Effective Parent Governance

This course aims to give Parent Governors confidence and clarity about their role in Governance.

It will give the opportunity to learn about and discuss roles and responsibility and look at suitable

behaviours and conduct. It will explain jargon and the structure of governance and the role Parent

governors play. The course will reflect on common misconceptions of the role and address the

challenges specifically faced by Parent Governors. This course is suitable for parent governors

that have been in role for a number of years and for new parent governors that have completed

the Introduction to Governance course.

The course will enable Parent governors to be effective in sharing their views, and in

understanding how best to support the work of their Governing Board

CURRICULUM: Monitoring Recovery and Planning

Friday 13 November 2020, 10.00am - 12.00 noon (virtual)

As schools continue to reopen more widely, one area of real concern is ensuring that the

curriculum being provided allows pupils to catch up on the topics and skills that they have

missed and continue to progress. Ofsted expects governors to have knowledge of the

curriculum that is being taught in their schools, the reasons why it has been chosen and how it

meets the specific needs of the children attending the school and so reduce inequality.

This course will look at the overall curriculum requirements and ways in which governors can

both plan for the future and assess the suitability and quality of the recovery curriculum that is

being delivered.

ACADEMY GOVERNANCE:

Thursday 26 November 2020, 6.00pm - 8.00pm (virtual)

Academy governance has differences from governance in the maintained

sector. Whilst the principles of governance do not vary, there are some distinct differences and

it is important to know what is specific about governing an academy.

This session will explore what academy governance is about, the legal responsibilities of a

Trust, the layers of delegation and the additional duties resulting from charitable status.

It will include recommendations from the National Governance Association on the most effective

systems and the different roles and responsibilities of the various layers of governance in multi

academy trusts (MATs).

CHAIRING THE BOARD: course for current & potential chairs.

2 parts:

Tuesdays 24 November & 1 December 2020, 6.00pm-8.30pm (virtual)

Over this 2 x 2½ hour course, new Chairs and potential Chairs will be

introduced to the behaviours and practices needed for effective Chairing. This course will also

be useful to vice-chairs and chairs of committees and will look at 4 key areas:

Leading Effective Governance

Building the Team

Relationship with the Headteacher and Executive Leaders

Leading the Business An effective Chair is responsible for leading the work of the Governing Board including

maintaining a focus on the strategic direction of the school. Practical tools will be shared to

support the role and the course will include the role of the chair in leading the governing body in

meetings and building an effective team; developing the governing board and effective practice

in order to drive school improvement over the year; working effectively with the Head Teacher

and executive leaders; developing a shared vision and strategic decision making; and

succession planning.

The course will give governors the opportunity for self-reflection and personal action planning.

DATA: Evaluating and Using Data to Monitor Progress

Thursday 20 August 2020, 4.30pm-6.30pm (virtual)

Or

Tuesday 29 September 2020, 6.00pm-8.00pm (virtual)

This session will look at the substitution of internal data for external data this academic

year, the validation of it and the types of data which would best assist governors in both

their monitoring role and in setting targets for recovery from lockdown.

It will also look at effective monitoring techniques that governors can use moving forward

towards the resumption of publicised data in the summer of 2021 and include any

government updates on its use.

HEADTEACHER PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Wednesday 23 September 2020, 6.00pm-8.00pm (virtual)

Governors are required to undertake Head Teachers Performance Management and this course,

led by a Lead Achievement Officer, will guide governors in completing this effectively.

The Effective Performance Management of the Headteacher is one of the most important roles

for Governors in ensuring the proper management of the school and the outcomes for the

children.

Appraisal for other staff should be linked to this process and the rigorous process followed

should enable governors to ensure that they are performing their role of holding the Headteacher

to account for the Educational performance of the school and the performance management of

other staff.

HANDLING COMPLAINTS

Tuesday 3 November 2020, 6.00pm – 8.00pm (virtual)

This course is essential for experienced governors, Chairs & Vice Chairs of governing boards.

The course will assist you in managing complaints confidently at each stage of the process

within the DfE guidance framework. Parents and members of the community can make a

complaint about any facilities or services that a school provides.

You will be reflecting on the procedures that you currently have in place, whether your policy

encourages good home-school relationships and how feedback from concerns that are raised

can inform school improvement. The course does not cover staff grievances.

This course aims to share and encourage best practice and help schools avoid common pitfalls.

