A word from Fr. John, As I write this, we are in the midst of another terrific week of Vacation Bible School here at St. John’s. It is always interesting to watch the children who are new to our VBS program. As they walk into the school building, they are met with an array of great decorations that has transformed our school building to match the VBS theme. This year’s VBS was Maker Fun Factory, focusing on how God built us for a purpose. Thus, the amazing decorations included robots, fanciful machines, oversized tools, large gears, building blocks and Legos, among others. It’s great to watch the children and adults respond as they take it all in. Invariably on the first day, some of our new children find it difficult to see their caregivers walk away. There can be tears and the need for reassuring words and actions offered by the teen and adult staff. One grandmother shared with me having dropped off her granddaughter that she had been instructed to return in an hour to retrieve her granddaughter, who was uncertain about wanting to stay. Of course, by the end of the day, the granddaughter was volunteering to come up in front of the large group to help assemble a drum out of large plastic piping, and to lead the group through various hand motions that accompanied the singing. The next day, the grandmother informed me that her granddaughter was dropped off early at her home. And as soon as she arrived, she was asking when they were going to be leaving for VBS, because she did not want to be late. Another mother of two young children, who were attending VBS for the first time, told me that her older child asked if this year’s VBS was the first one. When she told her son that the VBS program had been offered for a number of years. He asked rather indignantly why he had not been allowed to come in prior years. When I saw her and her children a few days later, I asked her daughter if she had fun at VBS that day, and whether she planned on coming back the next day. The daughter smiled and answered, “Yes!” Her mother added that her daughter planned on coming on Saturday as well. Never mind that VBS runs only through Friday. The joy and enthusiasm of these young participants is a testament to the quality of the program put on year after year by our youth and adult volunteers under the guidance and inspiration of Justin Jackson. Our parish and community is blessed repeatedly by the time, talent and treasure generously offered in support of our VBS program. Thank you very much for your efforts and support! May God’s grace allow the faith, which was shared and fostered among those who participated in VBS, to bear fruit in our families, parish and larger community. Yours, Fr. John

NEWS FROM FR. DAN...
Shortly after I returned from Southern California this past Spring, a new and exciting opportunity for priestly ministry came my way. My mind and body, as well as my spirit, had been telling me it was time for a change in my life, as I'm not getting any younger! So, in mid September, I'll be moving to live as part of St. Ann's Community on Portland Avenue. I'll be living in an independent apartment in Chapel Oaks, a complex of about 150 such apartments for seniors, on the St. Ann campus. With two other retired priests already living there, I'll be sharing in priestly ministry for all the residents, with Mass and sacraments, and visitation of the sick. We do ministry under the direction of Sr. Mary Lou Mitchell, SSJ, the Director of Pastoral Care. Along with Chapel Oaks, St Ann's includes a large nursing home, a transitional care unit, a hospice unit, and a wound healing unit. St. Ann's also has similar facilities in Webster at Cherry Ridge. I'm very grateful to Fr. John for the 5+ years we've shared rectory living, a time of sharing meals and conversation, with much laughter. A most happy time in my priestly life. And I'm very grateful to Fr. Gonyo, who first invited me to St. John's some 8+ years ago. The time has moved so quickly. Working with these two priests has made my 'retirement' better than any priest could ever dream. And finally, I'm grateful to you - parishioners - who welcomed me in the beginning and shared your lives of faith and worship over these years. You are in my prayers of thanks to God. I will continue assisting at weekend Masses here for the next few months, as my new schedule at St. Ann's will allow. God's blessings to all of you, and thanks. Fr. Dan

Vacation Bible School 2017
This past week, a record-breaking 102 children and 67 volunteers joined us for an incredible week of Maker Fun Factory Vacation Bible School! Together we learned that no matter what we look like or what flaws we may have, God made us for a reason and loves us just the way we are. Children built Noodle Bots that actually moved, crafted marshmallow snack forts, played wild and wet games, sang faith-based music, traveled to Jericho and became spies for Rahab, and experienced many wacky and creative inventions! We had many families enter our “Create-a-Robot” contest and brought in shiny, imaginative bots to share! A huge THANK YOU to all of our teen and adult volunteers, volunteers who sewed and crafted 500 mini plush animals, and to the incredible St. John’s parish that prayed for, donated to, and helped make VBS 2017 an enormous success. Tune in next summer and get ready to climb some coconut trees for VBS 2018…
