THE GOOD SAMARITAN

Fr. Sergio G. Román Jesus speaks in parables. A parable is a story invented, but drawn from the experience of the daily life common to those who listen and who learn, and who have consequences. That is the peasants and the simple people of the village talked. Jesus talked in this way because he himself was a farmer, a humble worker who earned the bread with the work of his hands and because those who listened to him where like him. The parable of the Good Samaritan helped Jesus explain who our neighbor is and how we have mercy for him. At the same time he helped him to reproach to the priests and scribes their lack of love for our neighbor and to highlight that mercy can occur even among those who are considered enemies, as in the case of the Samaritan that certainly was not well seen by the Jews. We are surprised at the present of the parables of Jesus and how to continue to apply them to our current circumstances. We are portrayed in the characters of the story, in their attitudes and even in their circumstances, and therefore the moral message remains valid for us. What character do we identify with? Maybe with the man attacked, something so frequent in our days, and then we will remember with gratitude the attention that a good samaritan gave to us. Those that are missing in this society in spite of being so dehumanized. The help we receive many times is not of those who have an obligation to give it to us, but people who act out of compassion and with a generosity that goes beyond what one can expect. These good Samaritans return the faith in humanity. Hopefully we will not get to identify ourselves with those who have to be good by profession and are not, as the priest and he writes the parabola. Hopefully we identify with the Good Samaritan who treated his neighbor as he would have wanted to be treated in the same circumstances. Be a Good Samaritan means walk through this world with eyes wide open to discover the misfortune of others in order to remedy it according to our possibilities. It is not easy, especially because many our neighbors pretend to have a need to take advantage of us and that has made us to be distrustful. How much damage will the false needy have on us! Let us pray to God that our heart does not harden before the pain of our brothers and that we are not indifferent to our fallen neighbor. It is better to be deceived than to leave a person in real need. When we are merciful we seem like our Father in heaven.

Jesús habla en parábolas. Una parábola es un relato inventado, pero sacado de la experiencia de la vida diaria común a los que escuchan y del cual se saca una enseñanza, una consecuencia. Así platican todavía los campesinos y la gente sencilla del pueblo. Jesús platica así porque él mismo es un campesino, un humilde trabajador que gana el pan con el trabajo de sus manos y porque los que lo escuchan son como él. La parábola del buen samaritano le sirvió a Jesús para explicar quién es nuestro prójimo y cómo debemos tener misericordia de él. Al mismo tiempo le sirvió para reprochar a los sacerdotes y a los escribas su falta de amor al prójimo y para resaltar que la misericordia puede darse

incluso entre aquellos que se consideran enemigos, como en el caso del samaritano que ciertamente no era bien visto por los judíos. Nos sorprende la actualidad de las parábolas de Jesús y cómo siguen aplicándose a nuestras actuales circunstancias. Nos vemos retratados en los personajes del relato, en sus actitudes y hasta en sus circunstancias, y, por lo tanto, el mensaje moral sigue siendo válido para nosotros. ¿Con qué personaje nos identificamos? A lo mejor con el hombre asaltado, algo tan frecuente en nuestros días, y entonces recordaremos con gratitud la atención que nos dio algún buen samaritano de esos que no faltan en esta sociedad a pesar de estar tan deshumanizada. La ayuda la recibimos muchas veces no de los que tienen obligación de dárnosla, sino de personas que actúan por compasión y con una generosidad que va más allá de lo que se pueda esperar. Estos buenos samaritanos nos regresan la fe en la humanidad. Desde luego, ojalá no lleguemos a identificarnos con los que tienen que ser buenos por oficio y no lo son, como el sacerdote y el escriba de la parábola. Ojalá nos identifiquemos con el buen samaritano que trató a su prójimo como él hubiera querido ser tratado en las mismas circunstancias. Ser buen samaritano significa caminar por este mundo con los ojos bien abiertos para descubrir la desgracia ajena para poder remediarla de acuerdo con nuestras posibilidades. No es fácil, sobre todo porque muchos prójimos nuestros fingen tener necesidad para aprovecharse de nosotros y eso nos ha hecho ser desconfiados. ¡Cuánto daño nos hacen los falsos necesitados! Pidámosle a Dios que nuestro corazón no se endurezca ante el dolor de los hermanos y que no pasemos indiferentes ante nuestro prójimo caído. Más vale ser engañados a dejar de socorrer a un verdadero necesitado. Cuando somos misericordiosos nos parecemos a nuestro Padre del cielo.
