WINTER 2015 “Our mission is to protect the citizens of Oklahoma by regulating the professions...& promoting quality practice”

Mission Accomplished: Board Es-

tablishes Permanent Endowed

Scholarships

As the cost of getting a college education soars beyond

the abilities of the young people to pay them back, it

puts increasing pressures on this generation to come

up with creative ways to pay for education. And, as we

all know, education is the key that moves our state

forward and brings prosperity. Our research showed

most of the scholarship monies are going to the first

year students. Traditionally, this is a time when some

are leaving home for the first time and they are not

always disciplined with their time, as well as the ina-

bility to determine what they want to study long term.

The criteria for this program has been set to help those

third, fourth and fifth year students who have entered

the professional phase of their education and settled

on these professions. We found about ninety-two per-

cent of this education stage does not have any finan-

cial help available for them and here, the cost contin-

ues to increase. Intending to fill part of that gap, the

Board established a permanent scholarship endow-

ment fund at the Oklahoma City Community Founda-

tion, a public charity that has been around since 1969.

The Path to Licensure scholarship is a competitive

award that is available to any student currently en-

rolled in an accredited program of architecture, land-

scape architecture or interior design in the State of

Oklahoma. The program has also been set up to allow

all persons interested in helping these professions do-

nate to this endowment for its growth.

It is our intent, with good stewardship, to look back on

this specific piece of legislation in twenty years and

see the remarkable impact it has had on not only the

lives of these young people and their families, but the

benefits for the people of the State of Oklahoma.

cess, see page 3.

Clarifications...

NO EXCEPION – LICENSE REQUIRED

FOR PROJECT ARCHITECT

Oklahoma follows the national standard requiring

project architect to be licensed in the state where

the project is being built.

EMERITUS MEANS REALLY RETIRED

There seems to be some confusion regarding this

status as it pertains to your Oklahoma license. If

you qualify, you are certifying to the fact that you

are truly no longer practicing. If you intend to pick

up "a little work" "here or there" it would be in your

best interest to maintain your license to allow you

the freedom to do so.

STATE LICENSING BOARD IS

WHERE YOU SHOULD BEGIN AND END Many of you belong to different organizations that support your practice and your respec-

tive professions. Each profession has their professional association (AIA, ASLA, AS-

ID...etc.). Each profession has a national organization; comprised of the state boards.

(NCARB, CLARB, CIDQ...etc.). These “collateral” organizations play vital rolls and offer

valuable services, but for you, membership is voluntary and based on personal preferences

and/or needs. Your state license is NOT optional but mandatory.

It is imperative to keep in mind that the state licensing board is the one governing your

professional practice. The Board is responsible for the enforcement and disciplinary mat-

ters of all their licensees. If you have ANY questions regarding practice in the State of

Oklahoma, call the board office @ 405-949-2383.

Regarding Your Practice…..

Notification of Changes in Firm Practice Required (OK Rules 55:10-13-12)

Entities are required to notify the Board office within thirty (30) days

of any or all changes that affect the Certificate of Authority (CA) or

Certificate of Title (CT). CA/CT Revision forms can be found on the

board's website and must be signed by an Architect or Landscape Ar-

chitect of Record, Registered Interior Designer of Record, or another

partner, director, officer, shareholder, principal or for a limited liabil-

ity company, a manager or member of the Entity, notarized and ac-

companied by the fees. Failure to properly and promptly notify the

Board of these changes shall be cause for disciplinary action.

IDP Changes

Let's Clear Things Up

NCARB has streamlined the Intern Development Program

(IDP) by no longer requiring elective hours. To date 21 states continue to require 5,600+ hours and/or have a minimum

employment duration requirement, as each state/jurisdiction sets its own requirements for initial licensure.

Oklahoma requires the completion of 5600 hours, which in-cludes IDP.

3,740 hours to satisfy IDP's new standard. The remaining 1820 hours are to be earned within IDP's current experience

areas.

Currently IDP has 17 experience areas. On June 29, 2016

these will be realigned into six broad practice-based areas.

For more detailed information please call the board office

and/or visit http://www.ncarb.org/Experience-Through-

Internships.aspx

CONTINUING EDUCATION REMINDERS

The Continuing Education Audit Committee requested that we share the following as a result of their findings:

Continuing education opportunities are readily availa-ble. For Architects, these courses do not have to be AIA approved for your State of Oklahoma license, but as for each profession, they do have to meet the criteria out-lined in Oklahoma Rules 55:10-17-7 - General course/program requirements: 24 hours, all of which must be HSW.

It is important to document and maintain your records when taking courses. You will need them should you be selected for audit.

For those of you who belong to organizations that pro-vide a transcript (ie...AIA, ASLA) you have the ease of using your the transcript as a reporting tool & verifica-tion; however it is not always accurate. Some courses are designated as non-HSW when in fact are HSW and vice versa. Once again, keeping copies of your certifi-cates/verification will help you should any questions
