The team at Tom Pigeon love playful geometric design and this project was an exciting opportunity not only to explore this aspect of their practice but also to investigate the historic colour palettes and classic patterns from the V&A collections. Taking inspiration from domestic Victorian hallways, they started to play with modern interpretations of traditional square and border tiles.

They fell in love with the rich dark greens, soft mint, rose pinks, charcoal and powder blue of classic Victorian tiles and the endless combinations of original encaustic floor tiles. They knew that this was an opportunity to create a playful experience, one that is exciting for the user, allowing them to create something unique and personal.

Traditional tile motifs have been pared back to simple geometric forms – taking a decorative tile and paring it back to a minimal ‘dot’ or simplifying a shield or crested tile back to an ‘arc’ or abstracted ‘apex’ design. This created a series of tiles which could be used in all kinds of ways.

In playing with this collection of tiles, Tom Pigeon have reinterpreted traditional vestibule wall patterns with repeating borders and panels of flat colour, and created more modern abstract options which feel more like fragments of colour and shape. You could also tessellate the same tile to create new motifs and repeat patterns.

The possibilities are endless.

ARRANGE is a white bodied, ceramic wall tile collection of five geometric designs available in seven colours which can be used alongside coloured square and rectangular tiles. The colours have a subtle gloss finish to contrast with the matt of the cool grey. The designs are bold yet simple and can be used in infinite combinations to create a huge array of contemporary or more traditional patterns.

Each individual tile is treated as a piece of art with every tile being carefully selected, before being hand decorated by highly experienced artisans using traditional lithographic prints. The craft process of traditional lithography offers a depth, precision and durability of colour unattainable by other decorative processes. Bespoke production runs of coordinating glazed tiles complete the range.
