Initial Start-up Instructions

❏❏ Read all assembly, operating, and safety instructions.

❏❏ Complete and return the warranty card to register your log splitter.

❏❏ Write the serial number and date-of-purchase in this manual.

❏❏ Assemble the log splitter.

❏❏ Make sure the hydraulic tank is filled with the recommended type and quantity of oil.(See “Start-Up Procedure” section.)

❏❏ Make sure the engine crankcase is filled with the manufacturer’s recommended typeand quantity of oil. (See “Start-Up Procedure” section.)

❏❏ Fill the engine fuel tank with fresh, clean, lead-free gasoline. (Do not mix oil withgasoline.)

❏❏ Cycle the log splitter cylinders several times to make sure everything is working prop-erly. (See “Start-Up Procedure” section.)

❏❏ Make sure the trailer hitch of the towing vehicle is equipped with a 2 inch ball.

WARNING

Worksite Safety✔ To avoid tripping, do not leave tools, logs, or other components laying around

in the work area.

✘ NEVER operate your log splitter on slippery, wet, muddy, or icy surfaces. Thelocation you choose should be flat, dry, and free from any tall grass, brush,or other interferences.

✘ NEVER operate the engine in an enclosed area. Exhaust fumes contain car-bon monoxide which can be deadly when inhaled. Make sure the area is wellventilated.

✘ NEVER attempt to move your log splitter over hilly or uneven terrain without atow vehicle.

✘ NEVER use your log splitter at night.

✔ ALWAYS operate your log splitter on dry, solid, level ground.

✔ ALWAYS block the wheels to prevent movement of the machine while in operation.

Operating Safety✔ ALLOW ONLY ONE (1) PERSON TO LOAD AND OPERATE THE LOG

SPLITTER.

✔ Allow only adults to operate the log splitter. No one under the age of 18 shouldbe allowed to operate the log splitter.

✔ Always keep bystanders, including children and pets, at least twenty-five (25)feet away from the work area. Only the operator should stand near the equip-ment, and the operator should stand only within the safety zone prescribed inthis manual (see the photos on safe and unsafe operating zones in the “Oper-ation” section.)

✔ When the ram of the log splitter is in the return mode, keep your hands off themachine — the log splitter is designed to automatically stop when the cylinderis fully retracted.

✔ ALWAYS disconnect the spark plug wire when the log splitter is not in operation.

✘ Do not allow any person to operate the log splitter until they have read andunderstood the safe operating instructions contained in this manual.

SafetyThe following is a list of safety rules you must follow in order to use your log split-ter safely.Personal Protection✔ To avoid personal injury or death, carefully read and understand all instruc-

tions pertaining to the log splitter including the engine manufacturer’s oper-ating and maintenance instruction manual.

✔ Always wear protective gear such as safetygoggles, tight-fitting gloves without drawstrings or loose cuffs, steel-toed shoes, and aprotective hearing device.

✔ To prevent injury, make sure all decals are attached to the log splitter andare legible at all times.

✔ ALWAYS check the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank and engine reservoir.Fill as required.

✘ NEVER operate your log splitter when it is in need of repair or is in poormechanical condition.

✘ NEVER tamper with the engine to run it at excessive speeds. The maximumengine speed is preset and is within safety limits.

✘ NEVER make alterations to your log splitter in any manner. Such alterationsmay cause the log splitter to become unsafe and WILL VOID THE WARRAN-TY.

✘ NEVER attach a rope or extension to the control lever or add width or height tothe splitting wedge. Such ALTERATIONS may cause the log splitter to becomeUNSAFE and WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.

✘ ALWAYS clean the unit after each use. If possible, store the unit inside or coverit completely, if stored outside.

Towing✔ ALWAYS check before towing to make certain your log splitter is correctly and

securely attached to the towing vehicle. Be sure that the ball hitch you areusing is the proper size for the hitch coupler on the log splitter (see “Specifi-cation” section). Be sure the safety chains are properly hooked to the vehicleleaving enough slack for turning.

✔ ALWAYS allow for added length of the log splitter when turning, parking, cross-ing intersections, and in all driving situations.

✔ ALWAYS be careful when backing up. You could jackknife your log splitter ifcare is not taken.

✔ ALWAYS disconnect your log splitter from your towing vehicle before attempt-ing to use it.

