and share the beloved hors-es with a wide audience. Year End Awards2012 IALHA

Professional Horsewoman of the Year:

Jennifer Coyle JohnsonHorses have long been a big part of Jennifer Coyle Johnson’s life. As a younggirl growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Johnson competed in dressage, hunters, jumpers and eventing. Her first horse of her own, the Andalusian gelding Del-More’s Recluta III (aka Rex), was bred by her Aunt Carolyn – one of the firstAndalusian breeders in the United States. Johnson was 6 years old when Rexcame into her life as an awkward weanling, and she's been rolling with thebreed ever since.

Johnson went to her first Andalusian show in 1988 at age 10 in Findlay, Ohio– where she later went to college – and continues to support breed showsalmost 25 years later. After college, Johnson started JC Andalusians to followher dream of being the second generation of Andalusian breeders in theUnited States. More than a decade later, the dream continues at her farm inVirginia. With the help of her husband, Minnesota native Ben Johnson, JCAndalusians stands multiple stallions and has several brood mares as the foun-dation of their farm.

Johnson is active in the driving community and, currently, competes her homebred mare, JC Viva, across the East Coast incombined driving events. She now is taking client horses into the show ring in harness, and continues to be one of the leadingtrainers of young horses both within and outside of the breed. Her passion is for the foals and young horses, and she is well knownfor her skills with them.

By competing in open dressage, DSHB, eventing, show jumping, hunter/jumper, and combined driving events, Johnson andJC Andalusians have brought the breed success and recognition in a variety of venues. She has also worked to promoteAndalusians and Lusitanos at horse expos and trade shows. She has a goal of having JC Andalusian horses competing in all ofthe FEI disciplines.

In our breed organizations, Johnson has served on the IALHA Ethics committee, USEF Andalusian/Lusitano committee, and onthe Board of Directors and show committee of the Eastern Region Andalusian Horse Club.

Professional Horseman of the Year:

Joey PerezThis year, the IALHA is proud to recognize Joey Perez of The Art of Riding training facility in Silver Springs, Fla., asProfessional Horseman of the Year.

“I started training different breeds when I was 18 years old,” Perez says, “but my passion is and will always beIberian horses. I was determined every year of my life to become a better trainer and one for Iberian breeds. One

day, luck came my way as I was offered a trainer position at aP.R.E. breeding farm.”

There, Perez continued to hone his skills as he focused onlearning the foundations of classical dressage with the help ofmaster trainers. When the opportunities presented themselves,Perez also showed the magnificent horses he was working within IALHA breed shows, where he was a successful competitor.

Now, Perez and his wife, Ruth, (2010 IALHA ProfessionalHorsewoman of the Year) continue to live their dreams andfollow their mutual passion for Iberian horses and traditionalhorsemanship at the Iberian training facility that they owntogether, The Art of Riding, where they specialize in dressageand doma vaquera.

“We work together, and it has been a dream come true forboth of us,” Perez says. “I want to give a big thank you to allour past and present clients and the IALHA for this honor.”

Joey Perez, the honor is ours. Thank you for being such agreat and long-term ambassador for the breed and the IALHA.

2012 IALHA Youth of the Year:

Chelsea ReedThe recipient of the 2012 IALHA Youth of the Year Award is Chelsea Reed of Groveland, Fla. “Thank you so much for naming meIALHA Youth of the Year,” Reed says. “I am very honored to receive this title.”

Reed literally has spent her life on horseback and comes by her riding ability honestly. Her father, Tom Reed, has been thehead trainer for Medieval Times (currently located in Kissimmee, Fla.) for many years, and her mother, Megan, runs their trainingand breeding business, Lost Art Training Centre.

Reed has long been her parents’ No. 1 assistant. Undertheir tutelage (and later that of Olympian Lendon Gray), herriding skills have increased during the years. Now, at 16, sheassists her parents in breaking the young horses at their farmin Groveland as well as assisting with the ongoing sessions forhorses in training.

Reed and the Qualified P.R.E. Stallion, Kabileño XV, are"best friends" and have shown their way to several USDF AllBreeds Awards, last year winning the USDF Region 3Championship for Third Level, Test 3 (JR/YR).

