Birth in Ancient Egypt


Birth in Ancient EgyptIn ancient Egypt when a son or daughter was born into a family it was a considered a great blessing to their parents because it was tradition that as the kids grew older they would take care of their parents in their old age. Once the parents knew the gender of the child they would start celebrating the birth by giving presents and gifts to the newly born child. Often girls would be given many necklaces and boys would be given lots of hats.

Childhood in Ancient EgyptIn ancient Egypt children were often involved in adult life much earlier then kids are now. During the children's early life they would spend most of their time with their mother and other female relatives in small areas of their home. As the children grew older and more mature they were given more and more responsibilities from the parents or guardians.


The children wore simple clothes all throughout their childhood life, they often wore leather, sandals and necklaces or bracelets. Boys would have their entire head shaved except for one spot which they would keep until they reached 12 year old. Although ancient Egyptians loved their children, many died at birth due to their parents trying to prevent them from accidents and illnesses by the means of strange charms and spells.

Birth in Ancient MesopotamiaIt was tradition in Ancient Mesopotamia that when a child was born their family would celebrate with a banquet. The banquet sometimes include music, food and dancing, however it all depended on what the family wanted. In a household their was often between 3 to 4 children, even though miscarriages were high. These children were raised by their woman relatives at home whilst their father worked. The children were raised based on the gender roles, this resulted in the boys being raised by learning things that they could someday use at work, while the girls were taught how to stay at home and be mothers and wife's.

Children in Ancient Mesopotamia always had to respect their parents and pretty much do any thing their parents told them to do during their childhood years. Parents in Ancient Mesopotamia hardly ever sold their children as it was highly frowned upon but if the family was it terrible financial trouble or were disgusted by their child's attitude they would occasionally result to the rash decision of selling their son or daughter into child labour.

Birth in Modern CanadaToday in canada children are born in hospitals and delivered by trained doctors apposed to in ancient times when children were born in homes and delivered by anyone who was around. In Canada it is also custom that we name our child before the birth and the parents are often given many presents by their close friends to celebrate the newest edition to their family.

Childhood in Modern CanadaIn Canada children are raised by both or just one of their parents depending on which parent works to bring in money for the family. Both boy and girl children go to school as early at the age of five. They carry on their education for many years before working in the field of their choice. Children now in Canada often have much more money growing up, this results in them having better quality food, water, clothing and shelter.

Birth in Ancient GreeceIn Ancient Greece newly born babies often had a hard time surviving. Tons died within just a few days, this resulted in Greeks not naming their children until the child had lived at least seven days. Disabled babies were often abandoned in mountains or valley, especially if the baby was a female. Occasionally these abandoned babies would be rescued but often the child would have to fend for themselves.

One example of this is that is some greek cities, children were wrapped in blankets or towels until they were 2 years old to make sure they had straight limbs, however other greek cities like Sparta didn’t do this at all!

Childhood in Ancient GreeceYoung Children spent most of their time with their mother and lived in the woman's part of the house. As the children grew up, girls would be given their entire educated in their home with their mother, whilst boys would either learn their fathers occupation or go to school as early as at the age of 7 years old. However in Sparta it was completely different. When a boy turned 7 years old they would be sent to the barracks by the city where they were raised. These boys trained in the military before being allowed to leave the barracks at the age of 30.
