And the Emmy Goes to…
On August 16th, the Crea8ve Arts Emmy Award Ceremony was held in Los Angeles at the Nokia Center.
The awards honor, mostly, the behind the scenes talent, such as art directors, cinematographers, cas8ng
directors, and the like.
The Crea8ve Emmys also award guest actor appearances in
prime8me.
The Crea8ve Arts Emmys, in comparison to the Prime8me Emmys, is only a slightly less
extravagant affair.
The red carpet is s8ll populated with a who’s who of television, only its
people behind the camera.
A category of par8cular interest is Outstanding Commercial.
5 commercials from 4 agencies were nominated.
Anomaly had two nomina8on, both for collabora8ons with Budweiser
for ads for the Super Bowl.
The first adver8sement, “A Hero’s Welcome” told the story of a
soldier’s emo8onal return home where he was greeted by not only a loving wife, a caring family and a
grateful town, but also the Budweiser Clydesdales.
The second ad by Anomaly nominated is the aptly 8tled, “Puppy
Love”, depicted the unbeatable friendship between a Clydesdale and a rambunc8ous labrador puppy.
BBDO was acknowledged for their work with GE.
The ad, called “Childlike Imagina8on” is a young girls crea8ve idea about what her mother, who works for GE, does everyday.
The fanciful ad features CGI heavily.
The fourth nominated ad is produced by MJZ through Weiden &
Kennedy for Nike, called “Possibili8es”.
The piece urges the everyday athlete to strive for greatness and to push
their limits.
Narrated by Bradley Cooper with cameos by Lebron James and Serena
Williams, the ad is certainly not lacking star-‐power.
The final ad nominated, and ul8mately the winner, is by TBWA/
Media Arts Lab and Apple.
“Misunderstood” tells the story of a seemingly shy, disinterested teen at
a family Christmas.
The boy appears to be tagging along for his parents sake but is mostly
glued to his phone.
On Christmas morning, he reveals that he was been crea8ng a lovely video montage of the vaca8on, rendering his family members to
puddles of tears and pride.
The commercial is the second Emmy win for Apple’s ad work.
The first came in 1998 during their now iconic, “Think Different”
campaign.
The Tom Wait’s narrated piece was a celebra8on of forward thinkers: “Here’s to the Crazy Ones.”
Overall, this year we saw some very high quality commercials.
The studios responsible for them were able to expand the kinds of
story telling that effec8vely promote a product.
It surely was a difficult decision for the academy.
Congratula8ons to TBWA/Media Arts Lab and Apple for their truly fantas8c commercial and well-‐
deserved Emmy!