Spending her summers as a working student for HamptonGreen Farm in Fruitport, Mich., and for Lendon Gray, Reedhas participated successfully in the prestigious D4K (Dressagefor Kids) Horse Show in New York. In the fall of 2012, she andKabileno lived and worked at the Hampton Green Farmfacility in Wellington, Fla., studying with Lendon Gray andRobert Dover. She, of course, rode her favorite breed.

“I love the Andalusian, because they are very willing andhard-working horses that always want to please,” she says.

2012 Volunteer of the Year:

Sherry MohrFrom her early years as a Region 6 Director to her more recent roles asIALHA treasurer, PSL Commission president, chair of the Finance andFundraising Committee, and member of the Elections, Stallion BreedingService Auction, and Marketing committees, Sherry Mohr is one volunteerwho throws her heart into all that she does. Those lucky enough to havemet her in person are probably smiling about now, as they reflect on thisdynamo and all she has brought to the IALHA.

Horses were an important part of Mohr’s early life. “I was born andraised on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of New York, and our onlyform of entertainment after work was completed was our ponies, and thenhorses,” Mohr says. Like so many, Mohr’s horse life was interrupted as shecompleted her formal education.

“When I went off to college I had to sell my best friend, a Spanish-typebuckskin mare named Tesoro,” she says. “After a hiatus of 12 years, working as a nurse and starting a family, and then co-owner of acorporation, my search was on for the perfect partner. I’ve owned everything from mini stud colts toTennessee Walkers, Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Friesians, and Quarter Horses, but they just didn’t fulfill mydream.

“Quite by accident, while searching eBay and winning a bid on a breeding to an Andalusian, mydreams renewed,” Mohr continues. “As luck would have it, I had my first Half-Andalusian foal. I absolutelyfell in love with the breed, and was lucky enough to meet a lady from Scotland who needed a marefoaled out. This became my first purebred. From that moment, on, I have cherished the Andalusian andLusitano, and I love researching the lineage and history. When you read, ‘What dreams are made of,’well, they truly are.”

Mohr describes herself as a proud mom to three wonderful boys and married to a hard-working man,Alfred. “Alfred is an avid dreamer, learner and goal seeker!”

Those of us who know Mohr will not be surprised by her closing remarks: “I love sharing this beautifulbreed and enjoy meeting new enthusiastic IALHA members. A big thank you to all who have enriched mylife. Set your goals high, then set them even higher, and volunteer to help IALHA be the best it can be. I'venever regretted getting involved and meeting so many wonderful people who cherish the Andalusianand Lusitano as I do.”

Sherry Mohr, from all of the IALHA members the world over whom you have helped along the way, ahearty thank you and congratulations on being named the 2012 IALHA Volunteer of the Year.

YEAR END AWARDS

Amateur Horsewoman of the Year:

Tiana Ng HornickelIf you’ve been on Facebook or at the IALHA Nationals in recent years, chances are youinstantly recognize this year’s Amateur Horsewoman of the Year, Tiana Ng Hornickle. Youmight be surprised to hear that she was not born into the horse world, no matter how muchshe may look like she grew up on the back of a fantasy steed.

Ng Hornickel explains that she never dreamed of being involved with horses when shewas a child, “Growing up in the city of Hong Kong, I would have never foreseen owning ahorse in my future, let alone owing horses from such a magnificent breed such as theAndalusian,” she says. “The first Andalusian I had ever ridden was Eclipse, a stallion ownedby Carlos Macias.”

Ng Hornickel met Eclipse and his owner when she was a working student for MarioContreras. She smiles at the memory, “You know how people describe a king’s noble steedthat is ready for your command to charge into battle? That’s how I felt when I was aboard Eclipse. He has the grace of a dancepartner and the heart of a faithful knight, and he taught me how a rider and a horse can melt into one so effortlessly. Needlessto say, I was ‘hooked’ on the breed! I was fortunate enough to compete with Eclipse from time to time, so I got my first taste ofsuccess in the show ring and understood what the breed had to offer.”

In 2008, Ng Hornickel met the horse that she says changed her life. “I set my eyes on Xiomaro for the first time at the MidwestHorse Fair,” she says. “I still remember the exact moment I fell in love. This pure white, extremely tall stallion steps out of his stall, rebelliously flips around his long mane, commanding everyone’s attention. I remember I was thinking to myself, ‘I didn’t know uni-corns existed!’ We were overjoyed when Xiomaro’s previous owner decided to sell him in 2009, and we were given the chanceto own and love this magnificent stallion.”

