THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD—January 1, 2017, Year A THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Num-bers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness.

SAINT ELIZABETH SETON

St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was the first native born American to be canon-ized by the Catholic Church. She was a young widow, a mother of five

children, and a convert to the faith from Protestantism. Yet she became the foundress of the first religious order in The United States: The Sisters of Charity, and helped establish the first free Catholic school in America (in Maryland). The sisters also established two orphanages and another school. Today, six groups of sisters can trace their origins to Mother Seton's initial foundation.

Mother Seton died in 1821 at the age of 46. She was canonized on September 14, 1975 by Pope Paul VI.

Her former NYC home is a landmark and a shrine at-tached to the Church of Our Lady of The Holy Rosary (just a little south of us)! You can find a statue of St. Elizabeth Seton in our downstairs chapel with statues of other American saints. Lord God, you blessed Elizabeth Seton with gifts of grace as wife and mother, educator and foundress, so that she might spend her life in service to your people. Through her example and prayers may we learn to ex-press our love for you in love for our fellow men and women. We ask this through Christ our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

MASS SCHEDULE FOR DECEMBER 26TH AND JANUARY 2ND

Because of the holidays there will be only 2 Masses on each of those dates. On Monday, December the 26th and Monday, January 2nd, Masses will be at 8:15 A.M. and 12:15 P.M. only. There will be no Masses at Saint Andrew’s.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

“Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step be-yond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an oc-tave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a con-tinuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circum-cision. MUSIC AT SAINT ANDREW We are happy to inform you that Miss Cynthia Weinrich will be returning to Saint Andrew to play the organ and sing for the 12:10 Masses on The Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, 1/1/17, and the Solemnity of the Epiphany, 1/8/17.

NEW DOORS AT OUR LADY OF VICTORY Three sets of new glass doors were installed at entrance to the church plant and the church itself. Upon my arri-val, several people men-tioned to me something that I had already become aware of, namely, the Church looked like it was closed most of the day. This was primarily due to what had been the main entrance always being dark and closed. With these new doors, people will hopefully realize that our Church is open as it is from 6:45 am to 6:00 pm. Monday-Friday and visit more often. I hope you like them. And doesn’t the new bell system sound great? — Fr. Murphy