New for 2020-2021

Networks

The School Governor Service (SGS) has been looking at ways to provide support

for Governors and Trustees so that they can undertake their roles effectively and

share good practice with one another. As a result, in Autumn 2020 and Spring

2021 three different Networks will be established, each focussed on a specific

area of governance. These Networks will be facilitated by one of the SGS officers

with good background knowledge of that area, who will pull together any relevant

updates and facilitate the sessions, which will be online (at least initially). If the

Networks prove popular then from April 2021 there will be three meetings of each

Network per year for a small annual subscription.

Chairs’ Network

Tuesday 10 November 2020 and Tuesday 9 March 2021

both 6.00pm – 7.30pm (virtual)

Join this Chair’s Network for facilitated termly support from your peers; to hear about and

discuss current challenges; to gain clarity and direction on effective board management.

The role of Chair of a governing board is complex and there are many topics that Chairs may

wish to consider and where the views and experiences of other Chairs would be helpful.

This network will give an opportunity to Chairs to discuss topical issues and inform their

planning for the future.

It will be facilitated by one of the SGS Officers who will circulate information for the session

before the meeting as appropriate. This Network is suitable for Chairs, Vice Chairs and

Committee Chairs.

Governors will be able to raise topics for discussion prior to each termly session.

Booking for the Network is essential: one booking for two sessions.

Safeguarding & Vulnerable Groups Governors’ Network

Tuesday 17 November 2020 & Tuesday 2 March 2021

both 6.00pm – 7.30pm (virtual)

This network is aimed at those governors with a focus on or who are

Named governors for Safeguarding, Pupil Premium &/or SEND.

The Network session will look at topics of interest in each of those areas so that good

practice can be shared and new initiatives or information discussed. The meeting will be held

virtually with the opportunity for governors to meet in smaller groupings for discussion. It will

be facilitated by the School Governor Service Officers who will circulate information for the

session before the meeting.

Governors will be able to raise topics for discussion prior to the session. The Network

session will be held termly. Booking is essential: one booking for two sessions.

PUPIL PREMIUM, SPORTS PREMIUM & Other additional funds/grants.

Monday 30 November, 6.00pm – 8.00pm (virtual)

Governors are specifically tasked with ensuring that Pupil Premium is used to support the

disadvantaged children attending their school, so that those children can progress and achieve

to the best of their ability. The ways in which this is done will vary according to the needs of the

pupils at the school and should be based on evidence of effectiveness. Governors at Primary

Schools are also expected to monitor the use and impact of the Sports Premium. The criteria for

its use are different but the same monitoring approach is needed and the course will look at

ways in which evidence of effective use can be judged.

In addition there are now additional funds allocated to schools to assist with the catch up work

that schools are putting into place over the next year, much of this is also for work with

disadvantaged pupils. The course will look at the areas where this funding will be used and look

at the systems that can be used to monitor its impact.

WELL-BEING & MENTAL HEALTH:

A Governor’s Role

Monday 24 August 2020 4.30pm-6.30pm (virtual) Or Thursday 22 October 2020, 6.00pm-8.00pm (virtual) This course will support Governors with practical tips for governance.

Governors will be aware that mental health and well-being in schools is now more prominent. Governors will gain an understanding through this course about their role in planning for and monitoring this aspect of education.

The course will give practical examples of how governors can be involved without straying into operational activities. This course focuses on the Governance role, it supports governors in their understanding of the subject and where to find further information related to schools and Ofsted.

The Department for Education supports governors’ promotion of the well-being of pupils and DfE guidance for Governors also highlights information and guidance for Governors to support the well-being of staff.

SAFEGUARDING Wednesday 26 August 2020, 2.00pm - 4.00pm (virtual) or

Monday 12 October 2020, 6.00pm - 8.00pm (virtual)

Governors have an important role in monitoring and ensuring staff and pupils are safe. This

course will enable governors to be aware of their role in monitoring the effectiveness of schools

in keeping children safe from harm and will take account of the latest Keeping Children Safe in

Education guidance.

The discussion and information provided will assist governors in understanding the different

areas of concern and ensure that these are addressed effectively by the systems and practices

of their school and will explain the remit of the Named Governor.

SEND: The Role of Governors

Friday 6 November 2020, 10am – 12 noon (virtual)

SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) is the term used for

children who need some form of additional support to enable them to progress in their learning.

Additional funding is received specifically for children with needs above a certain level and there

is also a portion of the school’s base budget allocated to SEND. Much of the funding is often

spent on staff salaries.

All governors need to have an understanding of SEND to ensure that they can effectively

monitor the progress and achievement of SEND children in their school and the impact of

spending. This course aims to give governors the information that they need to undertake these

tasks. It will also explore the role of SEND Named Governor.