Since then, Xiomaro has taken Ng Hornickel and all connected with her on an exciting journey in the horse world. Xiomaroperformed in the World Equestrian Games opening ceremony in 2010. In 2011, he was USEF Andalusian Horse of the Year. NgHornickel and Xiomaro attend dressage shows, regional and national breed shows, charity events, parades and horse fairs. Morerecently, Ng Hornickel began running a small breeding operation at home.

“One thing I really enjoyed and never thought I would is raising foals,” says Ng Hornickel. “Andalusian foals are extremelyagile and intelligent. I truly enjoy training and playing with them. Of course, all the winnings from shows they bring us are justpleasant surprise! There’s nothing better than showing off what you love and get rewarded by doing it. I’m very honored to havereceived this award, and I hope I can represent the breed in the best light for years to come.”

Amateur Horseman of the Year:

Henry ConroyThis year’s Amateur Horseman of the Year brings with him a distinctly international flair.

Henry Conroy and his wife, Sheree, own and run Glen Lomond Performance horses in Queensland, Australia. Theyown both an Andalusian stallion, Harmony Hills Ernesto (Ernie), and GL Conquistador, a buckskin Lusitano colt that theybred.

Conroy was first introduced to horses by Sheree in 2002, when he moved from Scotland to Australia. He began ridingat age 40, and was immediately enraptured with the partnership that develops between man and horse. Originally, theybred Quarter Horses, but this changed in 2008, with the purchase of a 3-year-old Andalusian colt. He was shown byConroy soon after and won the Led State Championship. He has continued as Supreme Led Stallion as well as the HighPoint Horse of the Show in the most recent AHAA Queensland Championships.

“When I first started handling an Andalusian, the change from other horses was dramatic,” says Conroy. “I washooked! Even as a young stallion, Ernie showed the endearing traits of an Andalusian. He was intelligent, inquisitive, ashow off and had a desire to please.”

In 2010, Conroy and his wife took the opportunity to travel from Australia to attend the IALHA National show, and wereinvited to take part in several events. “It was an amazing experience to participate at these shows, to meet so manywonderful, friendly people, and to see so many top-quality horses and riders,” Conroy says. “As part of our visit, we spent

some time at the FHD Training Stables under the guidance of two amazing andaccomplished horsewomen, Malen Dell and Francine Dismukes. Here, we hadthe unequaled pleasure of riding and working with superbly trained and giftedAndalusian horses.

“It was an undreamed of experience and absolute privilege to partner somestunning Andalusian horses at these events,” he continues. “I am humbled by mysuccess and attribute it more to the wonderfully trained horses than to my owninput.”

Conroy and his wife enjoyed their time at the 2010 Nationals so much that theyreturned to the United States in 2011, where their friendliness, commitment to thebreed, and consistently solid handling made a large impression on all who metthem. The IALHA would like to congratulate Henry Conroy on being named 2012IALHA Amateur Horseman of the Year.

Breeder of the Year:

Gloriosa FarmsThe IALHA is delighted to name Gloriosa Farms in Celina, Texas, the 2012 Breeder of the Year.

“It was a surprise to be named the 2012 Breeder of the Year, especially since Gloriosa Farms is a small breedingoperation (producing only two to four foals per year),” says owner Dawn Griggs.

Gloriosa Farms began involvement with the Andalusian in 1991, with the purchase of two purebred yearling fillies. The farm’s first foal crop arrived in 1994.

“Over the years, we have actively promoted IALHA and horses of both PRE and PSP bloodlines, and attendedregional horse expos and dressage shows. Chasing points was never important to us, although some of our horses didbecome National Champions (halter or performance),” Griggs says. “We have been active supporters of the NationalShow since 1992 through our participation and more recently by our patronage.”

During the last decade, Gloriosa Farms furthered involvement in the association by holding elected positions aswell as volunteering for committees.

Griggs discussed her farm’s breeding philosophy. “Throughout the years, we’ve continually strived to produceathletic, functional horses that still retain traditional form andtemperament,” she says.

This approach appears to be working well. Four horses bred byGloriosa Farms have garnered significant attention as exhibitionperformers: two with Medieval Times, another in Big Apple Circus (NewYork), with the most famous being Acierto G, officially recognized as anAmbassador for IALHA, whose accomplishments with owner/trainerLaura Amandis are too long to list.

