“TAKE A SOLDIER/VETERANS/ACTIVE DUTY
FISHING” 2019 events in Oregon:
The next Take A Veteran/Active Duty Military Fishing Event at Henry Hagg is fast
approaching. Presently, we have 15 boats and volunteers with a capacity of 32 persons and
57 persons desiring to go fishing.
If you know of anyone who is willing to take some veterans/active duty military fishing
for the day in their boat for trout or bass/panfish, we would love to have them register.
Thank you. Take a Soldier Fishing (TASF), Portland Chapter, is proud to announce two 2019 events to take veterans
and active duty military out fishing for the day. TASF’s goal is to provide low cost or free fishing events honoring our active duty military and veterans
from any branch of the service. We serve veterans with various disabilities, veterans supported by the VA Housing Programs, and many others from all walks of life.
For some veterans, our event is the only outdoor recreational activity that they will receive the entire year!
All veterans and active duty military are welcome to participate in our events. We do our best to provide accommodations for those who need them. We are seeking Volunteers with boats who have fishing gear to take veterans fishing.
o Volunteers are needed to help with check-in of boaters and participants and issue fishing licenses for those who need them
o Volunteers are needed for setup and take down and help with serving AM refreshments o Volunteers are not required to have served in the military Lunch and AM refreshments are provided for all participants and volunteers
Fishing from a boat or from the bank is available at most events. Some events also permit immediate
family members to participate. Participants and volunteers/boaters must pre-register for these events. Go to
www.takeasoldierfishing.org and complete the appropriate registration form.
TASF has no paid employees. Everyone is a volunteer, including board members, who have a passion to
recognize our veterans and active duty military for their sacrificies.

The Few, The Proud,
The Bank Fish Along Participants
Jim Cathcart
In an effort to extend fishing opportunity in a
learning environment for recent graduates from the
Chapter’s November 2018 Steelhead Fishing 101
Workshop, I had the pleasure of hosting monthly
winter steelhead Bank Fish Along s from December
2018 through April 2019! In total, we had 20
participants – an average of 4 for each event --
including veteran Chapter members who joined in!
All outings were to Oxbow Regional Park’s Flood
Plain which provides plenty of good water to
spread out and fish all the techniques one uses to
chase winter steel: drift fishing, float fishing, bobber
dogging, plunking and spinner/spoons.
Plunking the flood plain
We fished in a variety of conditions ranging from the delightful (for winter fishing), to
high water; to low, clear and below freezing, ice in the guides COLD! Overcast skies,
showers, sun breaks and wind – all were a part of the conditions we braved. The common
thread to all these outings was building new fishing relationships, sharing knowledge and
providing encouragement. Winter steelhead are the fish of 1,000 casts and to the beginner
1,000 probably feels like 10,000. Steelhead encounters were absent in the December,
January, February and March outings. Lightning struck in April. New member Marvin
crackered a shot of chrome winter steel almost immediately. Then yours truly ended a two
year winter steelhead drought with a bright native landed and released; drift fishing old
school – corky and eggs. Other encounters on earlier trips included suckers (the fish, not
fisher), pike minnow and the now resident big white sturgeon that calls the flood plain home.

All these events start with an optional
breakfast at long-time newsletter sponsor, Dea’s In
and Out restaurant in Gresham. Nothing like a
hearty meal and plenty of coffee at “O Dark Thirty”
to get the juices of optimism flowing for a day’s
fishing. I think that is what I enjoy the most about
these events – talking fishing and getting to know
fellow Steelheaders.
You are all invited to join in! The next Bank Fish-
Along events resume in September and October
where we will be chasing finicky Coho salmon. The
dates are Saturdays, September 21st and October
5th. Email me at [email protected] to
register. Until then, tight lines.
Success!

Change in membership dues
Some time ago, I gave you advance notice of upcoming ANWS membership rate
changes. This month Tom Vanderplaat, President ANWS sent an email to Chapter Presidents
and others stating, “Dues increases to $30 for membership and single category to make it
simple. I will be writing a letter to the membership regarding the change for July 1.” Once
this is sent out we will post it under our chapter websites “Breaking News” section.
