This is the public reprinting of the House of Commons Paper published two months earlier, together with the extremely rare “Extracts of Letters, &c from Governor Phillip, relating to New South Wales. Ordered to be printed 21st May 1792” (Ferguson 143). The latter is reprinted at Pp. 123-127 of the present work and deals particularly with agriculture and land cultivation. Even the lists of clothing and other articles requested and sent out are immensely interesting for the light they shed on the needs and problems of the colony. A foundation work of paramount importance, very seldom offered for sale. #21798 A$35,000.00

78 White, John: JOHN WHITES RESA TILL NYA HOLLAND, till Nya Holland, aren 1787 och 1788. I Sammandrag af Samuel Odmann. Upsala, tryckt hos dir. J. Edmans enka, 1793. Cr. 8vo, First Edition; pp. xii, 148; 4 plates, a few text decorations; uncut in contemporary wrappers (stuck a little far into first & last leaves obscuring portions of three letters; fore-edge of title-page slightly trimmed and neatly reinforced); a nice copy; very scarce. Upsala; J. Edmans; 1793. ***Ferguson 172; Du Rietz 915. This rare Swedish account was compiled by Samuel Odmann from Johann Reinhold Forster’s German version of the First Fleet story derived from the published English accounts of White and Phillip (the official account). The final part of the volume (page 115 to the end) is an account of Captain Cook’s voyage up the east coast of New Holland, probably derived from Hawkesworth. Odmann was quite a prolific compiler of material related to Australia and the Pacific producing several works in the late eighteenth century. The plates were probably the first images of Australia published in Sweden (see Rolf Du Rietz’s Swansea, Series A, Part I, pp. 21-23, for detailed discussion). #48729 A$650.00

A Paris, Chez Pougin, Imprimeur-Libraire, rue des Peres, No. 9. An 3 de la Republique, (1795, vieux style.) Post or demy 8vo, First French Edition; pp. xii, 206, [2](Table des Matieres), 256(Notes du Traducteur), [4](Table Alphabetique des Notes); contemporary paste-papered boards, rebacked & recornered with calf or kangaroo; (a little foxing at beginning & end; small stain on lower corner of first few leaves); a fine generally clean & crisp copy; rare. Paris; Pougin; 1795. ***Ferguson 231. Without the two plates called for by FERGUSON. We are disposed, however, to challenge his collation. During the past sixty years we have examined many copies of this edition, and not one has contained any plates. The British Museum copy, also, is without them. On the other hand, the “edition” of 1798 (F. 283), which is actually a re-issue of the sheets of the 1795 edition but with a new half-title and title-page, has two plates, which are specified in the title. However, FERGUSON in his description of this issue does not mention the two plates in his collation. We conclude, therefore, that he has confused the two issues, and that his collations require revision. The importance of this translation of WHITE’s Journal has consistently been overlooked. The latter part of the Volume (i.e., the 256 pages comprising the “Notes du Traducteur”), which exceeds in volume the work of WHITE itself, consists of detailed analysis, comment, criticism and elaboration of WHITE’s Journal, relating WHITE’s statements to those in the works of PHILLIP and TENCH, and comparing the country generally, the native people and their ways, the flora and fauna, with those of other lands, as recorded by earlier voyagers and observers, both English and French. POUGENS’ Notes with this translation, therefore, entitle it to be considered a separate work in its own right. #21522 A$1950.00