“One of the most gratifying accomplishments has been seeinghorses we’ve bred grow up to do well in USDF shows, especially in thecompetitive North Eastern region,” says Griggs, reflecting on the farm’s20 years of breeding. “We are humbled to be chosen recipient of thisaward.”

Purebred Horse of the Year:

Fantasia del CFantasia del C, IALHA 12456(S) bred by Barbara Currie of Oak Hill P.R.E., isowned and loved by Sarah C. Shechner of Origin P.R.E. Sire – RevoltosoXIV, P.R.E. imported from Spain and sire of conformation and movementchampions. Dam – Gozosa II, imported from Spain, P.R.E. CelebrationNational Champion, Certified in the Book of Merits.

Fantasia is one of those rare beauties that simply takes your breathaway. At 16.2 hands, she is a commanding figure in the show ring, butonly when she begins to move does your heart falter a beat within yourchest. At the end of a lead in the arena, she quite simply floats on air.Her stunning conformation and pearly white coat certainly don’t hurtthe overall picture.

Fantasia truly has been a force to be reckoned with in the show ring, amassing an incredible number of titles since her birth in 2004. As a year-ling, she won her first gold medal and best movement title at the P.R.E.National Championships, but it wasn’t until age 4 (2008) that she truly came into her own as a mature mare and earned her first NationalChampion P.R.E. Mare title against much older and more experienced mares.

In 2011, with Howard Peet as her handler, Fantasia won the Champion Mare title at the IALHA Fiesta of the Spanish Horse in Burbank,Calif. At Celebration, the P.R.E. National Championships in Las Vegas, Fantasia took home the coveted National Champion Mare title forthe second time and best movement in her class under the Spanish judges. Fantasia also won a special award for having the highestmorphology score of any horse at the show. Additionally, Fantasia was presented to three Cria Caballar judges in hand and under sad-dle, and earned the status of “Qualified” under the stringent guidelines of the P.R.E. Mundial Registry.

At the 2011 IALHA Nationals, Fantasia was named Reserve National Champion Andalusian Dressage Sport Horse Breeding Mare andReserve National Champion Andalusian in Dressage at Training Level. In the Spanish Specialty division under a Spanish judge, Fantasiawon her class and best movement, earning the highest morphology score among all horses entered in the Specialty division.

Fantasia narrowly missed the IALHA Champion Sr. Mare title under the American judges, coming home with the Reserve ChampionIALHA Sr. Mare title instead. Perhaps she was simply a bit too tired to take home the top award that day, but, as a result of competing inmultiple categories, Fantasia took home the Reserve National Champion of Versatility Award.

The final day of showing in Texas was a separate ANCCE-sanctioned morphology show, where Fantasia was, again, best in her classfor movement and morphology. Fantasia went on to win the Champion Mare title and had the highest morphology score. Under theSpanish judges in 2011, Fantasia earned the honor of having the highest morphology score every time she was shown.

Her meteoric rise in the show ring and her high standing in the Book of Merits certainly are imposing. But what makes Fantasia trulyspecial is her character. Fantasia loves her people, and is equally excited to snuggle up to new friends. She loves to go for walks aroundthe barn aisles, and stop and meet new people. She’s great on the trails, and never shies away from a new adventure. She also is anincredible ambassador for the Andalusian and P.R.E. and always helps to convert new breed enthusiasts wherever she goes.

Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year:

Karat CFThis year, Karat CF has been recognized as the 2012 Half-Andalusian ofthe Year. Karat CF is a 16.0-hand, 5-year-old Andalusian/KWPN crossgelding by P.R.E. stallion LePanto I (Genil) out of a KWPN Keur Preferentmare, Kourante (Olympic Ferro). Karat CF was bred by CF Andalusians,Shawna Camphaug and Shannon Sluser in Canada.

Karat CF holds the incredible distinction of having been invited tothe Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships to compete asone of 15 5-year-old dressage horses from across the United States. TheMarkel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Program for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-oldhorses promotes the importance of selective breeding and correcttraining of horses in the United States, and encourages participation ofbreeders, riders and trainers of young horses in dressage competition.

