Live in the 'ka19' Eastside? Check out scoping meetings for Eastside 1 Extension Phase 2

Rendering of Meaa Eastside Extension Phase 2 station.

Starting tonight, Metro will be holding community meetings to review four options for Phase 2 of the Eastside Extension:

Light rail via the 60 . Light rail on Washington Boulevard . Transportation systems management (impmving bus s e ~ c e s ) Auwbuild alternative.

The meetings will he held in the oommunities of Pico Rivera, South El Monte,Montebello and Whittier.

The meetings, which are part of the environmental review pmcm for the project, will enable the publie to learn more about the project and provide fdbaek on the proposed options and the evaluation pmcws used to identify and mitinate environmental impact.

Although most UCLAcommuters resid'mg east of downtown LA currently commute by car or vanpool because of the distance and travel time savings, my best guess is that the completiou of the Eastside Extension - in concert with the regional connector and the Westside Szibway - may very well make taking mass transit from that part of the County to UCLAfeasihle and practical on a daily basis.

The four commuuity meetings will be held on:

Monday, February 22

Pio Pico Women's Center

6 p.m. to 8 pm.

9214 Mines Avenue

Pico Rivera

Wednesday, February 24

Soulh ElMonte Senior Center (dining room)

Th~sday, February 25

Saturday, Febmary 27

The Salvation Army SontaFe Springs (Shtdio 12000), 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., 12000 East Washington Boulevard, Whittier

The format ofthe meetings will include an open house followed by a presentation to inform participants of the environmental process and provide an opportunity to ask questions about the study and submit comments.

Since 2007, Metro has conducted an Alternative Analysis (A& and has p repad supplemental trchnical shldies to identify feasible routes to extend the Meho Gold Line Eastside Extension to cities farther east of Los Angeles.

Every day, approximately 50,000 commuting trips leave the area bound for central Los Angeles and 115,000 daily work trips are made within the study area, itself. 'Ibese existing conditions, comhined with population growth of 24 percent and employment growth of 15 percent over the next 30 years, illustrate the need for additional transit alternatives.

Ifmembers of the public are unable to attend any of the scoping meetings they may still submit comments by mail, fax or e-mail. The comments must be received by April 14,2010.

It's a big day at Metro HQ in downtown, wlth Sen. Barbara Boxer and U.S. Secretaw ofTransoortatran Rav LaHood here for i town hail meeting 0" the next 1. federal transportation bill. That is set to start In a few minutes and I'll poxt about It this afternoon.

In the meantme, Sen. Boxer and

Secretary LaHood held a press conference across the street at Metro's dawntown bus maintenance facility. Both touted the nearly $1.1 b~l l~on from last year's federal stlmulus blll that went to transportatton prejects in Los Angeles County.

Where rs that money going? Here's a snort llst:

.$la9 mllllon far the northbound 405 freeway carpool project

.$84 milson to munl bus operators. -470 mllllan for Blue Une traction power substations. ~$320 million for road maintenance projects.

Federal offic~als say that these pmjects have created or saved 11,700 lobs in L.A. County.

During the questton period, I asked Secretary LaHood if he could comment on whether the Westslde Subway Extension and the Downtown Reglanal Connector would get federal

funding fmm the New Starts program. - . -

Attentive readers of The Source know that the Federal iranaft Adrninistrauon mccntly rejected a $77 millton request for monFy for prellmlnary englneenng on both projects because netther pmiect Is yet officially a New Starts Pmgmm.

LaHood's answer: "We w~l l continue to work with our fnends m Congress to make funding

avaliable for worthwhile prqects.'

1 followed up and asked if he thought the Subway and conneor were worthwhile projects. LaHood said that he would not evaluate the projects at a press conference.

More on the town hall later ....

Apparently, in an attempt to ftx the state budget, Governor Schwarzenegger Is hoping to

turn the Amber Alert boards on Califomla's freeways Into full color digital dlsplaw that funnel adrertirlng menages to drivers as they commute. There are currently 708 message boards, but the plan is taadd another 597. Officials say that selling the r~ghts to just SO0 of the screens could lead to $2 billion in revenue over the next 20 years. Dstracted dnv1ng7 We've onJy just scratched the surface it seems.

The Infrastructunst has a Bzol, tc visuallzlng the commute modes of vanous major U.S. dtdes. Houston has the greatest share o f people drlvtng cars to work, but L.A. ts in a close second. ConstderlnQ It's sprawling nature and awful traffic, I was surprised to see that Atlanta has a fairly significant segment of the population thst commutes vla publfc transit.

really eye opening stats that prove it. T a k thls for example: 5% of people die when struck by a motorist gotng 20 miles par hour versus 85% when a vehicle a gofng 40 miles per hour. A majority of riders would pay 50 cents more in fare, if their bus came every 5 minutes instead of every 10 minutes

In December, the consulting firm Fa-nYe, Maslh, Mauliin, p&&k+soelates was hired by Metm to conduct a survey of Metm riders to gauge customer opinlons on bus and rail servlce and prlclng scenarios as the agency struggles with its finances. Over the course of three days the firm conducted telephone surveys of 400 riders who were randomly selected from a pool of riders who had previously filled out on-board surveys.

Perhaps the most interesting frndlng was that riders seem to be willing to pay a h~gher

fare for faster and more frequent service. I n response to the questton, *would you pay 50 cents mre in fare, if your bus came every 5 minutes ins@ B f e w iQ mnms?* 65% of respondents said "Deflnltely yes" or 'Probably yes."
