Principal’s Report
College Captains 2020 Over the past 12 months or so, the suggestion of changing the timing of the selection and announce-ment of our College Captains has been discussed. Currently, the College has no formal student leadership from week 3 of Term 4, with the end of Year 12 formal classes. This leaves the College without Captains for up to 2 months and our Current Captains should be solely focussed on their upcoming end of year assessment in Term 4. The selection process for the Captains is also conduct-ed at one of their busiest times of the year in Term 4, when again their focus should be on their up-coming exams. It has been decided to trial undertaking the selection process during Term 3, with an announcement prior to the end of the term. The Captains will then assume the responsibility until the end of Term 3. Students have been provided with the process, and expectations of the role, and we will be calling for applications/nominations by the end of week 5. Students out of Uniform We are currently having a focus on uniform. If there is a reason for a student being out of uniform, could you please provide them with a note. Whether they have a note or not, all students who are out of uniform are required to obtain a uniform pass from the Assistant Principal. Students who do not follow this basic instruction will be required to undertake a lunchtime detention. If there is an extended reason why your child may be out of uniform, could you please provide details in your note. As a College, we are willing and able to help families who may not be able to afford an item of uniform. Please contact either Vanessa McCormick or Rosanne Chapman at the College if you would like further information. Broader Horizons Our Year 9 students began their participation in the Broader Horizons program this week. Over the next few weeks, students will be spending time at either East Wimmera Health, the Northern Gram-pians Shire or a number of farming and agricultural businesses. This program was first formed in St. Arnaud and has been copied by a number of other areas around the state. It is aimed at raising student awareness of the wide range of employment possibilities and prospects in our local area, many of which students may never have known about or thought of. We are very fortunate to have the support of the North Central LLEN and the businesses in and around St. Arnaud that enable this wonderful opportunity for our students. MDI Data Collection Students in Year 8 are being asked to participate in the Middle Years Development Index. This sur-vey, which has been conducted in many schools across the state – particularly focussing on students in Years 5 and 8, is a continuation from the early Years Development Index and will provide a widely used data set to help inform not only some areas of teaching, but also identify possible strengths and weaknesses in service provision across the community. Parents should be receiving letters regarding the upcoming survey, and I encourage everyone to take part so that accurate data can be collected. Victorian State School Spectacular Students from both the Secondary and Primary schools participated in their final local training ses-sion this week, prior to heading off to Melbourne for the major performance on September 14. A great deal of work has gone into the event and I am sure that all students and the staff are becoming quite excited and nervous about the big shows. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Expressions of interest are still open for the October 16 performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with the cost of the ticket and travel only being $90. At this stage we have a number of tickets left, and if all of our tickets are not used up, they will be offered to students from the Primary School who are currently on a waiting list. Studio Arts Excursion
On Tuesday 23rd July, the Year 11 and 12 Studio Art students travelled to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery for the VCE Day, which focussed specifically on Outcome 3: Art Industry Contexts. The students explored the exhibition, Paintings from Hamilton. This exhibition showcases the perma-nent collection from the Hamilton Gallery Collection which is renowned for its outstanding holdings of Australian and International decorative arts, sculpture and painting. The selection of paintings for this exhibition reflect the way an artist’s vision shapes how we see our landscape and interpret the world around us. In the workshops, students responded to exhibition artworks, took a behind the scenes tour of the Collection Storeroom and looked at the key roles and functions within the gallery. The students also received a pack of materials to support their on-going study in the Art Industry contexts. It was very beneficial for students to see how artworks are delivered to a gallery, how they are stored while in the collection or while being rested and the process of how an exhibition is planned and executed from a curator’s point of view. This is an essential requirement for the Studio Art Unit 4 end of year exam. The exhibition is still running until Sunday 18th August and is a great ex-hibition to go and see if you are in Horsham before then.

Last week was a very busy week for our Hands On Learning students with the Orchard being fully planted.
Students worked all day levelling and digging out holes for the fruit trees, with a planting of a total of 15
different trees. Students then started covering the area with bark chip to keep down weeds and increase the
appeal of the area. Although not quite finished with the bark chips, students are sure to have the Orchard
fully completed next week, in time to show off for the College Open Day.
A big thank you to Tom Hamilton, who assisted the students with digging the holes and planting the trees.
The Hands on Learning Students and the whole College community wish to thank the following people who
have donated to the project, which will hopefully benefit the College for many years to come:

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Note the date on your calendar and get
organised!
16thto 21st September - last week of Term 3
All Year 10’s are expected to organise their own work
experience during the week of 16th to 21st September. If it is
not possible during this week, then work experience could be
organised during the following two weeks in the holiday period.
We encourage students to search for a much wider experience than their regular
workplace, if they have one, and hope this opportunity allows them to encounter
a workplace that a student may otherwise not have the opportunity to
experience. Dream big!
For further support please

Reynolds or

Mitch Competes at State Cross Country
On Thursday 18th July, Mitch Birthisel travelled down to Bun-doora to compete in the State Cross Country Championships. Mitch ran a fantastic time of 19 minutes and 11 seconds over the 5km course, placing him 69th out of 100 competitors, which just goes to show how strong the com-petition is. Congratulations Mitch on a great effort and represent-ing the College well!