The purposes of this program are to encourage the properly struc-tured development of young dressage prospects through the train-ing scale, to identify and recognize outstanding talent and the train-ing of international-caliber horses, and to prepare these horses forfuture careers at the FEI level and participation on U.S. High Performance teams.

Only 15 horses are invited nationally in each age group, and Karat CF, ridden and trained by Petra Warlimont ofLongmont, Colo., and owned by Dianne Stanley of Billings, Mont., competed in August at Lamplight Equestrian Center inWayne, Ill.

During the 2012 show season, Karat CF competed at USEF Licensed Competitions at First Level in the Open DressageDivision in the Denver area, earning the highest dressage score in every class in which he competed. He qualified for theUSDF Regional Championships in his first two dressage tests and was the High Point Lower Level Dressage Horse at AutumnHill Dressage I, Autumn Hill Dressage III, Dressage at the Peak, Rocky Mountain Dressage I and Rocky Mountain DressageII. He has been highly trainable, consistently sound, willing and happy, and is easy for an adult amateur to ride.

Look for this fine, young Half-Andalusian to continue to serve as a wonderful ambassador for the breed for years to come!

Indiano XVIIIBy Lanys Kaye-Eddie

Very sadly, this year a magnificent Spanish horse, INDIANO XVIII, diedat the age of 27 after a productive life. He was bred by don JoaquinConesa, whose farm is Nobleza del Guadiana. Don Joaquin showedthis horse with great success in Spain, winning morphological prizes aswell as functionality.

INDIANO won six gold medals as champion of the breed and, ontwo occasions, was Supreme Champion of Functionality. At one point, more than 60 percent of imported mare bands from this extraordinaryfarm were daughters of this iconic stallion. He represented RomeroBenitez blood and, through that, heavily represented “Bocado” blood, which is probably why he bred so true.

When we heard he was in Mexico on the farm of Federico JimenezSainz, a number of friends travelled there to see him in April 1994. Besideshis extraordinary physical beauty and proud bearing, we were treatedto seeing him move in the arena and were thrilled with the sight.

However, we asked Vaughn Smith to have fun with the stallion outside the arena in the fields and, suddenly, the movement was soextraordinary that none of us could really believe it. This horse had an elasticity of the shoulder, and reach in the rear was almost unbelievable. Westill have the tape of those incredibly magic moments. His fire resulted in the nickname “The Lion of Spain.”

Eventually, we managed to put together a syndicate to acquire this stallion, and he arrived in our country in 1997. After a heavy breedingschedule, it was decided that only the syndicate owners would have access to him for their mares, in order not to have too great an effect fromone single stallion on the stock in the United States. Records show 183 offspring but there were many more that may not have been registered. Thisstallion has proved to be a particularly valuable brood mare sire. He spent time at the facilities of each of the syndicate owners throughout thecountry and, in his later years, lived at Blue Moon Ranch in Gavilon Hills, Calif., where he was the happiest and the most settled.

INDIANO’s passing is a great loss for the P.R.E. in the United States, but his genetic legacy will be found for many generations in some of themost wonderful horses in this country. We wish him green pastures and peace, and we were honored to have him in our lives.

GuarapoBy Lanys Kaye-Eddie with Doug Ramsay

During a visit to the farm of Federico JimenezSainz, we purchased this 6-month-old colt,GUARAPO, born the son of GENIL, a legendarybeauty and champion of Spain, and his dam, awonderful black mare named INTRUSA II, from thefarm of Maria Fernanda de la Escalera. I wasparticularly thrilled that Federico was prepared tosell him to us, as he was one of only two blackoffspring of GENIL.

Of all the horses we have been around,GUARAPO was the most sensitive, the most gentleand the most anxious to please. He was shown anumber of times but was a bit intimidated by theatmosphere of a show. He was trained and shownby Vaughn Smith. He covered many mares inCalifornia and produced some lovely foals, manyof whom exhibited that extraordinary long andshapely neck he inherited from his sire.

GUARAPO was purchased by Kim Elliott, after which he travelled to South Carolina. After he had been gone foryear or more, I visited him in his stable at one of the shows in Texas, thinking he would remember our wonderfulrelationship. But even more wonderful was the fact that he was looking over my shoulder for Kim, with whom he nowhad a great relationship. Our condolences go out to Kim, Anne and Derrick Peak, and trainer Sharon Knight.