✘ NEVER exceed 35 m.p.h. when towing your log splitter. Obey all state andlocal regulations when towing on state and local roads and highways. Adjustyour speed for terrain and conditions as needed. Be extra cautious when tow-ing over rough terrain, especially over a railroad crossing.

✘ NEVER tow your log splitter when there is fuel in the engine’s tank.

✘ NEVER allow anyone to sit or ride on your log splitter.

✘ NEVER carry any cargo or wood on your log splitter.

✘ Do not, under any circumstances, alter your log splitter. This equipment wasdesigned and engineered to be used in accordance with the operating instruc-tions. Altering the equipment, or using the equipment in such a way as to cir-cumvent its design capabilities and capacities, could result in serious or fatalinjury and WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.

✘ Never operate, or allow anyone else to operate, this equipment while under theinfluence of medication, drugs, or alcohol.

✘ Never wear loose clothing or jewelry that may get caught or become entan-gled in the log splitter.

✘ NEVER place hands or feet between log and splitting wedge or between logand ram during the forward or reverse stroke.

✘ DO NOT STRADDLE OR REACH ACROSS THE SPLITTING AREA WHENOPERATING THE LOG SPLITTER.

✘ Do not step over your log splitter when the engine is running, because you maytrip or accidentally engage the ram.

✘ NEVER attempt to load your log splitter while the ram is in motion.

✘ Only use your hand to operate the control lever. NEVER use your foot, knee, arope, or any other extension device.

Log Splitting Safety✔ Always keep your fingers away from any cracks that open in the log during the

splitting operation.

✔ ALWAYS make sure that both ends of the log you are splitting are cut as squareas possible. This will prevent the log from sliding out of position while underpressure. Logs should be 24 inches or shorter in length.

✘ NEVER try to split two logs on top of each other.

✘ Never pile logs to be split in a manner that will cause you to reach across thelog splitter.

Maintenance and Repair✔ Follow all safety rules, because most accidents involving the operation, main-

tenance, or repair of products occur because the assembler/owner/operatorfailed to observe basic safety rules or operating instructions.

✔ ALWAYS inspect your log splitter before each use. Make sure all nuts, bolts,screws, hydraulic fittings, hose clamps, etc. are securely tightened.

Shipping ListThe following chart contains the list of parts that should be shipped as part of the BH4099Commercial Log Splitter.

Refueling✔ ONLY refuel the log splitter outdoors in a clear area void of gas fumes or spilled

gasoline.

✔ ALWAYS use an approved fuel container to carry gasoline.

✔ ALWAYS replace the log splitter gas cap and the fuel container cap securely.

✔ If gasoline is spilled, move the machine away from the area of the spill andavoid creating any source of ignition until the spilled gasoline has completelyevaporated.

✔ Take a class B fire extinguisher with you when operating the log splitter in dryareas as a precautionary measure against possible flying sparks.

✔ Always store gasoline in an approved, tightly sealed container. Store the con-tainer in a cool, dry place. Do not store the container in a house or near anyheating appliance.

✘ Do not smoke or have open flames when refueling the engine. Donot spill fuel. If fuel should spill, quickly wipe up the spill and allowthe excess to evaporate before continuing. Make sure gasolinesoaked rags are properly disposed of.

✘ DO NOT fill the gas tank while the engine is hot or running. Allow time for theengine to cool down before refueling.

Preventing Fires✘ NEVER operate the log splitter near a flame or spark. Oil and gasoline are

flammable and can explode.

✘ NEVER smoke while operating or refueling the log splitter. Gasoline, oil, andeven gas fumes can explode.

Important NoticeThe log splitter is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should notbe used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land unless the engine’s exhaust system is equipped with a sparkarrester meeting local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, itshould be maintained in effective working order by the owner and/or operator.

Assembly Procedure

Some components are very heavyand can be damaged if mis-han-dled. Also, to help prevent per-sonal injury, it is strongly recom-mended that two (2) people worktogether to uncrate and assemblethe log splitter.

1. Remove and read all instructions andsafety recommendations beforeassembling or operating this log split-ter.

This log splitter weighs approxi-mately 1000 pounds. Do not standor position yourself under anypart of the log splitter when it israised in the air.

2. Place a sling or chain around the base unitin the position shown and lift it off theground using a lifting device such as anoverhead crane or fork lift. Lift the unit farenough to easily install the wheels.

