Introduction
Welcome to the re-launch issue of And The Winner Is… magazine brought to you by the founder of EDI, the company that pioneered overnight box office reporting to Hollywood and the world. We began publishing our Oscar tip sheet in 1988 on newsprint, like the Racing Form. After 24 years of Oscar research and a two year hiatus, we are back with a beautiful new look. Our ‘little’ idea to handicap the Oscars had quite a big impact on Academy Awards reporting. We were the first to quantify how much money was at stake for Best Picture winners, and what trends actually pointed to the Oscar winners. Our analysis, sent to broadcast and print media, Hollywood insiders and Academy partygoers, has had quite an impact on awards reporting. Of the very few Oscar publications out there, we are consistently the most accurate. We never miss a beat. When looking at the race pages, if its gold it will help the win and if its gray it will hurt the chances of winning. This year, Dave Swartz, or ‘Price Waterhouse’ and CPA extraordinaire weighted each trend in each category so our predictions are also mathematically sound. Show us how smart you are. Talk to us over our blog (andthewinnerismag.wordpress.com), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/And-The-Winner-Is-Magazine/174584915964703) and follow us on Twitter (twitter.com/winnerismag). Stay tuned to us all year long by reading our ultra crisp TALK TO ME movie reviews – much better than talking to a friend about whether you’d like to see a movie. We will be launching a big contest for next year’s Oscar pool and launching other ONCE A YEAR titles on topics of vital interest to us all. Our Oscar Night Menus (p.25), and party planning suggestions provide the most creative ideas for your Oscar night get-togethers. Click on the “parties’ link at our website (www.winnerismagazine.com) to download the recipes. Happy Handicapping!Marcie Polier2012

Even though theatrical box office is up worldwide, admissions and box office gross continue a slow decline in the U.S. Our Oscar Winner 10-year averages are down by about 8% over the averages from 2009 when we did our last in depth dive into Oscar’s Box Office momentum. The new 10-year average for dollars generated from the Best Picture’s release to the nominations announcement is $86.7 million, down from $104.6 two years ago. The new 10-year average for dollars generated from the nominations
THE NUMBERS
announcement to the win is $32.8 million, up 13.5% from two years ago. The new 10-year average for dollars generated from after the win to the end of the run is $18.1, up 11% from two years ago. So our Average Best Picture Winner grosses a domestic total of $137.6 which is down from $149.8 two years ago. Not too bad considering all the changes facing Hollywood today, technology, piracy, recession and global trends to name the obvious few.

*Subjective factors are always positive because when a nominee wins an Oscar, it is due to a positive reason.** There were only 30 $100 million dollar grossing films out of the 613 films released in 2011which is another reason Oscar’s business is as important as his art…

ACADEMY AWARD Ballot
You are a yackety-yacker on Oscar night… You must have your most opinionated friends sitting on the couch next to you, commenting on every detail. Nothing escapes your eagle eyes whether it be bad plastic surgery or a bumbled line. The food must be
très bon, so let two French-themed films and one French-made movie -- “Midnight in Paris,” “Hugo” and “The Artist” -- set the culinary tone. Who could experience The City of Lights and not yearn for a perfect French meal washed down with fine French wine? Micheline Hebert, head chef and owner of Brentwood’s beloved Chez Mimi (go to www.winnerismagazine.com for Chez Mimirecipes) (after 13 years on 26th Street, she is planning to open in a new location later this year), agrees completely. When she’s hosting an awards-show viewing party at home, Hebert always makes sure her guests never number more than 8 and that they can serve themselves so she can enjoy the show. Her preferred make-ahead meal in honor of a French film consists of all French classics: Salade Niçoise, Cold Poached Salmon with Dill Sauce and rich, creamy Pot de Chocolat Facile -- which translates to easy chocolate pots.
Fantastique, mais oui?
You are a crowd pleaser… You are not happy unless there is a crowd around, and the bigger the better. The show is blaring from every TV in the house, and your crowd
will linger all the way through to the interview shows afterwards, but the party is the real star. And what better movie to take this year’s big bash inspiration from the “The Descendants.” Hawaiian pu pu’s on a grand scale….

Who are you on Oscar night? Find your personality below and then plan your Cocktail Party, In Crowd Evening, Opinionated Evening, Oscar Bash, or Cozy Home Alone event with our suggested Oscar nominated movie-themed menus…. ALL OUR MENUS ACCOMPANIED BY THE RECIPES CAN BE FOUND AT www.winnerismagazine.com(www.winnerismagazine.com/menus.html).
You love to drink with the best of them and Oscar night is the best excuse there is for a cocktail party, food be damned. This year there is only one choice… “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’s” office party punch. Remember Control’s disapproval?
“It’ll take us five hours to get drunk on this monkey’s piss!” Our punch will punch up cocktail hour and if you must have something to eat you can make our favorite tapas. Catalan toast with charcuterie, Spanish olives, ratatouille and Russian salad co-starring as the sides…what could be easier or better than that?
You are a know-it-all “in-crowd” person… You wouldn’t be caught dead actually attending the Oscars, unless forced to by a nominated friend. You have to watch so you can be brilliant tomorrow, but you have to stay detached because too much enthusiasm is just sub
rosa in Hollywood. You must take your menu cues from the movie with the most controlling in-the-know characters of the year, those southern belles from “The Help” who knew good food when they smelled it and knew who to hire to cook it! Roasted ham and fried chicken accompanied by coleslaw, biscuits and corn bread; sweet tea and lordy – don’t forget that chocolate pie! No one will want to leave this party. Brian Lourd, move over…our fried chicken is better than yours…

You are a jammies and fuzzy slippers Oscar watcher… Only your family and closest friends are allowed in the room, and everyone has to be quiet, even during the commercials. You will
be sending the kids to Grandma’s so you can put all your attention on every delicious televised or other tidbit.… You simply must take your menu inspiration from “The Iron Lady” and serve a traditional English afternoon tea. Take a cue from The Peninsula Beverly Hills, whose elegant teas are legendary east and west of the 405. Enthrall your guests with Coronation Chicken tea sandwiches. Peninsula Executive Chef James Overbaugh points out that the chicken recipe was actually created for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. Margaret Thatcher would be so proud. Follow up with Orange Scones, another Peninsula mainstay, accompanied by Devonshire cream and raspberry preserves. Then wash it all down with a Pimm’s Cooler cocktail and turn your meal into what Overbaugh calls “ a real tribute to English tea.” Indeed!
