Greek men and women wore a belted garment

of linen or wool. Most men's garments hung to the knees. A woman's garment fell to the ankles. In cold weather, Greeks draped a cloak over their shoulders and arms. Sandals were the main footwear.

The Greeks believed that certain gods and

goddesses watched over them and directed daily events. Families tried to please household gods with offerings and ceremonies. Each city-state honoured one or more gods as protectors of the community and held annual festivals in their honor.

The Greece's mild climate enabled the people

to carry on many activities outdoors, and so most houses were small and simple. And the Most poor families lived in one- or two-room houses built of sun-dried bricks with floors of hard-packed earth. Wealthy Greeks lived in larger, more comfortable houses built around a courtyard. The houses had separate rooms for cooking, eating, and sleeping. Stones or tiles covered the floors.

Was a major Greek goddess. She was the

Greek version of an Asian goddess of life similar to Astarte. Many artists and poets have restricted Aphrodite's role to goddess of love and beauty, but her functions in ancient Greece were varied and complex. The Greeks worshiped Aphrodite as a universal goddess called Urana (queen of heaven) and as a goddess of civic life called Pan demos (goddess of all people).