Unpacking the Crate1. Carefully check the larger components on

the shipping pallet for damage. If the partsare damaged call Iron & Oak Products at (815) 672-8596.

2. Cut the banding straps and open the card-board box to make sure all the smallerparts have been shipped. Do not cut thebanding strap holding the two lift cylinderstogether. The chart in the “Shipping List”section provides a complete list of all theparts shipped with your log splitter. If anyparts are missing call Iron & Oak Productsat (815) 672-8596.

NOTE: The contents of the cardboard boxcontains the hitch assembly, two safetychains, two fenders, and tongue. Also includ-ed in the box is a plastic bag of miscellaneoushardware containing bolts, washers, and nuts.

7. Install the tongue onto the front of the baseunit using four 1/2-13 bolts, 1-1/2 incheslong with lock nuts (3/4” wrench). Secure-ly tighten the nuts.

8. Attach the hitch coupler to the end of thetongue assembly (rear hole) using a1/2-13 x 3 inch long hex head bolt, two flatwashers, and a 1/2-13 locknut. Tightenthe locknut securely.

9. Attach the two towing safety chains to thehitch (front hole) using a 3/8-16 x 3-1/2 inchlong hex head bolt, two flat washers, and alocknut. Tighten the locknut securely.

NOTE: The safety chain should be installedagainst the hitch assembly with the flat wash-ers on the outside of the chain, as shown.

3. Install the wheel assemblies using four lugnuts on each wheel. Securely tighten thelug nuts using a ratchet wrench and a13/16” socket.

4. Pull the release pin and position jackassembly with wheel in the down position.Lock the wheel assembly in place.

5. The log splitter can now be set on theground for the remaining assembly. As aprecaution, block the wheels to preventmovement of the log splitter during theremaining assembly.

6. Bolt the fenders onto the fender bracketsusing two 5/16-18 x 1 inch long hex headbolts and 5/16-18 locknuts (1/2” wrench).The fenders are interchangeable (left orright). Position the fender over the tire withequal spacing in the front and back.

To prevent personal injury, care-fully lower the log lift by hand. Donot place your fingers under thelog lift where they can be pinchedwhen the log lift is lowered.

12. The log splitter is now completely assem-bled. Follow the “Start-Up Procedure” inthe following section before trying to startthe engine.

CAUTION

CAUTIONTo prevent personal injury, usecaution when lowering the wedgeonto the cylinder rod. Do notplace your fingers between thebottom of the wedge and thecylinder rod, this is a pinch point.Also the wedge is sharp, and cancut you if you are careless.

10. Install the four-way wedge onto the railassembly by slipping it over the squarepost. Install the wedge with the angledsteel plate facing up. Slowly slide thewedge down and onto the cylinder rod.The wedge is not held in place with anyfasteners.

Before cutting the steel band thatholds the lift trays together, tiethem securely with a rope. Oncethe bands are cut, the lift trays willfall. If not properly secured, the lifttrays could cause serious injury.

11. Use a rope to securely hold lift trays in place. Now cut the steel bands, then carefully untie the rope and lower the lift trays.

3. Release the latch assembly on the hitchand lock the hitch onto the ball.

4. Attach the towing safety chains to the towvehicle.

5. Place a customer supplied lock or lock pininto the latch assembly of the hitch.

Making sure the log splitter is securelyattached to the vehicle is the responsibili-ty of the owner/operator. Failure tosecurely attach the log splitter could resultin loss of control of the vehicle or the logsplitter becoming separated from the tow-ing vehicle, resulting is serious personal injury or even death.

WARNING

Towing

Maximum Speed Limit — 35 mphYour log splitter is built on a solid, unsuspended axle. To prevent damage orpossible loss of vehicle control, use extreme caution when towing and do notexceed a vehicle speed of 35 mph, especially when driving on a bumpy road.

1. Position the hitch on log splitter over oronto the tow vehicle’s tow ball. In somecases the hitch may not totally engagewith the ball without raising or lowering thejack assembly. Pull the latch assembly onthe hitch up and into the open position.

2. Raise or lower the jack until the ball iscompletely inside the hitch assembly.Raise both the log lift and log catch into afully raised position.

Note: When towing the log splitter, use arope or bungee cord to securely hold thelog lift and log catch in an upright position.

Do not attempt to operate the log splitter without fully understandingall our instructions, safety precautions, and/or warnings. If any doubtor question arises about the correct or safe method of performing any-thing found in this or other Iron & Oak Products’ manuals, contact your

Valve Control Levers

WARNINGStart-up Procedure

Important NoticeDo not start the engine. Follow all the instructions in the “Start-up Procedure”before operating the log splitter. Failure to follow this recommendation canresult in engine and hydraulic pump damage.

If this log splitter is purchased without an engine, the customer assumes all liabilities thatmight arise from an engine that is incompatible with the design of the log splitter. Alsoany unauthorized changes or modifications to the log splitter will void all warranties.

IMPORTANT: Before starting the engine, read the engine manufacturer’s operating andmaintenance instruction manual. If an engine manual was not supplied with the log split-ter, it is your responsibility to obtain a manual. Start by contacting the store where youpurchased the log splitter. If they cannot help you, contact the engine manufacturer.

1. Make sure the hydraulic tank is filled with SAE 10W tractor hydraulic oil or automatictransmission fluid such as Dextron III. The tank is full when all the cylinders are com-pletely retracted and the oil level is one inch from the top of the tank.

2. Make sure the engine’s crank case is full of the recommended oil.

3. Lubricate the surface of slide rail with grease. This will help to prevent wear betweenthe slide plates and the slide rail.

Important NoticeIf your log splitter is equipped with a factory installed engine, do not mix oilwith the gasoline. Using mixed oil/gasoline in a four cycle engine can causeengine damage.

Be careful not to spill fuel when filling the fuel tank. If fuel should spill,quickly wipe it off and allow the excess fuel to evaporate before contin-uing. Fuel and fuel vapors are highly flammable and can cause person-al injury or even death when ignited.

4. Fill the engine’s fuel tank with fresh, clean, lead-free automotive gasoline.

5. Start the engine per the manufacturer’s instructions.

6. With the engine running, cycle the log splitter several times.

7. Your log splitter is now ready to use.

3. Start the engine using the instructions fromthe engine manual. Warm up the engineand hydraulic system by running theengine at half throttle for 3 to 4 minutes,then advance the engine throttle control tomaximum speed.

Before loading and operating the log split-ter, always wear protective gear such assafety goggles, face shield, hearing pro-tection, tight-fitting gloves without drawstrings or loose cuffs, and steel-toedshoes.

4. Fully raise the log catch using lever (4).

5. Roll or place a log onto the log lift.

WARNING

Operating the Log Splitter1. Set your log splitter on flat, dry ground.

Make sure you read all the recommenda-tions from the “Safety” section beforeusing the log splitter.

When operating the log splitter make sure youare standing in the safe operating zone asshown in these pictures. You must stay in thesafe operating zone at all times when thepusher plate is in motion (whether extendingor retracting).

Never place any part of your body into aposition which would cause an unsafeoperating condition.

2. Make sure both ends of the log you aresplitting are cut as square as possible.This will prevent the log from sliding out ofposition while under pressure. All logsshould be 24 inches long or shorter.

9. Position the four-way wedge to the desiredlog thickness using control lever (3).

10. When the log is in position, push bothcontrol levers (1 and 2) forward. Thisstarts an automatic log splitting cycle thatextends the cylinder to the end of thestroke and then fully retracts it—ready foranother log.

You can also manually extend and retractthe cylinders using one lever at a time.

11. Do not remove any of the split logsfrom the cutting area until the pusherplate has fully retracted.

6. Raise the log lift using lever (5), slightlypast horizontal.

7. Allow the log to slowly and gently roll upagainst the rail assembly. Use your handto guide the log, but be extremely cau-tious and do not place your hand or fin-gers in any pinch points.

8. Fully raise the log lift using lever (5) andcenter the log on the rail assembly.

If you find you must hold or guidethe log, 1) until it is on the rail or2) the pusher plate touches it and

holds it in place, be very careful not to putyour hand between t he log and the push-er plate. Remove your hand immediately when the pusher plate touches the log.

Inspection and MaintenanceGeneral Maintenance Check (before operating)The hydraulic system (hoses, cylinders, and pump) should be carefully inspected beforeeach use. Also inspect the mechanical parts at the same time. Make sure all hoses,clamps, nuts, bolts, fittings, etc. are properly installed and tightened.

Do not check for leaks with your hand. Leaks can be located by pass-ing a piece of cardboard or wood around the suspected leak and look-ing for discoloration. High-pressure fluid escaping from a very smallhole can be almost invisible. Escaping fluid under pressure can havesufficient force to penetrate skin, causing serious injury or even death.If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doc-tor familiar with this type of injury.

Always replace frayed, kinked, or cracked hoses and/or other damaged hydraulic com-ponents with Iron & Oak Commercial Products authorized parts and components speci-fied in the “Parts Section” of this manual. Replacement parts from secondary suppliers(not original Iron & Oak replacement parts) can lead to product damage and/or personalinjury, and will void the warranty.

Do not remove the cap from the hydraulic tank or reservoir while the logsplitter is running. Hot oil under pressure could be expelled resulting inserious injury.

Should it become necessary to loosen or remove any hydraulic fitting or line, be sure torelieve all hydraulic pressure by shutting off the engine, removing spark plug wire, andmoving the valve control handle back and forth several times until no cylinder movementis visible.

Engine ServiceRefer to the engine manufacturers’ manual for engine maintenance and repair.

StorageRefer to the engine manufacturers’ manual for engine storage. No special proceduresare required for the hydraulic system to store the log splitter.

CAUTION

WARNING

Splitting Large Diameter Logs

When the log is very large in diameter, onlyraise the wedge 4 to 5 inches. This will allowtwo finished pieces of wood to be split off thebottom of the block and two large pieces toremain on top.

Lower the log lift to a horizontal positionwhere it can be used as a work table. Care-fully move the two large pieces to the logcatch tray and log lift tray. Now split one of thelarge pieces into four more pieces. Do thesame with the second large piece. This procedure can save the time of loading and reloading large pieces from the original log.

Continue splitting the large pieces into small-er pieces, until the log is completely split.

Hydraulic Oil ChangeIron & Oak Commercial Products recommends an oil and filter change every 100 hoursof operation. Refer to the “Specifications” section in this manual for the type and quan-tity of oil.

Important NoticeNever run the log splitter unless the hydraulic oil tank is full (cylinders retract-ed, 1 inch from the top of the tank).

1. To make sure the greatest quantity of oil is in the hydraulic tank:a. Retract the main splitting cylinder. b. Lower both the log lift and log catch cylinders. c. Lower the four-way splitting wedge cylinder.

2. Drain the hydraulic tank.

a. Place a waste oil container under theinlet hose.

b. Remove inlet hose from the pump.

c. Slightly raise the front of the log split-ter to completely drain the tank.

3. Change the filter using the Iron & Oakrecommended replacement.

4. Refill the hydraulic tank.

a. Reconnect the inlet hose to the pump.

b. Remove the hydraulic tank fill cap andfill the tank with the recommendedtype and quantity of oil. Replace thecap.

c. Start the engine and cycle all thecylinders several times.

d. Retract the main splitting cylinder,lower both log lift and log catch cylinders, and lower the four-way splitting wedge cylinder.

e. Recheck the hydraulic tank to make sure oil is filled within one inch from the top of the tank.

NotesTroubleshootingThe following section will detail procedures for checking your log splitter, should youencounter a malfunction. Iron & Oak Commercial Products, Inc. recommends that youdo not attempt to make repairs to the log splitter. In the long run, it is better to take yourlog splitter to a servicing lawn and garden dealer for repairs.

Problem: When the control handle is pushed forward (extend), the wedge does notmove.

1. Check the hydraulic tank to make sure the oil level is one inch from the top of the tank.

2. Remove the pump from the engine flange. Check the coupler, making sure the drivekeys are in place and there is no damage to the blue urethane spider.

3. Disconnect the pusher plate from the cylinder. Grasp the hydraulic cylinder shaft andtry to pull it out. If the rod comes out easily, you will need to rebuild or replace thecylinder.

4. If you have determined that the engine-to-pump coupler is intact and the cylinder is ingood condition, replace the pump.

Problem: The engine stalls when the wedge engages the wood.

1. The engine may not be properly adjusted. Take the engine to a service center forrepair and/or adjustment.

2. If all engine settings are correct, replace the pump.

Problem: The pusher plate moves slowly, but will split wood.

1. Replace the hydraulic system oil filter.

2. Check the oil filter housing for dirt and debris that may have obstructed the openings.

3. If the ram speed is still slow, replace the pump.

Problem: The ram will not automatically retract.

1. Check the slide rail or wedge assembly for damage.

2. Push the valve handle to the retract position. If the handle will not stay in this posi-tion, replace the valve assembly.
